leithcm 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2012 Having made the change, am looking to get the engine ECU reprogrammed to the specs of a manual. This needs to be the whole ECU - including the engine data Eprom. Does anyone know who can do this in Christchurch? I have got in touch with the local dealer (Jeff Gray BMW) but haven't heard back. Is there any BMW specialist workshop, or perhaps any one else, around that will do this type of work? Thanks.

Guest Simon* Report post Posted February 21, 2012 In case the dealer is going to charge you a fortune, you might want to ask DCH Motorsport if they can do it and how much for too http://www.dchmotorsport.co.nz/

*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 Another option is to get a second hand DME from a manual and realign with EWS if it has EWS. If no EWS it's all straight forward
Wom 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 I didn't think it was necessary to do this on the e36 can't say I've noticed any issues leaving mine with the original programming (almost 18 months now since conversion)
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 Might be cheaper to get a manual ecu?
polley 916 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 I didn't think it was necessary to do this on the e36 can't say I've noticed any issues leaving mine with the original programming (almost 18 months now since conversion) It's not necessary, but there are some quirks if you don't. Higher idle. Revs sometimes shoot up a lil bit when changing gear.
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 Mine has been recoded. The idle is fine, but a tad slow at times coming back to idle. It maybe the light flywheel. I'm still trying to get my hands on a Siemens DME for a manual 328i to try, but it's not that much of a concern to really worry about.
m325i 709 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 I'm not sure if mine has been reflashed? (I think it has), but i sometimes get a little bit of revs hanging in between gears - only on partial throtle. Taking your foot off slightly earlier when changing gears is a 'fix'
hybrid 1043 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 Your DME still thinks its auto. There are two things here. Coding the DME to tell it to ignore automatic gearbox states Flashing the DME to be a manual DME (includes automatic gearbox idle/load adjustment removal)
leithcm 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2012 The idle is fine, but a tad slow at times coming back to idle. It maybe the light flywheel. The light flywheel will slow down much quicker than a heavy one when going off throttle. A lightened flywheel has much less rotating mass and inertia to resist the decelerating effect of closing the throttle. It is this reason that an engine with a lightened flywheel does not "hang on" as well, say, when chugging up a hill. Heavy flywheels with a high rotating mass take a long time to speed up - and also slow down.
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted February 23, 2012 (edited) ^^^ My theory as well..however some people in the "know" say it's possibly the flywheel. Thats why I want to try a Manual 328i Siemens DME for a M52B28 if anyone has got one Edited February 23, 2012 by *Glenn*

leithcm 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2012 Well, time to report on the latest. Took the car into Jeff Gray BMW today. Had rung them about 10 days ago and after a day or two to think about it they got in touch to say "Yes, we can do it, bring it in." Long story short, No they could not. For those who thought this will cost an arm and a leg, the bill for their time was less than $70. Probably 30 minutes, charged 6 time units.......... Not a hell of a long time trying everything, I would have thought, but then again I wasn't there. They told me they tried everything they knew, even got in touch with Auckland; but nothing worked. Some story about my particular car and the time of manufacture etc etc - but at the end of the day, they did nothing. Where to now? How did you get on, Glenn, with your experiment?
