316ti Race Car

Recommended Posts

Thought I would start a thread to track progress of the 316ti race car. The bulk of the parts are coming from the e30, I'll have a rolling e30 (as per my sig) shell left over at the end of it if anyone is keen.

Here it is as it stands currently, looks average and is the most uninspiring car to drive with a mighty 100hp at the fly.

Good work fella. Does the rolling E30 shell come with or without cracks...?

First round of progress:

Front suspension and brakes swapped. Rear to be done this week as well as drive line teardown. Aim to have it finished by the end of May.
There are some huge advantages starting to show already, because the motor is going into a car it was designed to fit, the motor is sitting about 6 inches further behind the front axle than it was in the e30. This tied in with the fact the wheel base is about 7 inches longer makes for a far better handling car.

The front wheel is so far forward due to:

offset lollipops

M3 EVO arms

The Camber plates being quite far forward compared to standard M3 tops.

Suspension and brakes done! Also test fitted the rear wing. Only the motor left to swap across now.

Running a shitload of camber in the front to get the RK's to fit.

Hey James what are the specs on the RK's?

17x8.5 ET15, they only fit because there is near 6 degrees camber on the front. But it will be flush at around 4 degrees

So even though nothing much has been happening on the car itself, many parts have been acquired in order to finish it off:

Crank and other parts needed for the engine rebuild which will start next week.

Original Headers

6 speed Gearbox

Original MZ3 Radiator (3 core vs 2 and also 1cm thicker than M3 one)

E36 TDS oil cooler (20% larger than factory M3 one).

DS2 aka sunflower staggered wheels.

Engine mounts and other various fittings.

At this stage we are going for 100% BMW parts approach and with a bit of luck it will be mostly together by the end of August/Start of September.

I am also going to have a big cleanout once I know whats left over, just off the top of my head:

-The E30 shell with 316ti suspension and M3 bodykit, willwood pedal set, E36 steering rack, alloy rad and oil cooler, 120L drop tank, roll cage, adjustable anti roll bar.

-E36 M3 front ARB

-S50B32 headers modified to fit E30 with E36 Rack

-S50B32 crank with damage, can be repaired but will need largest oversize bearings (its borderline so would probably only be suitable for road car that not going to be stressed)

-E36 5 speed ZF gear selector (was modified from a 6speed)

-M50 5 series sump and oil pump.

heaps of other odd parts but i'll create a master list on bimmersport before going on trademe.

E36 M3 Wheels Fitted, looks as good as a Ti can. Only the motor and gearbox left to fit which will be happening towards the end of the month. The E30 will be listed on trademe tonight as I no longer have any use for it.

316ti is not so much a sleeper, more just sleepy!

The proper motor + 6 speed should pep her up a bit though!

The 1.6L auto is managing to get into the 1:32's with ease at Hampton, brakes could be optional as it gets to 120km/h going into the final corner, drops to 110km/h and then rises to 120km/h on exit, then only to reachs 139km/h by the end of a 600 meter straight. Can't wait to see what it does with the m3 motor and manual gearbox as its 10km/h quicker around the corners (even with road tires) than what the e30 was doing.

Engine built and installed with the 6 speed box.

Now need to do the wiring and fuel system. Also waiting on the driveshaft to be shortened.

Maybe 2 weeks away from driving under its own power and not to far away from doing a test day.

Seems really weird that this car should be quicker than the e30 as it looks standard as. Going by the corner speeds I was doing with the 1.6, a high 1:10 around Hampton Downs is on the cards with the 3.2L

Got most of it done.

S50B32 Rebuild

S50B32 Conversion

6 Speed Conversion

Rear Battery Conversion

E36 M3 wheel/guage cluster conversion

After market VDO guages install

E36 M3 front suspension and brakes, re-valved ohlins

318ti Rear suspension, E46 325i Brakes, re-valved bilstiens and Rebuilt LSD with Z3 Diff cover.

E36 Motorsport sway bars.

List goes on....

Starts and runs well, might take it for a drive this weekend.
