I hope this hasn't anything to do with things kinky..??

Intermittant oil changes are the most common cause of sticky lifters. I would just live with it unless it gets really bad. Can't damage the motor, you will just lose power if the clearances become excessive. (and get pssed off with the racket.. ) If you remove them and soak them in a very strong solvent that removes varnishes etc, you will probably correct the problem. To determine which ones are ticking, use a mechanics stethescope, or a screwdriver pressed into your ear, and move along the cover, you will quickly hear which ones are noisy. Will

2.25 pipe right through would be a good start, it flows better than the standard twin pipes, but the mufflers play a big part in the sound and power developed. I personally prefer the sound a twin pipe system with good twin resonators up front and a single, free-flow rear silencer makes though. Will

Hey, just to make sure, pop the rear cover off. If you can see the spider gears, it is non-lsd, if the spider gears are inside a big round casting, it is lsd. If someone like Gus had got his hands on this car sometime, the clutches could be shot to hell and it would react like a non-lsd.. Will

turn the one side shaft by hand, the other side must turn in the same direction ie wheels would both turn foward direction. If you remove both sideshafts, you will find it impossible to turn the one side and hold the other side. If the diff is 3.46 lsd, would be interested. Will

e21 engine rebuild - pics, nearly ready to start up
will replied to kiwipetrolhead's topic in Showroom
Next to the e30, the e21 is my next favourite toy... must get one sometime!! Yours looks really good!! Will -
a tree at my place had a similar close experience of the Graham kind this weekend too.. Will

As long as the discs are within spec thickness-wise after resurfacing, this is a reasonable alternative to replacing them. You MUST use new pads though, the old ones will damage your newly ground surface and not provide the same braking till they eventually bed in, messing up the discs in the process. Will

Graham lives just out of Kerikeri.

I would assume from the pics that the engine management computer box is toasted? May have to do some homework to find if this ran a modded chip. I'm pretty sure it won't be a standard box as I naturally assume that the motor would have been specced-up somewhat. Getting the right box may prove difficult. I can probably help with all the bolt-on bits on the motor, will just need some time to locate them. Just yell if you do. But if you buy a 320 with Ljet you should get them all anyway. Will

Beg to differ here, both wheels must turn in the same direction for it to be a LSD, if they rotate in opposite directions, it is not a LSD. Will

Early 320's had much the same engine config. I would suspect that the motor would be a basket case from the looks. ( the oil filler cap missing prompts this remark) You would probably need a running 323 motor to swap bits over like head?, cam? etc. Difficult to say without stripping it first to see what mods have been done to it. Well worth trying to restore IMO (within reason), I will give you whatever advice I can to help. Obviously a good 2door pre-f/l body will be your first essential purchase but a lot would depend on the condition of the drivetrain to continue with it. Just remember that it will always be a replica, no matter how careful you are in the restoration, so putting endless money into it will probably be unwise. Will

That's a much nicer looking wheel , techII is quite ugly imo.

e36 one won't fit e30, later e30 f/l motorsports/convertibles came with them, but they are rare. I have an e30 one and it won't fit my e36. The e30 O/D is 385mm Will.

If the noise is there with the car idling, in neutral, with the clutch released, and goes away when you depress the clutch, you have possible issues with the gearbox/clutch mechanism. The first thing I would do in this case is to check the oil level in the box. If the oil level is ok, and the noise is definitely coming from the gearbox, I would then drain the oil and see if there are traces of metal in the oil. Also, while you are under the car, (with it properly on stands and wheels chocked, of course..), start it and let it idle and use a mechanics stethescope/screwdriver to pinpoint the position of the noise in the clutch/gearbox area. (you put the handle of the screwdriver to your ear and stick the sharp end onto the box in various places, you will soon tell where the noise is the loudest. I think Repco sell the mechanics stethescope if you want hi-tech.. ) One other option is that the clutch release bearing is collapsing. This noise is normally obvious with the clutch released, and will quieten/go away when you depress the clutch pedal. This is why you should try to determine where the noise is coming from, will give you a clue as to whether it is gearbox or clutch. I doubt if the rotor/dizzy cap would be causing this noise. What do you mean by knackered? Are the contacts burned? If the cap/rotor are shorting the spark to earth intermittantly, it could cause the car not to rev and not allow the car to run smoothly. This could increase with rpm. Look for signs of tracking and use a multimeter on the rotor (with it installed) to check for leakage to earth. Check that the HT leads are the correct resistance, if these are reading high, can cause the dizzy/rotor to burn significantly as the spark struggles to get away. Will

cheers Sam, centre console too if it is available, should've said so in the first place. Will

Sam, with the amount of work you are having done, I would respray the whole thing. Metallics are difficult to match perfectly, your colour is notorious for looking fine in the daylight and then showing up the differences at night under certain lighting. Strip it to a shell and get it done all over, that is what I would do. I will be doing exactly that to my M325 in the near future. as it is also a metallic. I am fine with spraying solid colours, just have problems with getting metallics 100% Will
