///MPROVD 131 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) Hey guys, just wanted to share some picture of a set of BBS LM wheels I've repaired. Such a shame to see nice/rare wheels forgotten and sometimes scrapped. So I gave these a new lease on life. Wheels were very curbed, bent and a few flat spots, so I stripped them apart, gave them a good clean, soaked bolts and cleaned them with a tooth brush. The curbing (missing chunks) were welded back up and some small cracks around bolt holes were welded up and redrilled. The flat spots in 2 wheels were then removed and all wheels were made true again. The excess welds were machined back. Then finally, finished polished. I had to find a full set of center caps which was quite tricky and expensive. Long story short, I ended up buying another set of wheels and using the caps and then selling on. Didn't paint the centers as a new project came up for my M3 and didnt have time to paint but would have painted in the original silver had this gone ahead. Hope you enjoy! Ahmedsinc 414 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 What mucking fuppet scraps BBS rims?!?! Nice work on the resto, only thing I'd do differently would be to have the lips done with a satin finish instead of polished, but that's only my tastes
Gaz 1060 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 What mucking fuppet scraps BBS rims?!?! You should see the state of my Hartge wheels, the previous owner had them on a Commodore which should give you an idea.

hybrid 1043 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 I think thats been the problem, 5x120 fits commodore so lots of our decent wheel stock has gone through the buthole of trademe and out the otherside. Both my sets of LMs where in similar order when I got them and I restored them both back to mint. The only redeeming factor is you can get them for cheap when they look like this. Nice work on the resto.

Nice work on the resto. Thanks. Yes i agree but also with the massive influx of replica/cheaply made wheels lots of the quality damged wheels are coming back around and with a new appreciation of genuine wheels especially on the euro scene are getting repaired and restored. Ive done a few wheel over the years and its almost been for the fun of it most dont even make it to the car haha but its worth it because more genuine wheels make it into the market

gjm 3258 Report post Posted January 22, 2016 Any tips for doing this? I was trying to find an excuse for you to do mine for me, but couldn't remember what it was that I was so sure you owed me a favour for... Seriously - if you have any more you're doing, could you do a photo essay?

Maybe have some photos of your wheels are the 3 piece? There's gotta be something... (He said hopefully!) Lol I've done a bit of rim refurb in the past but not on split rims, and I did have access to a monster lathe (12' bed) at the time which made life a lot easier. Stripping the rims isn't an issue but I've no real idea how to go about tidying lips and such by hand.

///MPROVD 131 Report post Posted January 22, 2016 Yeah that can work. Then go through all of the sanding grits 80-3000 and then use a polishing compound on the end of a drill or polishing machine of sorts. I can help if you want to get it done professionally know of a cheap place

His family understand his cumpulsion for wheel collecting, multiple sets adorning garage, dining tables, and car boots. They care as much as to assist with the precision engineering some of his most audacious restorations. But if one should ask what else he keeps in the closet along with his wheels, and one is met with stoney silence... Seriously though, awesome effort.
