There are so many good ones, it's hard to single one out but The Blues Brothers is probably my number one. Ronin was pretty good, the Bourne movies & Quantum of Solace were also worth a look.

+1 for Ronin. All the chases are spectacular but the introduction to the S8 when it escapes the cops in Paris is the best. The recent movie The Intouchables has a good one with a Maserati Quattroporte against the cops on the same roads.

best car chase from start to finish would have to be "Goodby pork pie" imo :)

I love the Ronin car chases the most (accept for the Mercedes 450 6.9 bit with the fake CGI smoke)

The car sounds were spot on and music was kept to a minimum.

says it all....

While he was aware of the many innovations in digital special effects since then, he elected to film all these sequences live, to obtain the maximum level of authenticity. To further this, many of the high-speed shots have the actual actors in the cars. Skipp Sudduth did nearly all of his own driving, while other cars were right hand drive models with stunt drivers driving - crashes were handled by a stuntman. To lend additional authenticity, the sound recordist re-recorded many of the vehicles in the chases to ensure that during the editing, the right sounds were dubbed in for each vehicle

Nothing beats the Blues Brothers chase scene for the carnage factor ... real shopping malls ruined etc. It was about as epic as it could get.

I don't think it will ever be beaten because of all of the CGI that goes into movies these days (im looking at you Fast and Furious 6) you just wont get it happening again.

Goes off to watch Blues Brothers .. Sick days rule.

Yeah, nothing can replace live action stunts in films, it's just never the same with CGI.

i recently saw FF6 at the cinema. The theater cracked up laughing with some of the 'action'

While technically not a car chase (I think it was a Mack truck) Mel Gibson driving the decoy in Mad Max 2 was spectacular.

A few other scenes live in my memory:

The cobra leaving the helicopter for dust in Gumball rally

Again trucks on a very dusty road in Convoy

Oh and (sorry look away - very sh!t movie reference coming up):

Fast Furious 2 - the mitsu's vs the old muscle (mostly I just love watching that orange Dodge rock from side to side while stationary under throttle)

Best chase scene involving a BMW - I don't recall too many not in a James Bond film... Perhaps the 3 e39's chasing Brad and Ange in Mr and Mrs Smith.

The South Auckland police do a good job, helping cleanse the gene pool one chase at a time.

Good ones not mentioned already :

Shaker Run

Gone in 60 Seconds (The Original one, not the remake).

And an "Obligatory BMW reference" - The BMW Films that were made around 2001..

A couple of the Getaway in Stockholm movies for that original real feel. The original one with the Porsche is quite cool. All on board camera's.
