Recommended Engine Oil for 2009 E90 335i?

Hi,

I recently acquired a fairly low mileage (40,000km) NZ NEW 335i and I'm wondering what engine oil to put in it. Castrol EDGE Professional E 0W-30 has been used in previous services which isn't available to Joe blog.

The Castrol Oil finder application lists these as suitable:

EDGE Professional E 0W-30
EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4
EDGE 5W-40

Your thoughts?

The correct oil for your car is 5W30 so none of those. Would have thought it come up on the Castrol oil finder seeing as they are the approved oil for BMW

this is not the right page though.. it starts off by saying "IF none of the approved GRADES is available blah blah"

so flick back a page or two you should find the correct grade. which is undoubtably 5w30 and/or 5w40

Just because BMW supplies it doesn't mean its the be all end all of "right". Just means it's the fluid that they buy in bulk that covers spec.

I thought BMW used Shell lubricants these days?

Surely anything else will blow up your engines?

Dealerships use Castrol and has been for decades. prior to that was Mobil.

Gotta put another plug in for Penrite HPR5, or Ten tenths 0W40.

Thanks for the advice guys. Putting in Caltex Castrol Edge 5w30 A3/B4 (ie. what repco sells) which is what I've been using on my 06 330i.

The main reason I was asking is when I looked through the service history I noticed Burgers used a Castrol Edge Professional oil.

Either way, it makes a mockery of the whole "approved oil" regime which is just a marketing exercise that far too many otherwise sensible people believe in.

Do they have electricity? BMW swapped to Shell in 14/15...

no they get it new more than weekly,

Actually after this post came up i messaged an ex bimmersport member who works there, he confirmed my eyes were correct, and said they wont be changing to Shell any time soon either, and is the same at the Wellington , Palmy and Christchurch Dealers as well. Cant speak for the other ones as part of a different dealer group.

Oil is oil at the end of the day, and BMW AG is a different entity to both BMW NZ and the individual dealers, most of which have more than one brand under thier belt here in NZ and probably overseas too.

And whilst I don't dispute your research it's difficult to know what to make of it. BMW officially moved to Shell years ago (and made a big song and dance of it, as did Shell), I can't imagine the circumstances (or supply chain) under which some dealers still use Castrol.

Seems to me to be some confusion that BMW should front-foot to clear up. If your oil cap says Shell and the dealer uses Castrol what do you do?

Although I agree with you at the end of the day oil is oil - "OEM approved" is just marketing BS. But some people do care...
