Kim, buy what suits you and what you feel comfortable in. If you enjoyed driving the compact, and it comes into your budget range, then go for it. Only thing I'd do is check the price against other E46 compacts to make sure it's the right price, and get a mechanical done on it. Remember most suggestions on here are from guys who know what they want, you need to get what you want, not what they think you want.

Not really, we get a full season on the track out of ours, including to and from meets, and track days and testing. Roughly 400 laps at 3k's per lap, so about 1200 k's of race use. Your tyre man should be able to help, Jonno? Must admit, they're slicks by then tho.

Manual box in a 318 for sure, do it easy in a day. There are a couple of 4 doors, doesn't seem to make a lot of difference to be honest. The 318 box is unique to that motor, 318 engine won't fit up to a 320 or 325 box.

Just 3 quick questions, If Oscar could log in, why did Laurence have to use his login? Computer only remembers login if you want it to, you have to tell it to, it's not automatic? Same tyre we use in the Race series on the E30's. Would highly recommend as a track come road tyre, stick really well, wet or dry, and we drove to manfield on them as well with no problems.

I wonder if the box is a genuine close ratio or not? Would add to the value if it was. I doubt it tho.
