These cars NEED oil changes at the very most every 25,000kms (Tom?) but I see 7.5k intervals on the US forums a lot, assuming this is miles. At that mileage it should've had Insp. 1 + 2. I'd assume that a valve clearance check would be needed by that mileage too. Obviously if you take it further the subframe and everything need checking. If I did it over I'd be inclined to take the car to Ray @ HellBM as obviously he knows the E46 M3s inside-out. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

You said it's an 80 ms gear change in the SMG II. The manual says if you tap twice within that 80 ms then it will cancel the first tap and execute the second one. * Human reaction time is 200 to 300 ms * A blink is between 300 and 400 ms * If you're tapping your finger on a desk the actual contact time with the desk is 100 to 300 ms per tap. Humans don't do things in 80 ms. The gear change has completed well before you've had a chance to tell it to skip a gear if my interpretation is correct. In fact it's completed before you can even lift your finger to start the second tap. Two taps will take a (super)human >300 ms under the most perfect conditions, the norm would be closer to >600 ms. Since a human couldn't possibly hope to tap twice within 80 ms then I call bull on the claim that it's practical, even if technically possible. 6 taps in 432 milliseconds or 65 - 75 milliseconds per gear change for a 40 y/o cough plus human on SMG paddles. Remember , with SMG you don't need to deal with that antiquated knob on the end of that level to your left that requires movement of your whole arm. Just paddles that only need to move 4-6 mm per selection. try your reaction time here a double click is down two gears. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

hybrid 1039 Report post Posted July 17, 2013 haha nah. The leaver I have in the car is a very close ratio mechanical shifter that does away with the floppy soft OEM setup. Its setup that way for the track when you shift you dont have to move your hand off the steering wheel or think about fumbling around for it. I'm not a fan of small chopped street shifters. Going SMGII would make it so you just dont have to think about it around corners, You also don't spend your time messing around with unloading the car with a clutch pedal and it just makes you faster. On a road car I can understand the 90s obsession for the oldskool honda or MR2 style chode, I guess, but theyre not very direct and quite sloppy shifting. Once in a rhythm 'normal' people can click a (wired) mouse 7-10 times a second when they're really trying hard, you can apparently do 13 or 14 which is pretty impressive (and fast enough to complete for a world record I believe - http://sky1.sky.com/speed-clicking). A mouse button normally travels less than 1 mm... adding 3 to 5 mm to that in each direction would at least double the time. I maintain a quick double tap on a table is more representative than a mouse click in terms of total travel. So your numbers are looking like ~130ms at best which, whilst still astonishingly quick, is a long way away from sub 80ms. Are the paddle actuators spring loaded? Spring decompression time will be ~20 to ~40ms at best... add that on too... I think it's about as relevant as saying that "anyone can lap the Nurburgring in 8:22 because they own an e46 M3", possible sure but entirely unachievable by most. But I have to concede, because I can't prove otherwise, that you may indeed be fast enough - for all I know you may be able to stab a fruit fly in the heart with a broken chopstick in a gale force! And long may you enjoy your double-tap supremacy! Just don't lead other people to believe that they can expect to have the same results as you. Lots space invaders as a kid plus some martial arts training which may have a bearing on hand reaction time. Never tried the karate kid thing But you are right , end of the day I'm only an average driver and would need to learn a lot before doing a 8:22 in a car. APT , how's the search going ?
