BMW Performance Parts NZ

Unfortunately the parts I am wanting for my car have hit over $400NZD to bring in from US, so sourcing local suppliers.

I am after:

Hawk HPS Brake Pads, or another really good brand that is suitable for the track.

Heavy Duty Front Control arm Bushes - BMW/Viaco don't last (last set went for 6 months) so after some good, heavy duty ones - anywhere in NZ?

All of course for 2000 E46 6 Cylinder (323ci)

And then I found a supplier of Motul Brake Fluid - but if someone has cheaper for Motul 600 at $32.. let me know.

I have done the Google thing, but nothing proven for BMW. If I can't find what I need, I will bite the bullet and do two separate orders.. I have around $65USD to fill on an ECS tuning order (incl Shipping) so if anybody does want something, I can do that for them for cheaper shipping than if they wanted to bring in themselves.

I will be placing the order Monday/Tuesday if no suppliers in NZ are found...

There are plenty of suppliers of race grade pads in NZ ,

 

You could try  Racebrakes, 0800 race brakes , not sure if Steve Currie is still there - they do  several versions and they also bond specific materials like  Mintex &  Pagid 1144 and 1166 onto stock backing plates

1144 is a  sprint type  material i.e. warms up quick and stops fast

1166 is an endurance pad, takes longer to warm up but more suitable for Targa and 6 hour type races

 

 If you are talking lower control arm rear bush on the chassis  again there are numerous options in Urethane from Stocks and Autolign

 

 Motul is available at specialist shops , I get mine from Moto mail the bike shop on College hill.

sorry should of stated front - they seem to be a bit hard to find in NZ.

I am needing a brake pad that can vary between track and street. Im looking at around $250+NZD for Hawks.. Any idea on cost from Race Brakes?

And yeah fluid is sorted for now :)

Motul rbf 600 is also sold as trd race brake fluid. Or trd sport brake fluid. Depending on market

Same stuff just different sticker on bottle. Can be had from toyota dealer for around $22 per 500ml.

Look on trademe as some dealers sell on there too

Sigh. So many bloody brands.

I want a perfect allrounder - and it would be easier if I could source them in NZ of course for a decent price - I'm looking at maybe 1 or 2 track days a year - not 20. So I think street could work out fine. If so, I know MillAnd do cheap enough OEM quality items, and I am sure Gavin at EuroItalian Can too.

My main concern is finding the right bushes - Viaco lasted 6 months.. Maybe try OEM?

Quite happy with Pagid S sport brake pads, excellent street pad and were more than fine for the ocassional trackday. Around $330 from racebrakes for an E34

think thats whats in mine at the moment, will be whatever Jon from JKSE put in a few years back.

just about time for some new ones though, 3 track days havent been kind, will definately need to be changed if i do another track day in it, plenty of meat for the street though.

I guess it is more exciting to go fast that to stop fast lol

Ebc have a good rep over seas but have seen them falling apart with hard use on track. And in cars much lighter than an e46. That was ebc yellow which is their rave pad.

So many.. What to choose.

Going with Motul Fluid (600)

Still unsure on Brake Pads.

After having the brakes fail at Taupo, I am putting the effort in.. It's just picking the damn things! And then rotors skimmed too. $$$

My bill for the car is taking over its purchase price.. Haha. The price you pay to play

Sometimes I think people can become far too "absolute" with their opinions.

 

I have Hawk HPS fronts and they cost (well) less than NZ$200, Kayne Barrie (among others) can get them in. Lots of dust but also lots of bite for on the road and they have a very positive feel. They don't take any appreciable time to warm up. They've recently done 8 hard laps back to back at Puke without fade and to be honest that's all I expect from a hybrid pad.

 

I recently (right before Puke) changed my rear pads from "crap" (Repco $30) to EBC "Green Stuff" and all I can say is "holy sh*t" the difference is night and day and they also bring my front brakes to life (it's all about bias). On the same day a Puke they did not let me down. These cost me NZ$135 from Mazda NZ.

