welcome, Kylie. Your e39 should benefit from the skills and expertise of a trusted independent workshop (or indeed a BMW dealer if you're feeling flush). Welcome to the joys of BMW ownership. You'll want a good assessment to figure out what's up with the tractor noises, and, what's been deferred/missed/avoided that should be addressed to bring it up to spec. When they're well-fettled, our BMWs give joy for the way they drive and perform. They can be a bit fussy though, and don't respond to neglect. Fortunately you're in the right place, there are a bunch of experienced, friendy and enthusiastic BMW-heads around here, and we have the benefit of some excellent forum sponsors. You might want to contact Botany Motor Worx - you'll see *Glenn* around here providing intelligent and precise advice and moderation (sposor of the Maintenance room - to discuss your needs. Also take a look at the "Meetings" room, you'll see the Auckland contingient get together for cars and coffee meets regularly. welcome! Keep us updated on how you get on, and don't be afraid to ask. cheers

In that case Beller off Constellation drive is easy for you to get to or BM Workshop is a slight detour on your way to the CBD. Both are very good and won't rip you off. Just keep in mind that no BMW shop worth it's salt is "cheap" so be prepared... If you have any concerns about advice or a quote from anybody you can also post here and ask. Especially if you get a long list of parts to replace, that can become expensive.

Without trying to be constructive at all here... Could you videotape everything you try? That'd be worthy of popcorn and might end up edumacational for someone else having the same problem someday.

I agree with the above, where you take it will largely depend on where you live in Auckland - there are many good independents, no point in driving all the way across town to the furthest one. And as Olaf says, keep us posted with progress, we're typically interested in such things. Good luck!

Copy-pasted from here, which I used as a reference. I've personally used Bellars and endorse them. Bellars Motor Works Unit 2/3 Vega Place off Constellation Dve Mairangi Bay Auckland 0-9-478 7011 Andrew: Talk to Ken. Great guy and ex-BMW so knows his stuff. BM Workshop Grey Lynn 0508 349269 Grant: They looked after my E30 well once I moved to Auckland JP: Took my e30 in, came out with a large dent on the bonnet which they would not own up too. NOT HAPPY! Botany Motor Worx East Auckland 0800 269 583 E30stz/Andy: would recommend Glenn and the team down there M325is/Shelley: Prompt and helpful service and parts All are Highly recommended. Glenn from Botany Motor Works is on the forum, PM him if you would like any info.

Ok, after much deliberation on what to replace an E38 with. I've gone with the S8 Audi. Keeping the Silver E38, can't part with that. I looked at a few E65s and after throwing up in my mouth consistently, I decided I needed to look elsewhere. E60 550, been there. Options on large sedans with autos and pace with style are quite limited and this baby ticks all the boxes. It's a NZ New, 1 owner with full Audi service history, 140ks. love the look and the options boxes are well ticked. V10 5.2l 450hp, B&O upgrade audio, keyless entry. All the full A8 options. Drove back from Auckland, got 11.6l/100ks which was better then I thought. Included some spirited Action from the V10, sounds quiet glorious through the hills. will keep a running record of maintenance and ownership here

I have experience of a petrol E60. Didn't like the shape when it came out new. Didn't like it when I bought one. But it has now grown on me, both exterior and interior. IMO the E60 is a well set up and balanced car to drive. I have no experience with diesels at all but... what are things to be aware of? I'm not looking for an opinion on the 'looks' of the E60 just what does/would owning a 10+ year old BMW/E60 diesel entail? Or more specifically - a 2007 NZ 530D MSport LCI one :-) Looking forward to your thoughts and insights!

drill a fekking great hole in the boot lid for access, and when you're done, cover it up with a huge 1990's shopping trolley handle spoiler. job's a good un. oh wait, it's not an e30. I'll get me coat then.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I bought a NZ new 1986 E30 318i just over a year ago. Its the chrome bumper version, great condition, on the original plates, and was a one owner car before me (actually 2 owners, but in the same family). It came with a full service history- main agent until around 50kms, then independent garage and had been barely used for a number of years. I bought it in Auckland and drove it to Wellington without any problems. The car has just turned over 80,000kms (from new). I live in Lower Hutt and want to get it checked over in the first instance to see what needs doing now, what will need doing in the future, to look after it well. Any recommendations as to who would be good for servicing an E30? Thank you all

Ahh yes, usual information would be where in Auckland I stay haha. I live up in West Harbour but work in the CBD so am happy to go anywhere in between if they're recommended. Thank you for mentions in the meantime though, I don't know why I waited so long to join and ask the people that ACTUALLY know! :-)

looking good, Toby. A couple of questions/suggestions/comments having read through it. what bhp/torque are you expecting to make? I note you're looking to go coil overs; you going for stiffer ARB's to match? You going to uprate the braking to match the new power? May be as simple as slotted rotors/better pads/braided lines, or a retrofit from a newer model? suggest you store that lovely manifold in a box on the ground; a good shake (quake) will see it slip off your toolbox Water main under garage shouldn't be an issue, likely you'll need to encase it in thick concrete. My mate has a large stormwater drain under his, when he built it around '86 the council just made him encase it as part of their buildiing consent. That'd just increase your building and comliance costs. Keep the updates coming, looking good. Mind no surface rust forming on those parts, yeah?

The E31 all day, aesthetically a much better looking car IMO Sure the engine doesn't stack up but that's not ever the sole factor when chosing a car

Right it's clean (ish), now how do I get it sounding like a V8, just a nice rumble, nothing over the top. And can anyone blue tooth their phone to these these days and is it worth getting the phone in the car up and running? I doubt it as it looks like the battery is bulging!!
