treone 648 Report post Posted April 13, 2017 Been beemer-less for a few weeks and have taken the plunge on this: Picked it up after work. I have a drive of about 25kms home. I get halfway. I glance at the dash. And I see this: Oh the joys of BMW ownership. Why do I punish myself? Now the fun begins with getting it sorted...
Olaf 3320 Report post Posted April 13, 2017 Looks nice mate! It may not be as bad as you think; could be as benign as a coil. V8 and four wheel drive - cool!

treone 648 Report post Posted April 13, 2017 Cheers. Yes hoping it will be an easy fix. Already made the dealer aware so confident that it will be sorted. Its a 2001 4.4l Sportpac ex-japan with 199kms. Went to look at it a couple of weeks ago and was impressed by the condition it was in and the price! Had a good drive of it last weekend and a deal was done. I'm not being too fussed, I drove my X3 for 6 months with its engine light on haha. Expecting it to be a coil or 02 sensor etc. As advised by TermiPeteNZ a MBI was essential!

Autoglym 255 Report post Posted May 2, 2017 Good luck with the repair,at least you purchased it from a dealer, my son inlaw, purchased an X5 for my daughter through trademe, has major problems, trans needs replacing & the timing chain, was supposedly replaced but has not set up the vanos system correctly & the seller, cannot be found, wont reply to any correspondence, so is currently going to court We currently have it blocking my driveway, as we feel it is unsafe to drive!! the engine power wise is so flat, my Hiace van would out accelerate it!! treone 648 Report post Posted May 3, 2017 It went back to the dealer last week. They had it for 3 and a bit days. Got it back on Monday with everything sorted. They said they replaced an 02 sensor (not sure if it was one or all 4. My guess is none :-)) and brake pads for the 'check brake linings' check message. Well two days and 120kms later engine light and check brake linings make a reappearance lol Already contacted dealer and hope to be taking it back tomorrow - but we will see. When I first took it to their mechanic he initially said catalytic converters - which is not covered under MBI. Dealer has been good so far so hopefully they will have it sorted. I'll then do an oil and coolant change, and find out what else mechanically may need fixing... then put a plan in place to utilise the MBI! I must say after a month and 600kms it is pretty awesome and enjoy it. has me thinking why I didn't get one earlier! But its no M5 that's for sure haha. Barry - unfortunate situation your son-in law is in - hope it all works out!

M3AN 4016 Report post Posted May 3, 2017 I'm pretty dumb but isn't that a gearbox warning light rather than an engine warning light?
TermiPeteNZ 1319 Report post Posted May 3, 2017 Frustrating. I reckon ask to see the fault codes, or take it in somewhere with a decent scanner with the full detail

Looking at my old X5 manual I downloaded - it looks like the 'Service Engine Soon' warning. "If the indicator lamp comes on either continuously or intermittently, this indicates a fault in the emissions-related electronic systems. Although the vehicle remains operational, you should have the systems checked by your BMW center at the earliest possible opportunity." "An illuminated lamp informs you of the need for service, not of the need to stop the vehicle. However, the systems should be checked by your BMW center at the earliest possible opportunity. Under certain conditions, the indicator will blink or flash. This indicates a rather severe level of engine misfire. When this occurs, you should reduce speed and consult the nearest BMW center as soon as possible. Severe engine misfire over only a short period of time can seriously damage emission control components, especially the catalytic converter." "A fuel filler cap that has not been closed all the way will set off the Service Engine Soon lamp. When the filler cap is not properly tightened, the OBD system can detect the vapor leak and the indicator will light up. If the filler cap is subsequently tightened, the indicator should go out within a few days." Edited May 3, 2017 by TermiPeteNZ

I'm pretty sure that it is an EML issue (02 sensors or cats). It actually drives fine so I'm not overly bothered just as long as the dealer gets it sorted. Thanks for the advice and if it this is a recurring issue then I will take it to a Euro specialist and get it sorted properly. X5's are awesome! And I'm sure my one will be awesome-r when its sorted
treone 648 Report post Posted May 14, 2017 Quick update. Got it back yesterday after the dealer had it for the week. Was told that they replaced the catalytic converter(s?) this time. They said the engine light disappeared straight away after install. They reckon it is a process of elimination and if it comes back (lets hope it doesn't) then cause maybe plugs. Well we will see haha. So they have done 02 Sensors and Cats - I'm saying plural but I'm not that confident Next step is to change the oil, coolant and belts maybe, just so I know they have been done (and I have them handy so why not use them right). I also suspect possible oil leaks so will have that looked at and go from there. Happy happy joy joy...

treone 648 Report post Posted May 14, 2017 Thanks Pete. Well seems I spoke too soon. On the way to work this morning and the engine light decides to make another (re)appearance lol. Oh well 'round and round the merry-go-round' we go...

enzed4 9 Report post Posted May 15, 2017 Are you saying the dealer has not had the codes read, and is just guessing at what's wrong?? Seems bizarre if that's the case. And very frustrating for you having to go back again and again...

Seems bizarre if that's the case. And very frustrating for you having to go back again and again... I have seen the mechanic hook up their (Snap On?) diagnostic reader so I'm sure they are seeing the codes. Trouble shooting and then remedying them seem to be their issue. Which is why I think they have reverted to go through the obvious and then cross it off lol. So quick update: It went back to them on Thursday. They said they will change the plugs this time and it should be ready by that afternoon. Take your time I say. Well - they contact me on Friday afternoon and inform me the catalytic converter that they replaced was faulty. They are now waiting on a replacement. I said keep it as long as you need to get it sorted properly. So we will see how they go. To be fair they have been great to deal with and are doing their best to get it sorted and provide a loan car each time. Although it is frustrating having to go back to them every week so far, It is not as frustrating as having a Swift or 1.5 Impreza to run around in. I'm finding that they are not that comfy to drive Porirua-Wellington daily nor are they that fuel efficient! Shoot me if I ever say I'm going to buy one of these haha

Seems bizarre if that's the case. And very frustrating for you having to go back again and again... It's not always as simple as reading a code and replacing the faulty part. Most of the time codes don't pinpoint the faulty item, all they say is that, for example, the O2 sensor is returning incorrect values. This could be a faulty O2 sensor, catalytic converter, leak in the exhaust, faulty ECU.. list goes on. Best of luck getting it sorted Treone, hope it doesn't end up costing an arm and a leg!
treone 648 Report post Posted May 21, 2017 Cheers Statek I know exactly what you're saying as I've been there done that before lol. It seems that they are choosing to go through the list - sensors, cats, plugs. Coils and MAFs will be next on their list...

I really can't fault them, but I do suspect that they are doing the cheapest fixes possible (and that their patience may be running out) . Replacement cat should arrive tomorrow and then fitted. I'm expecting to pick it up on Wednesday and hopefully get at least three days of no lights . Edited May 22, 2017 by treone

Ha - I wish it was as easy as reading a code and replacing the faulty part . That's not what I was suggesting, but was just trying to determine if the OP had actually had the codes read at all, as it would be strange if they hadn't been read. Even vague codes may be better than no codes.... It seems like the repair place is on the way to getting it fixed (faulty Cat?) so hopefully it'll be back on the road without any more problems soon
eliongater 718 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 Shouldn't you take it to the vet if your cat is faulty? You can read the codes yourself, I do it with a Bluetooth obd2 adapter and torque lite on android
