I still think your battery's not holding a charge from what you describe as happening.Maybe your generator needs checking as well?

I think you'd be real lucky to get near that for a 23 yr old car, looks very nice, but they're not fetching that kind of price at the moment. I'd say closer to $2000 if you wanted to sell, may be best to sell wheels on their own and chuck a set of bottles on. Needs to go down, sits too high? Good luck tho, there's one born every minute.

I guess that it may be both batteries you tried were dodgy, if it starts with jumper leads the starter must be OK it's just the amount of charge it's getting, try a decent battery. Is the motor overheating, ie boiling when it gets hot? Is it using water? Are the sensors all connected up? What kind of coupe, 318, 320 or 325, auto or manual?

What cars did the med case diffs come from? E30's or others, and if E30's which varieties? Thanks.

Diff's as I got it, don't know the story behind it at all, same thread and nut in the centre as the small case I took out of my E30. Would think the fittings would just swap?

Thanks for that Gus, this diff is destined for my new Series car as I need a 4.1 diff for it. Would be prepared to swap for a small case 4.1 if someone wanted to, but would have to happen in the next couple of weeks for it to work for me?

Have a look here, http://ee1394.com/bmw/docs/factory/repair/en/index1.htm wait for it to load and click on Main Groups, then engine, then M40, then toothed drive belt - replace. Read and soak up, click on arrow at top to go to next page, there are 5 pages. You don't need to take the fan off separately, you can just use a 10 mm spanner and take the 4 screws off from the pulley behind the fan, slip the pulley foward to the fan and carefully take the 4 water pump screws out. There are 2 threaded holes on the pump, one at the top and one at the bottom, you have to carefully start 2 of the screws you have just taken out in these holes and slowly tighten, try to tighten the top and the bottom equally and you should find the pump slowly comes out. Take care not to over tighten any of the screws in the head as it is aluminium and you can strip easily if you overtighten. Once you have the water pump out you take the bottom pulley off, and then the bottom cover plate, and it's all in front of you, put back in reverse order.

Small case is 28.5 kg, medium case is 37.5 kg, 9 kg heavier. If the medium case is stronger, is it a better choice, the extra weight is low and at the back, no real problem?

Yeah, definately the medium case, just pulled a small case 4.1 out of my spare shell, considerately smaller and lighter.

From memory about $20, take the old one out and see if you can get it matched, one may come with the camshaft, not sure.

Yeah, my 316 is a 4.27, but my other 318's a 4.45? Is there such a beast?

Hi, just rebuilt my M40, make sure you identify the marks when you take the front apart, easy to get the cam off, replace the cam seal on the front when replacing the cam shaft. The worst is getting all the front off the motor, the fan, water pump etc, so you can get to the cambelt tensioner to release it to get the belt off. be a good time to change it as well for the cost of the belt? Any specific problems as you go, just ask. By the way, you need a torx socket for the cam cog.
