You could DIY these no problem.  There is nothing difficult about it other than getting the car up on jack stands.
But make sure you know the filling process for the gearbox.  It is not as simple as filling it to the fill plug.

Get a kit from somewhere like fcpeuro.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/BMW-parts/128i/Transmission/?year=2008&m=20&e=2053&t=5&b=9&d=829&v=

But with NZ's currently very poor exchange rate you would only be saving $350.

About a couple of weeks. It progressively gets worse.

As this gearbox is in around a dozen other cars including some American stuff there are a few fixes online.

One is a product called Dr Tranny's Shudder Stop. After a proper service and this I have not had it shudder again in around 40-50k.

Thanks to all the info that shared by people on this forum ( fingers crossed) the shudder in my 130i has been fixed without going down the route of "red herring" etc.

Symptoms were; no issues when engine cold but once engine warm, then under light load (and say 1750 rpm moving to 2000rpm i.e. -going from say 80km - 100km I would get a shudder as the gear box changed up ( but totally of if using the sports mode with higher revs).

Transmission (GM) has been serviced and so-far the shudder gone

Looks like a nice one. Love lemans blue.

With that one for sale I kind of had to lower the price on mine, which tbf I was going to do anyway. I'm itching to start my compact project so I think I'll keep dropping the price until someone grabs it. I had an offer of 9500 subject to it passing wof which I accepted but 2 days later when it passed, radio silence from the buyer...

Mine was behaving in a similar way.
Did you take notice of how much fluid came out?
Fingers crossed you have stopped it.

Is there a mod or way to replace the breather/oil separator on LCI 130i's without having to replace the entire cover?
Mine is blocked and causing oil leaks.

Found it.  For an N55 but the same process.
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1758775

What a stupid f'n design.  A part that has failed on every model of BMW since its introduction.  Suddenly they integrate it into the rocker cover...

Edit:  Seems like the mod never works.  Stoked about chucking away $500 to fix what is a $30 problem on an E46.

Ah yeah looks like I am going to replace the cover.  Mod never seems to work for long.

I want to buy this just for the laughs.

Even comes with gaskets haha.

Hope you don't have to replace the ABS pump again.  That's a $4500 part :D

So is this a bypass of the OG oil separator?

Yep, and still routes excess oil back to the crankcase.

Found a good review on DIY 130i factory muffler mods including cutaway pics:

https://www.babybmw.net/threads/n52-130i-125i-exhaust-mod-diy-with-135i-and-resonator-pics-info-too.127953/

In summary:

  • The N55 box is a definite, proven noise upgrade over N52. The N54 backbox is almost identical to N52 box internally, and it makes little difference to the stock N52 sound. Do not pay N55 money for an N54 part!
  • The N52 resonator is has 20 rows of 5mm round perforations, the N54/N55 (135i) resonators both have only 3 rows, the N54T (1M) resonator is just a boxed-in Y-pipe (i.e. isn't actually a resonator at all).

FYI.  Be very careful with exhaust volume.
At the Police Officers discretion they can Pink Sticker your car for excessive noise.
If this occurs you will be required to undergo an official noise test.  Once completed you are then required to certify your exhaust.  Even if you do all this you are still at the mercy of the Police Officers discretion in the future.  They are not bound by your new cert at all and require no proof.

Was recently reading a story in a unofficial certification help page of someone who just went through all this.  Even changing back to a stock exhaust did not help and they still needed to follow the process to remove the green sticker.  Cops are using it in a way to temporarily get vehicles off the road loud or not.

Hi all.

Looking to get back into the 130i world.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/947775921960959/permalink/9950220711716390/

Have seen this number, with 109,000kms. Have chatted to the owner and he's got a stack of paperwork which is good, but the issue is it has the handbrake light on 24/7, as well as the brake pad service light too. Also has a parking light symbol on as well.

Being in Northland I can't view it (I'm Auckland based). What are all your thoughts on the matter? Worth the big drive?

Rego rings a bell, wasnt it a forum members? Parking brake is a simple system, its cables and drums inside the rear disk, not a major no matter whats gone wrong (probably a switch)

That sub makes me sad :D

IIRC the parking brake light can also be on if the brake fluid is low, so worth checking that or the sensor
