Anyone know WRX's?

Whatya think of this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=410298638 ?

K's are highish, but it looks to have been well looked after, am tempted pending an AA/VTNZ check..

Big end bearing failure is common and the gearboxes aren't that great. As above 02 sensors fail, (esp if you are using an unsecured pod filter).

The STI is crazy fast, but along with the above ther is the fact you can't ever leave it anywhere and insurance could be an issue. Fuel millage is poor if you boost.

I would only buy another one if it's was newer/very low km.

But they are very quick cars that are fun to drive.

Try and get a mechanical warranty perhaps ?

Easily moddable and can get some decent power for not too much coin

Talking to a subaru guru last night, he thinks its probably a good buy. I was looking at some low k's (100k) 98-99 WRX hatch/wagon's, and he'd put money on a well maintained Sti being more reliable than an unknown lower k's wrx. Aparently the drivetrains in the Sti's are much more bulletproof than the WRX's.

Aparently if you miss an oil change or spread one out, youve got a good chance of destroying it next time you change the oil. They like to sludge oil, and if you clear the sludge out with fresh oil you get bad stuff happening.

Not keen on the newer versions, fugly (not that any wrx is pretty!), and they got much heavier.

Insurance is barely anymore than the bimmer! Crazy. Over 25 and a clean driving history.

Ill wait to see what the VTNZ/AA say ;)

ahhh boxer engine... damn they prone to oil leaks like my legacy gtb, turbo probs and oxy sensor. BUT can get decent milage if driven sensibly.

Mate had the coupe version of these. On the coupe STI add water spray and variable ratio center diff so you can change the drive to give more bias to rear or front. Dispite regular thrasings his sti held together well. However , talking to the lads at the rally school a number of years back were saying that the EVOs were a bit stronger when used for competetion with gearboxs being the weak link in the wrx.(EVO4 era)

Having said that plenty of performance shops know how to get the best out of these with stroker kits / stronger gearsets.

Drive one first as the sti have lower gearing which makes for higher rpm at 100kmh. Great for having turbo in boost range but can get tiresome on journeys and fuel economy can suffer.

get on rexnet.

V5 & V6 versions have the better heads & injectors. (still sort after for later versions)

For real driving you need the centre diff controller....very expensive to retro fit so get a version with one if possible.

Without they have awful understeer which requires expensive suspension mods to control

Gearsets for older versions are getting hard to come by now. later model 6speed is stronger than the earlier 5 spd but also alot heavier. 6spd is a option to upgrade for earlier models.

Pretty easy to work on despite the lack of room down low.

I do have a soft spot for Subbies, STI's are neat and very fast standard. Not the strogest motor but also not unreliable either, just like BMWs especially, servicing is a biggy that shouldn't be missed other wise you DO get problems. The one listed is quite nice, didn't realise they were light wieght?

Light weight is referring to alloy bonnet and guards, another biggie we sell are airflow meters. Like a BMW get a check done by a specialist.

STi's sh*t all over a standard wrx in every facet. Much like ///M is to BMW. just like BMW, they love regular servicing. every 10k would be acceptable, better if you do a quick oil change at the 5k mark inbetween.

most reliable cars i have ever owned have been subarus. rocker cover seals and front+rear main seals last about 100k. when these go, they like to drip oil on the exhaust manifold.

at 150k it would benefit from some love in the bush dept, and the shocks would respond well to a regreasing if they havent been done already (L/R often has a mild knock which usually indicates time to regrease)

Fun cars to own.

Aparently its normal for them to smoke initially after a few days sitting, oil seep into the bores made worse by the forged internals. Any idea if this is true?

Its got service history from http://www.mapc.co.nz/ since it was imported, 5k oil changes and all the other work.

Hopefully the it passes the check's without anything major showing up, am keen to drive it after reading about em!. 0-100 in 5seconds sounds fun ;)

It looks to be a pretty good car, i've had 2 STI's and an RA. Don't be afraid of the reputation that Subbies have for breaking down, as long as they have had a very good service history and you continue too take care of it, you shouldn't have any problems but if work is needed it can cost big $$ and something as simple as a cambelt and waterpump replacement, can take several hours to do (and a pain in the ass) and don't even get started with a HG replacement :rolleyes:

The blue Sti one is out of the question for the moment, dont ask, terrible luck. Pity as looked like the only original one with a decent service history.

After a stock standard hasnt been f**ked with wagon, which counts the trick centre diff out as it was only on the TypeR coupes.

Have booked a normal 98 wrx wagon in to be inspected. If it comes back clean ill probably get it, it looks like new and has silly low k's on it and is again totally standard.

Pity so many muppets drive/steal WRX's, wreck them for everyone else :D

I am learning this the hard way. The reason for the $1500 theft excess (with dual immobilisers) has been proven!

Nah. can be done engine in car. Not alot harder than changing the plugs. Some people do like to unbolt the mounts and jack the motor, but its not necessary.

Cambelts are easy as f**k. Everything is right there at the front of the engine so no drama. Pays to do waterpump etc at the same time, complete kit (belts, idlers, tensioners, waterpump etc)is in the region of $800 from memory.

Bought a tidy white 98 wagon with 116k on the clock, not an Sti sadly, but getting a stock un fuct with one was higher on the list for me than going fast (I hate the noise subaru's make with big cannon exhausts too!). its cranking 160psi on the front two, 158psi on the back, and looks damn near new. Have receipts for cambelt/waterpump/idlers/rocker cover gaskets/plugs and a service came to $1200 for the lot, not too bad.

Hopefully it last long enough to build the E30 wagon ;)

Just picked it up from the car distributor company, trucked from nelson to auckland.

Its got THE worst cheapest respray done to the front/right. Looks like total sh*t. Over spray everywhere, its a total different shade of white to the rest of the car.

Rear bumper is held on with cable ties, and the sideskirt just f**ken fell off!

Called the dealer. he told me to f**k off (in more words...)

Called the indepedant inspector I paid, he told me the lighting wasnt great

Read the consumer gaurantees act.

Called the dealer, he told me he's not admiting anything, but to go get a qoute to fix it.

Went and got two qoutes.

$1600 to respray front and RH side of car (one of the painters actually cracked up at the paint on it!)

Called dealer. told "no way"

Asked for refund "no"

Hung up.

Called motor vehicle disputes tribunal.

f**k!

That is all.

I wouldnt have touched this thing with a barge pole had I seen it personally before handing over $9500 cash.

My other car is now sold and picked up (this morning), and this goatf**k is going to court.

Am I still able to drive the vehicle?? Is it wise, not wise? Need to get to work in an hour...
