first time i've heard of this problem... my fan shroud is still in tip top shape @ 245k the top also holds the return line to the expansion tank. cut the top off and you will expose that hose and prob get shredded by the fan. and without the top bit.. the fan would be blowing air upwards towards to hood and not towards the engine just bad maintenance by previous owner / current owner or bad luck.

need the rubber surround for the high stop on e36 coupe. the factory one that is built in under the parcel tray.

my symptoms was: standing still car would reach towards the red NO NO OMG NO LINE... then running it would go back down to normal. prayed my ass of in the car not to get any red lights.. really dont wanna stop... or going uphill would creep to 3/4. got really pissed/annoyed/embarrased by it coz it happened on a date !!.. next day parked it in the garage, rolled my sleaves up and off goes the fan + shround, coolant, hoses, radiator, thermostat, waterpump. thermostat was rust in colour and stuck open like only 6cm. Wpump haha.. mine still had the orig plastic impeller.. and i just touched it disintegrated. bought new one from gavin. metal impeller this time prob your fan clutch is not turning your wpump fast enough in idle and when you strain the engine.. wpump cant keep up.

exactly what happened to mine.. turns out the theormostat + waterpump was broke... thought it was just air bubbles in the system as well. or your fan clutch is kaput here was my waterpump after i took it out:
