Finally the planets aligned.. It’s a week-end. The sun is out. An excuse to drive the convertible. The convertible is all together, and legal. Went to pick up daughter from her work shift, and this time we made it back in one piece and didn’t break down at Sylvia Park! Winning!!

After lurking in the shadows for the last two years and checking daily to see if my favorite build threads had any updates I thought id give this a go myself! Now before I start rambling I would like to acknowledge the public hatred towards compact's, Yes they are hideous and this one is defiantly not the coolest one In NZ but its my ugly duckling and it has provided me with connections to the most amazing people in this community and wealth's of knowledge that can not learnt from YouTube..... So we begin How It Began: While Making a quick trip to Weitz industries to grab a few bits for my 130 I noticed a small little compact sitting in the corner waiting to be harvested before turning into a coke can, At the time gas prices were at an all time High and the thought of a small economical German Rear wheel drive sounded like the perfect solution! Despite being warned by Nick that the condition was unknown and it was sold strictly as a parts car I already had my heart set on It and turned a blind eye to all the negatives while convincing my partner with the positives! While not entirely convinced she said yes and I was able to drive it home😀 After making a quick stop at the gas station I drove the short 4km home loving every second of it, Despite owning multiple Bmw's and having the 130i as a daily driver I couldn't help but notice how nimble and zippy it was! For a car that was sold as a entry level 90's Bmw the quality and handling already outdid much more expensive Toyota hatchbacks 10 years Newer! Unfortunately that's pretty much the last time I got to enjoy the Efficient 1.8L. While I was to busy admiring the absolute bargain I had scored the car was pouring white smoke the entire way home, after a quick investigation it was obvious that the 257,000km M44 blew its head gasket while I was gutted this finally gave me the opportunity to do what I had been scheming since I saw the car.. Hi people. I've bought a 130i to use for Targa Tour with my son and also track day duties. I'll be selling the 85 AW11 racecar I have had for the past 22 years as I think I've done my dash with club type racing. There's a couple of things to sort on the car, so there'll be a few questions asked and WTB's put in!! Cheers Simon

Pretty much the same as what I have on mine (except my rears are ET45) and no issues at all for me

Great work and write up. You make it sound so simple, I’m tempted to go out to the garage and start pulling something apart. I think I’ll resist and have a beer instead though.

Yeah manifold out is the next logical step for me. Will see from there. Cheers

Im got the manifold off on @hunter E39 atm so i took a look. The recess below the crank sensor is concave and slanted towards the rear, i sprayed brake cleaner into it and worked it way down the rear oil pan bolts\engine casting out the middle of the bellhousing.

Awesome! This is what Bimmersport is all about, Bimmer people helping other Bimmer people.

Safety is the trump card that gets pulled out of the hat any time they want to push through an unreasonable measure. Pure cynical politicing... they know that there is no counter argument to the Safety card. Pretty basic tactic used by government and quasi-governmental bodies when they want to introduce a draconian measure without having to provide any logical justification. Cheers... jondee

Well, was fun while it lasted... All 5 minutes of it. The heatshield thing wouldn't give me peace so once again returned to Pick-A-Part and nabbed a front section of a similar heatshield and mashed together an extension. Quite pleased with myself with how it turned out. Bolted up the exhaust with new hangers and fresh braces, started her up again, bled the power steering and cooling system, topped up oil, then dropped her down, torqued up the sway bar brackets and wheel nuts, ready for its first run. Went for a quick run around the block. The clutch felt a bit weird and will take some getting used to. First time driving a manual BMW so not sure how it's supposed to feel like. Probably down to it being a double mass flywheel and the clutch not bedded in yet. Lifters ticking away as was to be expected, otherwise ran really well. Was absolutely buzzing to have her up and running again. All the good vibes got wiped away though as I checked the underside. FFS Not a small leak either. Left a good trail all along the road as well. Absolutely pissing out engine oil. Gearbox out it is... I suspect it's the rear main seal. Thinking back now, I do remember being a bit unsure about it. I ran it in flush with the housing but originally I think it sat about 1-2mm proud. Thought it'd be fine, obviously mistakenly so. Remember seeing FCP Euro mention a special installation tool in one of their videos but then again others have just ran it in using the old seal with a block of wood so went with that approach. Must have messed it up somehow. Will hopefully see the issue once the box is out. Will just get this kit if that's the issue, don't want to trust myself with that again. Bit disheartening after spending my whole Christmas break on it but it is what it is, learning things the hard way. Not giving up.