 

Really I think you'll be fine with Hawk or EBC... you're more than welcome to come and brake test my car if you want to know how they feel.

 

PS - I think the green pads look ghey. :(

Thank you. I appreciate the in depth there. For all knowledge based on brakes, I don't really know a lot because tbh, OEM did me fine and this will be my first track day with my own car, so it's all new to me.

I am looking at going all 4s with one brand. I think EBC Greenstuff is about $15NZD cheaper than Hawk.

I am looking at around $250NZD incl shipping for a set of fours of either.

I have seen HardRace and Meyle Bushes on Trade me - but around $60 more than shipping them in.

I can get Lemforder, and Meyle.. I would go for Powerflex but like all humans - I am on a budget and my brakes are the most important factor for me.

Hate to say it, but the perfect all rounder is stock BMW. There are many many reasons for this. Just trust me on that one :)

If you want full performance go pagid or ferodo. Beaware however that it will increase disc wear a lot more.

I would then assume that Textar would be sweet since they are the Suppliers for BMW? Don't want to pay $50 more just a bmw name

For brake fluid go and see Exedy in Wairau. They also do Elf oils.

Motul 600. Don't bother with the 660.

Hawk, Endless or Stock for pads. Decent semi track pads in the front and stock in the rear is a good combo.

Mintex 1166 will be shot after one race weekend in my old E30. Not enough value for the $.

EBC are sh*t. They fell apart in both my E30 and E34.

Bushes get from overseas or get them made by Dan Slater. But his will be solid and will need replacing more often. But no movement.

Okay.. Hawk HP Plus For Front
Textar For Rear (Orginal Supplier for BMW Anyway)

I seriously didn't realise brakes could be this hard to choose from.
I can go OEM, but for $20 more I can get a full set of Hawks which are so far winning the lead with most recommendations both on BS and outside with fellow car enthusiasts.

on that note.. I now have $100USD spare to spend to fill up my order - so if anyobody wants something from ECS tuning, let me know :)

Whoa!

 

I think you want Hawk HPS pads if they're going in a daily driver. Especially if you want to match them with OEM rears. The HP+ is a really track oriented pad.

 

My previous references were to Hawk HPS, not HP+.

 

Also I didn't make it clear earlier but if I had a choice I would not have mixed and matched my pads front/rear. If you go with the same brand then you minimise your bias/balance concerns - it can be a bit of pot luck otherwise as I discovered (unintentionally).

Originally was Front and Rear Hawk HPS.

Have had a look at a few reviews and the HP+ proved it selfs as a good pad.

Im just stuck between which two. Mmm.

DriftIt - I haven't yet but will be by tomorrow as need them landed this week to be in car by next week

You don't need to warm up the HP+ pads. You are not going to come to a stop sign and sail on through on a cold morning.

They are just much more effective when hot.

There is no harm in running them on the street. You will wear your rotors a bit quicker though.

Realistically how much track work are you going to do? And how hard are you going to push? Standing on the brakes after the 100M mark at 200KPH for turn 1 at hampton for 10 laps at 100%? Then the HP+. The stock E46 is a fat car though. With the HP+ you prob won't reach their limits which could give you good peace of mind.

I was going to see if I could sneak in a fluid pressure bleeder into your order. But the shipping for it is a joke at $70USD. The item is only $99USD....

HP+ are a good pad, I have some more on the way from the US now, and agree with the above comments.

As mentioned before, don't forget about the front/rear bias. Something as "racy" as the HP+ in the front would be a bit out of balance with OE in the rear. Wouldn't be an issue on the road for normal use, but at a track day it could get a bit interesting late on in a session once the HP+ are working well and the rears are starting to go off a bit.

Or you can re-think looking for the "perfect" pad as one way or the other everything you end up with will be a compromise and go for a second set of pads specifically for track days and use road pads for the other 362 days of the year...

be careful skimming rotors.If you go over 400 you dont always have to pay gst etc...its the luck of the draw.Do you feel lucky? Do ya??

I have pagid rs orange on mine. 299 inc gst from race brakes. Its what the cert man asked for... very expenny.
