BMW ISTA - ICOM Security Dongle backup- how to
M3_Power replied to M3_Power's topic in Electrical system
Are you refering to the XP mode introduced in ISTA-P 2.43?? I am trying to understand what you are getting at with your replies? XP mode is apparently just a simpler menu to prevent inadvertent access to important modules that dumb technicians aren't suppose to mess with- so not really "expert" as such. -
BMW ISTA - ICOM Security Dongle backup- how to
M3_Power replied to M3_Power's topic in Electrical system
What on earth is access EMA?? I have never heard of it and none of the popular BMW ecu related forums have anything on it.I am well aware there is a version of ICOM out there that doesn't require the dongle, but a lot of thr ones been sold are sold with one. -
I posted this up on another forum, but thought I would also share it here. Some of you maybe in possession of a working BMW ISSS that includes ISTA/D and ISTA/P. Most of these systems either require a cloned hardware ICOM or a virtual emulator ICOM to work. With the ICOMs these will come with an USB security dongle - basically a USB flash drive - this can be easily damaged or lost. So I set out to find a way to clone the USB security and have wrote up a how to in case anyone needed to make a backup. As most will know some of the ICOM emulator comes with an USB flash drive dongle as copyright protection. Whilst you can do an image snapshot of the ICOM VM when the emulator is running and just revert back to it without needing the dongle plugged in, there's always that fear in the back of your mind that you might lose that USB Dongle or that it might break., rendering the emulator useless. Especially so if the Vendor that sold you the emulator isn't very helpful at all. So I spent a little time finding a way to create a clone or duplicate of the dongle - and thought I would share the know how here. Basically the security is two tier based. The ICOM emulator checks for the "Volume Serial Number" (easily changed with software) and the Hardware Serial number (much harder as it requires flashing the USB chip), both of which must match the security check built into the ICOM emulator before it will start up and do the "rollback". Here's how you duplicate the USB dongle> I will not provide the software required, just a general knowledge of how to do this - as each USB dongle is different and has a different chip set, YOU WILL NEED to find the correct USB factory flash tool to do the necessary cloning. Mine was based on the SMI chip set SM3257AA First use a tool called ChipGenius and note the information in red below: The serial number shown is the Hardware Serial Number - this is the key component looked at by the ICOM emulator security check. WRITE THIS DOWN as you will need to flash your back up USB flash drive with this exact same serial number. The Chip Part number is VERY important, as it dictates which factory tool you need to find and download to do the flashing of the Hardware serial number. Next use an USB Image Tool like below that will duplicate the Volume Serial codes into your backup USB flash drive: Use Device Mode and create a back up image of the security dongle. Now plug in your spare USB flash drive and do a restore from the image created: Next check that the Volume serial code has been replicated between both flash drive: Now to the harder bit. Use the correct factory flash tool from the correct hardware "chip set manufacturer" and for the correct "chip part number" Run the software and press F5 to scan the USB. As you can see in red the Hardware serial number and the IC part number - save this as a copy just in case you screw up - so you can flash the drive back to factory. Next go to settings: There's usually a passcode to get into the program - this is usually either 123 or 320 This will bring up this next screen: Load the default.ini file Circled in red are the parts you need to change to match the Hardware Serial in the original USB Dongle. After the changes: Click "OK" to go back to the flash screen - Click the Start (Space Key) to start flashing the changes into the back up USB flash drive. Let the program do its thing and you should get a big [OK] come up to show that the process was successful and complete Click "Scan USB" again to check that the USB flash drive has indeed been flashed with the new Hardware serial number: And there you have it - a backup cloned USB Dongle that is exactly like the one you were supplied with. Some notes: 1. Double check that you have used the correct factory tool to do the flashing - you can render your USB drive completely useless if you don't. 2. Double check the Chip Part number!!! MSI chips are the easiest to work with and the tools more intuitive. 3. Avoid Phison chip sets I've damaged two USB drives trying to burn new hardware serial numbers into them - the factory tools for the Phison chip sets are just harder to crack for some reason. Good luck.

That is rare!! I know a guy in WA with one of the four race versions of one of those, Matter cage and all, very cool cars and basically a racecar in road trim, built and designed for racing and nothing else. Rarer still is the E36 M3 GTR road car, just two of those in existence.

If it's been deregistered, doesn't it require re-compliance to be registered again? If so they'd have checked if the car has had physical repair and if so the compliance people would have ordered a repair report. Can't recall how long it needs to be deregistered for before it goes through compliance again however ... But yeah, if it was anything serious and the parts were ordered through BMW then they'll have a record of what was ordered/repaired. Sounds to me like it's quite legit though. Loads of people let regos lapse simply because they don't use the car.

