Palazzo 477 Report post Posted January 30, 2014 R32s are still $20-35K for the most part though, is that "affordable"? I wouldn't say so… but nice to hear opinions nonetheless. I standby the Alfa 159 3.2 - When I drove one it was a blast. 3 pedals combined with a nice exhaust.. mmmm Start at $16.5 asking on TM for a Mk1 (Mk4 Golf) and $20k for a Mk 2 (Mk5 Golf) and I'm positive you can get those down. A low mileage Mk1 NZ new car sold last year for mid-high teens. An S55 Kompressor will start at $25ish if you shop around, non kompressor, high teens. I drove one of these when it was 2 years old, still one of the nicest sounding cars I've driven, although I'd be curious to see how time had changed my opinion. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/alfa-romeo/auction-688535342.htm Also looked at an Alfa Sprint 1.7 at the same time, was 18 months old and already had rust in the hatch. Tristan 338 Report post Posted January 31, 2014 Are you talking about affordability in the sense of the initial purchase? If so, sure an Alfa is an affordable car :-P Well, initial outlay is the largest (hopefully ) financial commitment at once. After purchase, you'd hope that servicing wouldn't be more than $1K at a time. Start at $16.5 asking on TM for a Mk1 (Mk4 Golf) and $20k for a Mk 2 (Mk5 Golf) and I'm positive you can get those down. Don't know about you or anyone else but I wouldn't be buying an R32 at 150,000+kms Hence my comment on getting them cheaper. As I pointed out, one with low kms (around 80 from memory) sold for same or less. It's a fairly simple car, large motor, manual (in the earlier ones), not much else. I'd have a manual Mk2 with over 100kms for the wife, just for the exhaust note if they were priced right. People are happy to but an M5/M3 or whatever with 150kms plus, so why not this? Tristan 338 Report post Posted January 31, 2014 So why not this? Just my opinion. 3 mates with Golfs and all have gone south at 100,000kms+- costing a fortune in parts and labour. Whether they were just unlucky I don't know. The low-mileage, NZ new selling high-teens must've been a good buy.
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted January 31, 2014 Fair point, but I'd take a punt on a NZ new manual, just expect to recharge the a/c every 4 years.
Allanw 1071 Report post Posted January 31, 2014 1995 Daihatsu Mira 850cc 3 cylinder. Mine sounded AWESOME! My Cappuccino was better, as it revved SO much higher (though I only ever got a bit over 8), but not "relatively common" - last I knew there were 32 registered in NZ, and the guy who brought mine has 4! Shame my Wagon R turbo was 4 cylinder - sounded boring. The Subaru EZ30's do sound great... That's why one's going in the VW bus next
CSET 583 Report post Posted February 4, 2014 IMO Nissan RB or Subaru EJ have to be the best affordable Jap engines that fit the bill for mid-range noise.
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted February 4, 2014 ^^^^^ Plus 1. I had an RS Legacy with factory STi pipes for years and it did sound great. Even when I heard it being driven off, stolen. And the RB has a great burble.
Young Thrash Driver 1020 Report post Posted February 4, 2014 E36 325 have a nice noise, standard. Also, my very first BMW was a pfl E30 320, the baffles in the muffler had all collapsed and it sounded gnarly as. You could always go to repco and put a cannon on the Corolla yo... The 88 - 92 vr4's sound pretty angry with 2.5" straight piping from the turbo. Problem is they're all clapped out now. Molested and riding on bump stops. M5V8 337 Report post Posted February 4, 2014 BDA twin cam Ford motor's (escort). Any Nissan RB engine but a RB26/30 with a big single turbo can sound amazing. Any of the old Audi 5 cly turbo motor's. Any cosworth engine. (Sierra or Escort) Pretty much any V8 AMG. Even the newer ones with the turbos. The old 4AGE toyota twin cam can sound wicked on full chat esp the supercharged ones when you underdrive the blower.
