  3. Told you I would get some flak, so be it but some of the info came from guys on here about 12 months age when I was looking to buy my first bmw. Nick021 point taken, just passing on info received that was all Drifter 340i V8 are you talking about the engine only or the whole vehicle weight-saloon one occupant, ready for road, tank full from BMW hand manual no reason to doubt it. 530i manual box kg (lbs) 1605 (3538) 530i auto 1635 (3604) 540i manual box 1705 (3759) 540i auto 1735 (3825) M54 straight 6, DOHC, 24v with Dual Vanos, 2000-present, 126kg, 277lbs used in late model Z3 all E39 and E46 six cylinder models S62 V8, DOHC, 32v, solid lifter valve train with dual vanos and individual throttle bodies, 1999-present 158kg, 348lbs used in E39 M5 and Z8

Paul the v8 e39's are well know for cooling troubles as the k's get up, water pumps, radiator, thermostat, expansion tank etc. Most of the yank sites make mention of it from around the 80,000ml mark even if they have been well maintained things just seem to give up the ghost so to speak, they do a complete cooling system overhaul. The headlight adjuster support brackets also give trouble they become brittle and brake, headlights get fogged up either by moisture or the covers become discoloured. The steering is the re-circulating ball type not as precise as rack and pinion. Balance is a little off due to the weight of the V8 motor compared to the 530 no doubt their are more. Put apart from that it does look nice, a light up grade would make it look very tidy. Price to me is a little steep going on age and k's alone. could get shoot down on that one. Allan

Welcome, 12 months ago I asked for much the same advice as you and was told if my pocket could extend get yourself a 530i, IMO a better all round balanced vehicle, ended up with a facelift 02 model. I have not been sorry, have to say be careful of the Singapore imports as mine was and have had a few issues to sort out along the way, all part of the learning curve when owing a BMW. As mentioned get the vehicle you choose checked out by a BMW dealer with a pre -purchase inspection best money you will spend. Their are a number on Trade me at the moment and a few have already been posted for you. The other piece's of advice I was given where take your time and drive as many as you can while you look for the one that really fit you best. Happy hunting Allan

  11. How about by models E30, E46, E39, race cars etc each having a month of the year. Every body send in a photo of his/ her ride, sort them into the various models and work it until you get 12 good photos. That gets a good cross section of the Bimmers owned by members on the forum. Allan

  22. Yes, I am a BMWCC member also. As a first time owner of a BMW I have found the people to be friendly and forth coming with information if asked. Get involved in club events so you can judge for yourself, is this my scene or not. I personnel have been to a few events my first a show and shine bbq and I didn't know anyone but that soon changed. Since then a grass gymkhana heaps of fun and got to know a few more people, Driver training ( thanks Cain well worth it) and the mystery cruise held not long ago, even as an organizer I still had a great day. The club event this coming Sunday to help out, plus get to have a look at the cars. Even on this forum I have found, ask and you will receive what you seek. So when all said and done it's up to the individual in what it is they want to get out of it.That's my two penny's worth. Allan
  23. Hi one and all. It is great to get your fed back of the day out. As with all things done for the first time improvements can be made and that is what we are aiming for by getting your opinons. With out getting into to much detail nobody lost any points in the end for completing stages under time. As it just would have created a headache for the markers concerned. We did however know what times each section should have taken if driven at a reasonable speed with all the questions answered, i.e stage two 1hr 45 minutes approx not 1hr 20 I believe.If that was not speeding then you may need to check your speedo calibration or take the brick off the right hand pedal ha ha. The timed run was another classic, speedsters.Still a go day was had by all it seems. To 540Si, Gi Joe, I believe you go by a big thank you for making the effect to come and take part also to any others who had a reasonable haul to make getting their. Cheers Allan
