FIXED! So it turns out the distributor was definitely out of whack, and needed to be re-adjusted, which is annoying as it's such a simple fix but because l-jetronic e30s aren't well-documented nobody mentions this in any guide. Here's where I put it, the tape mark on the side of the distributor is once again the mark where #1 cylinder spark plug wire is. Once again, huge thanks to the people on this forum who helped, especially Glenn from @B.M.W Ltd.

welcome, Graeme. Would be helpful to know which part of the country you're in - please update your profile. How many kms on the 545i? If you're new to the 545i, important to check and verify state of the valve stem seals (common failure on this model), and whether there are coolant leaks (the coolant tube that runs front to back in the Y of the block). Both of these items are expensive if you're paying for the work to be done. A well-sorted 545i is a joy to drive. 333hp and 50:50 weight distribution and 1650kgs, they're a great tourer, yet surprisingly nimble with Dynamic Drive suspension and Active steering. Found some new motivation to work on the car again, new coolant expansion tank and cap, new idlerpulley's and another steering pump, thanks to Troy, no more noise when steering.

Seems well serviced but you have to do all that or the car will stop working, it's not an added-value extra, servicing a car doesn't make it more valuable although failing to service it can destroy value.
