Happy Birthday Jock, big 40 eh, ah I remember those days

What mileage has it done, has it been well serviced? You need to take the rocker cover off and see what the cam's like, flat across the lobes or worn? Then try the additive, think it's PRO-MA MBL8, works well but follow the instructions, will clean the lifters, won't fix anything else tho, get from repco etc.
-
You can't set the tappets in an M40 as they're hydraulic as you say. If you have a problem with them, then try an additive, or live with it. If that doesn't work then they may need replacing, probably about $5 or 6 hundred I would guess. The top end on the M40 is bad for wear and going clacky, could be cam, rockers or lifters, it's the expensive end of the motor. Good thing is it can all be done without removing the head or the motor, not too hard a job, so long as you're careful.

Would fit, but different rating, be too soft I think.

Handbrake has 2 cables, one for each side. Take the cover off from around the handbrake lever inside your car and you'll see where both cables finish at the base of the handbrake. See if the left side one is tensioned properly, or if its loose, tighten if necessary and check handbrake again. If this doesn't help, or the cable seems tight it'll be a problem at the rear wheel. Take the rear wheel off, Remove the calipers, and and use a 5mm allen key to remove the rear brake disk, opening up the handbrake mechanism. Make sure your handbrake's off when you go to remove the disk, or it won't move. May be siezed, or worn, or come apart, I've seen all the above happen. When you get to this stage you should be able to see the problem. Hope this helps.

Hi james, would think it's p/n,11211709681, a 12x32x10 bearing, that's what mine have all taken.

Quit moaning, you don't need brakes at Pukekohe. Just load your 75kg into the boot.

Can someone explain a Pre purchase inspection?

According to my decoder it's a 240/5 Getrag. It is a M40.so engine damper does apply -

Hi Eddy, the 242 won't fit behind the M40, has to be a Getrag 240 of maybe a ZF, most likely the getrag tho. Check your numbers? -

Guess that makes it a M10, pre f/lift 318. Not sure on the damper then sorry. -

Right hand engine damper The M40 has a small shock damper on each side of the engine next to the engine mount. Connects the engine mount arm to the front xmember. Not sure on cost, but very easy to change, 10 mins. Heater hoses, I'd change both, cheap insurance, and not hard either. Same bravo, bought a 4 door manual M40 for $800, did cambelt and all fluids, some of the hoses, changed steering rack to power steering, changed steering column, someone had bent it trying to break the steering lock when stealing it, total cost was $300 for parts, gave it to my sis for her kids to learn to drive in. -
I use double sided tape as well, with a dab of MS sealant on each side for insurance, not too much mind or it'll never come off.

Looking good Jimmy, like the spokes

Of the 5 318 f/l auto's I've wrecked, 3 have been 4.1's, other 2 were 4.45's.the only 318 m10 I've done was a med case 4.1. obviously some could have been changed, but the most common source for 4.1's I know of are 318 M40 autos.
-
Probably 4.27, but maybe 4.10 still?
-
Most likely 4.10 if auto facelift M40
-
fan's 32mm spanner, comes off clockwise, opposite to what you'd expect. Wouldn't expect it to be water pump tho, more likely thermostat or radiator from the sound of it?
-
Not if you have a car in the race series.
-
You're right, 323's stopped in Sept 86 if my info's right. Isn't it also possible to change the sensor position to facelift location with a few mods?
-
Facelift and prefacelift use the same box etc unless I'm mistaken, ie interchangeable..
-
You need to see if it is a small leak. If it's a small leak when it's cold, it will be pissing out when it's hot!
-
Sounds like a leak, check all the hoses, including heater hoses. Is the floor on the passengers side damp by any chance? Is your oil clean, no cloudiness at all?

Hi Jen, biggest PR hit for me would be sponsorship for the naked racecar, it is a BMW -
