BMW parts are covered by a 1 year and in some cases 2 year defect warranty...irrespective of who fits it. If the part gets damaged or fails because of poor installation by an installer.. it's the installers responsibility -

Thanx for your help Dave. The problem is not duplicating the emails, it's adding extra attachments which are coming up as a threat to my emails. I have also had booting problems since Monday as well. I've had to reboot a couple of times before it will open after the original "welcome" message

I totaly agree with Grant (hotwire). I also don't agree with this: " I'd be rather unhappy to pay $80/h for somebody to change the brake pads on my car because it's a low risk job that requires only elementary skill and tools" Taking wheels off and doing brakes is one of the highest risk jobs you can undertake. One interruption. like a phone call and you could end up killing someone. A high degree of skill, know-how and special tools are required on allot of late model vehicles as well. Scanners are required when replacing brakes on most of the late model cars now. Especially on cars with electronic hand brakes. Knowing when to say NO to a job is a skill too. When you can see your exposure to risk could be too high ( for what ever reason ) This can apply to people supplying their own parts to do jobs, especially if the quality or brand is unknown. Sometimes it's better to say NO, have a coffee & read the paper -

Small DIY compressors are cheap. The one at home cost me $180 about 8 years ago. If you need more tank capacity, get an old LPG tank and some fittings -
The original owner bought it back of this owner

You'll also need to learn 5 more different languages, and all the special Auckland road laws ie: Mercedes with flashing L/H indicators means they are turning right. A red light means you can still proceed for another 30 seconds. It'll take a while to get used to though.

I don't agree with using the oven though OR...obviously a microwave (joke). Compressed air is much safer for DIY. Check all electrical plugs, especially ABS and SMG if your car is SMG. High pressure water blasting on any of the electrical plug connectors needs to be avoided at all times. A compressor is much safer to use to do this. -

It's so much quicker to do that in the microwave though -
Were there any fault codes present in the DME when it was serviced ?? This should be checked when doing the service. Other than that, get it scanned first and see what that reveals.

Bastardised cars can be nice and also deliver more than what you might expect.... I know this.. and many others will also agree with what they have experienced. Think outside the square and don't follow a leader into the same old, same old fit this fit that DIY upgrade

Hi Glenn, thanks for your input although I don't understand the relevance of this comment. Have you mistaken me for someone who has done the aforementioned? In response to your previous comment: Fair enough that repairers can only install parts they sell but the reality is money is money. I'm not sure of your circumstance but I'm sure some repairers aren't in the position to turn away business, particularly in this economic climate. It wasn't directed at you at all Tristan, It was an add on to my reply to Juxu. Alot of repairers are getting fed up with diagnosing & helping people with their cars at a very low cost or a freeby to gain work, only to loose the work to a back yarder or mate when the problem has been identified. Our overheads are calculated on a labour + parts mark up less costs to run our businesses. We must guarantee our work and cover risk. Remove the parts margin and it's cheaper to drink coffee and not incurr the risk installing parts of an unknown source or quality supplied by an owner at a labour only rate.
