225 tyres arent necessarily "ginormous" but they do look pretty huge on this particular wheel. must be like 6.5" or 7" wide or something.

but even with "stretched" or narrower 205 tyres those wheels' offset looks pretty low

I don't follow? If you look the tyre width is actually the right size for that rim.

They're not stretched inwards or bowing outwards.

Are they staggered wheels and you have the wider wheels on the front not the rear?

they cant be wider wheels on the front as if you look at the size its 225 but the tyre kind of bulges slightly over the rim so the rim width is 7" max

Surely 55's are not standard fitment for a 17 on an e46?

My motorsport e46 had 225/45/17 for fronts from the factory.

It would mess up the gearing and the speedo surely?

Not to mention making the car sit higher.

^ fair point. 55 profile is huge. 225/45/17 is the correct size for fronts and 245 40 17 for rears if staggered for rears otherwise keep same front and back.

what he said. You could maybe tuck em in with a little machining depending how much room you've got with brakes/strut clearance. Personally I'd swap those tyres onto some correct offset wheels that will track properly.
