Removed the harmonic balancer to replace the crankshaft seal which had a very small leak. Decided the put a fresh Corteco one on given the mileage. Had to remove the radiator and drop the condenser down to fit my high torque Milwaukee which still took a few 5s bursts to remove it. Decided to make a tool to install given the 410nm torque and the $80 torque to yield crankshaft bolt, the local dealer surprisingly had one for decent price. My torque wrench only went to 350nm so it was that and a oomph. Was a bit careless with the flux core and welded the middle a bit on the piss but with GR\JP high tensile steel way its overbuilt for the job. New TRW LF-30 pump. Old one was starting to get noisy with glitter in P\S fluid. Not cheap at around $500 from Spareto and sadly made in China with a C&U bearing even, but at least its new and hopefully better than the other aftermarket ones or random 'rebuilt' ones Installed new belt Conti belts along with an INA hydraulic belt tensioner upgrade. Replace the stupid torx pulley bolt for a 16mm bolt to make your life easier

Good excuse to clean up the old system and re-assemble with new gaskets, nuts and E90 etc upgraded exhaust studs(shorter with e-torx head) Hand scotch pads, die grinder pads and a product called P21 polishing soap bought it up decent. Far better product to use than nasty Autosol.

Perfect weather to get these rear calipers painted this weekend. Started off with a sand down with 360 grit to ensure the primer had something to bite into. Then a double wash in wax & grease remover. I should have gone for a hot soap and water scrub first in hindsight. Installed the old dust boots and stuffed rags into the piston bores to keep the paint out. For the bleeder, cross over pipe and inlet I used trimmed down foam ear plugs Saw that in a YouTube video and it works perfectly !! Taped over the mounting surface so it's not sitting on paint. Painting was two coats of 'Paraloc' etching primer, then two coats of 2k single stage polyurethane. I did this 'wet on wet' at the suggestion of the folks at the paint place, so I did not have to wait for the primer to harden and then sand it ... definitely gets my vote as sanding calipers properly would be horrid.

Been a while since I had a proper fang in the E30 so great to get out today with a buddy and was great fun to switch cars for a while - with a polar opposite build - Supercharged M42 with 4.4 LSD / lightweight flywheel and Z3 rack - certainly made mine feel a bit lazy and luxury orientated haha. Must say mine looked pretty good in the rear view mirror 🤌🏽

She breathes. Lovely flu knocked me out for 3.5 days. Just to bleed the clutch and brakes, fit driveshaft, heat shield and exhaust, Temporary cooling setup(still choosing whether bootmount) And she could have been driven there. Oh, and an aux belt. 20240824_152409.mp4 20240824_152532.mp4

A bit of a photo montage of cleaning up the calipers. First time using this gel based stripper and the first application I had not shaken the bottle enough so it was a bit too thin instead of a gel that would sit on the surface with some thickness to it. Overall the process to get to this point was: Roughen up where the stripper would be used Brush on the paint stripper, wait a while then hosed off Used compressed air to blast off / lift additional paint which was lifted but hanging on Use stiff plastic bristle brush to further loosen anything you can Another roughen up with sand paper and then re-application of stripper Dry off with compressed air Carefully scrape off any softened material with screwdriver or chisel Reinstall sacrificial dust boots, bleed nipples and stuff rags into the pistons Sand blast any remaining bits of paint, corrosion etc If doing again I would have gotten a finer garnet (I got Toolshed 'medium') as even my shitty Aliexpress blaster gun was actually pretty good ... I think it'll be fine with primer then 2k single stage paint I've gotten.

The NAM3Forum guys hate on the 135i setup, supposedly those calipers are a bit junky but maybe that's just in comparison with M3 calipers. Probably still a significant upgrade over the 330 ones. I've had a set of 996 front and rear calipers sitting in storage for about a year waiting for a rainy day to rebuild and fit to my M3. Almost identical to the OE CSL brake bias with way better pedal feel. The stock brakes honestly are completely sufficient with decent pads and fluid even when I had them on track. I haven't quite been able to bite the $2000 bullet for new CSL front and rear rotors and rallyroad adapter brackets for a mostly visual upgrade but it's on the to-do list. The brackets from rallyroad are far superior, lighter (about half the weight), higher quality, and allow you to run the 98635193915 D737 shape pad which will sweep the entire M3 rotor, where the stock 98635293910 D738 pad won't. https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/main-forum/e46-2001-2006/3153-porsche-brembo-996-bbk-conversion - Very good write up comparing the different brackets Look forward to seeing how you go with this and what your impressions are.

BBS RG-R 18x8.5 ET38 on 245/40's Been on the look out for a decent set of wheels for awhile. E36\E46 wheel selection is pretty rubbish in terms of availability you if want something different in reasonable offset\tyre size. Saw these on locally on facebook along with set of similar LM's. Looking at photos i decided the RG's would suit a newer car like the E46 better. They are forged wheels at just over 8kg compared to 10-11kg style 72's, very light even with the tyres. Originally they had silver centers which i would of preferred, but beggers cant do choosers and they have been freshly power coated. Tyres fill the front wells great but do touch the fender lining under full lock as expected. Will be swapping out for current ones then moving over to a 235/40 square at some point. Gold center caps to replace to red ones if i can find some at reasonable price, otherwise ill swap BMW ones onto them. Part 2 of the DMSO clean. Didnt get everything as hot as id like and things were cooling down to fast to do a real throughout job but it works (completely black before). Used a vacuum bleeder to suck the fluid out which worked great, engine fired up instantly after cleaning Will do a another round in warmer weather to finish it off. Compression test after cleaning was 175-180 psi on all 6. Engine certainly feels stronger after doing these cleans, but be prepared for the exhaust to stink\smoke for ages if you do this part.

It's been a pretty quiet time lately. Winter, and recently Covid, have slowed me down. A sunny day yesterday in Welly, I thought I'd take Grey Thunder to run a couple of errands (recovering from Covid is taking some time), and I'm glad I did. I grabbed a phone shot of it parked in the sun, sporting the recently-acquired 15's. I think it's looking pretty spiffy! The extra half-inch of track is useful too, my initial impression is that the 15J7 setup better suits/matches the 14.5mm rear bar. Happy days. Now, to keep on with Covid recovery. Nasty business.
