Cheers. Rocker cover was done with Dupli-Color Engine Enamel Low Gloss Black. Headers were done with VHT Flame Proof Flat Black. I used the on-vehicle curing instructions of the header paint, idle for 10 minutes, cool for 20 etc. Consequently this was used for the valve cover too. It also worked in well with checking the motor over after reassembly. Both surfaces were degreased and prepared with por15 metal ready prior to painting. Followed coating instructions to a 'T'. No problems after 1 month and counting.

I bought this car 2 years ago through the "special interest vehicle" scheme that NZTA have. I bought from a private seller advertising it on Pistonheads after I had been granted a permit. It is a 2003 model that has had 3 owners with 1 owning it for 8 of the then 10 years. My interest in the M5 goes back to 2002 when my son's father in law had one as his work car (believe it or not). I was lucky enough to get to drive it once and was very impressed. I considered buying a second hand one at the time but it was beyond my resources. That car was oxford/caramel so I've had a hankering for one like that ever since It did however get me into BMWs, my first being an E46 330d. I really enjoyed owning this, especially the torque it produced. Since then I have sampled a few of their torquier engines but the E39 M5 was always in the back of my mind as the benchmark. To get back to the said car, I took a punt on the seller being straight with me and he answered all my questions and supplied plenty of photos. He took it to an independent BMW service garage for an inspection. Their view was that it was a good example with the only rust they could find was on some of the fastenings and it would benefit from a clean up. Also mileage was correct. After I got it home I have spent a lot of time cleaning it and also getting my local BMW tech to bring everything else up to date. Including... Engine oil and filter, gearbox oil, rear brake rotors, skim front rotors, cam cover gaskets, gear shift link refresh, both bumpers off repainted, bonnet and door repaint, replace rear scuba boxes (supplied by Ray from one of his wrecks), new tyres, battery, mats and steering wheel. Plus a few shipments of fastenings etc from the UK. Here are some photos... There is a depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for the marque here on Bimmersport which I enjoy. I've met up with some of the M5 owners, Martin, Glenn and Darren who are all very helpful. I hope you enjoy my post.

Teach you how to drive properly? Where do you pull this rubbish from. It is not hard how to figure out how to push a clutch pedal down. So daily driving would be 99% and track driving 1%. Make sure the daily part is comfortable. Last thing you want it a shitty old manual driving in Auckland Traffic.

The single cam engines get leaky head gaskets and water pumps. Also the autos can give valve body issues other wise pretty good cars

interesting way to deal with the sun roof, I was thinking I was going to have to reskin the whole roof on my car, might look into doing that instead.

E34 540 for the win! Great car, as Lionel said they aren't the fastest or the best handling car ever made but they're well built and have enough of the good stuff to hold their own. Having owned an E39 540 I still prefer the E34 540, yes, it's not as well refined but its a rewarding drive if you push it a bit (and it feels fast as relatively low speed). Put a manual behind it, get out of traffic and you'll be hooked.

Yup. I looked at a UK 2011 E90 M3 earlier this week. One look at the wheels and you could tell it had been subjected to salt, the car looked twice its age... Exhaust hangers had rust, everything looked old and "cleaned" for presentation. Have seen some shockers over the years, a mate had a suspension coil break on a car that was only a few years old, as in it corroded and snapped... when it come to replacement he had to virtually cut the old suspension out as every bolt had seized, ended up having to replace all links, arms, etc.. and then there is George with the Lotus Exige, just have a look at the extent of the work he had to do to get his car up to the standard he was happy with. If you want a laugh, come down to my mates workshop and have a look at the cars and trucks before they go for compliance, have seen the likes of three year old Audi Q7's written off due to the amount of corrosion. Keep your UK cars, not for me, the dealers are sketchy as f**k and know that your average joe is non the wiser... happy to pay a premium for a NZ new car. Bottom feeders. Also.Im new so this is the first anti UK rant from me so I am exempt. Even if its an age old known fact that UK cars are sh*t. Also. Shot Dale.

That is really nice, would consider ridding the E39 for that

Without wanting to drag on with the ex UK rust thing. As Dave alludes to earlier. It is horses for courses thing. Some vehicles probably don't see the salt due to hybination, others may come from areas that roads are not salted. As with Japan - I have seen many vehicles (4WD's particularly) that are ex Japan & are rusty underfloor on bolts, suspension components etc, even seat mounting bolts. Vehicles that have obviously come from northern Japan (having a dual battery setup for cold climate) where the roads are salted. There is no doubt - if a vehicle is continually subjected to salt - it will corrode. Doesn't mean ALL cars are going to be subjected to this.

Spotted some guys in an E30 318 with BBS wheels parked in the obvious 'getting stoned' spot on top of Mega Mitre 10 last night. Also some wanker in a Red 05 M6 driving like a total piece of sh*t on the Northern Motorway. Had a go at the Mrs for hitting the horn when he cut her off due to him being in the wrong lane and suddenly changing without indicating. Rego: GAF703 And a nice E30 M3 I have not seen before. Silver and Stock. Driving along Oteha Valley road.