This ... And I'd use it as a daily driver. Would need to sell a kidney or two for one though

Could be a simple key initialisation issue ... try this first: Might also just be a dead key, as the battery do wear out in these and technically you can't change them out (although realistically you could, but you'd have to heat the plastic up first to open them up and change the battery inside and then glue the key back together)

That's amazing you could just rock up and take photos around a current movie set !!

Very nice Ray ... I must swing by to take a look at it in person !!

If there's a will there's a way. If they can get in the car, pop the bonnet and switch out the ECU and the EWS and armed with their own laptop with the correct software and pre-coded keys they can take anything. Below is a news video from Taiwan (sorry it's in Mandarine), but it took the theives just under 1 minute to take an E92 M3 in Taiwan ... and the news article states it wasn't the only one taken recently, basically quite a few have been stolen in the same way. http://www.appledaily.com.tw/appledaily/ar...84/applesearch/ Moral of the story, if they really want it, they can take it. E39 is still EWSII I think, so rather weak. And I've been told by very respectable resources that you can recode the ECU to actually not need the EWS to talk to it and just start the car and by pass everything - (up to EWSIII apparantly) - so yeah, it's a know how thing.

Purchased this phone in May brand new, it had a defect in the screen so was replaced under Apple Warranty just before June 2012 (actually this is the second replacement unit as the first replacement unit given to me, which I had for less than 2 hours, had a dent in the frame). This phone has only been used for just under a month so it is in BRAND NEW CONDITION - not a mark or scratch on it. Has had a screen protector on it front and rear (these have been taken off to check the condition of the phone) and always sat in an INCIPIO tough case from day one. It is indiscernible from a brand new phone. Apple warranty till 3rd May 2013 as seen in the screen shot below (this is because it carries on the warranty from the original activation of the original phone). Comes with original box, brand new unused chargers, headphones, USB cables, ect (as you would get if you were buying a new phone). Phone is NZ NEW - so will work on all networks (micro sim card for Apple) ONLY SELLING as I needed more storage, so have upgraded to a 64G phone. $850 021 281 0155

SOLD Bought this off trademe last month, then ended up buying a black one instead as I didn't like the white. Never opened, still in plastic wrap. Checked legitimacy before purchase, so just open and activate and should have 12 months warranty. Paid $, so rather not lose any money on it. Surplus to requirement. 021 281 0155

The aftersales service is by in large very very good ... but their post sale retention of customers is very very poor in my opinion. Let me give you an example - one that I've personally experienced. You would think that as an owner of no less than 4 x brand new M cars in the last 10 years that they would consider someone like myself to be fitting within the customer profile of somebody that might eventually buy another M car - yet I have NEVER EVER been invited to an M launch event ... NEVER. And this is despite a personal letter to a Mr Gilbert one year just after the E92 M3 launch to voice my disappointment at treatments of potential customers (at the time the wife was working for BMW, so I thought as a nice gesture that they should know about their own shortfallings - I got sent a magazine as make up .. LOL). Come the new M5 ... again nothing. So I do what a normal customer would do ... I am walking away from the brand. Love the guys that do servicing though - great bunch of people and real enthusiasts about looking after special cars. Also I am fairly sure BMW is no longer the top selling Premium brand ... I believe Audi has been for the last few years.

Graham, I agree with you that Pukekohe has improved vastly over the years and I still rate it as a very rewarding and fun track to drive on (it used to be hell bumpy pre 2008) - more fun than Hampton Downs for me personally. It must be the camera angle on Jack's car that's making me think he's taking on a huge amount of curbs than necessary. Those are quite big curbs and I've seen tyres get cut quite badly from taking too much curb lap after lap (I've done it personally in the past). I agree it is the faster line, and most especially if you run 3 way or 4 way shocks where high speed bump can be independently backed off to suit, otherwise you tend to just bounce right over them.
-
Nice lap - as a constructive feedback (nothing negative), there's room for improvement in terms of some of your lines - also don't take so much curb through the esses. I've always used these two videos below as reference for lines around Pukekohe, driven by some of the best drivers around: Craig Baird: David Reynolds: I am by no means perfect, but as a comparison of a few laps I did last year (about ten months ago I think on 10 years old tyres and no wheel alignment + passenger) http://vimeo.com/25947284

READ BELOW CAREFULLY!!! Standard tyre found on the M3 CSL These came off my CSL as I have purchase new tyres for the car. I don't have the space to store these and I don't believe they deserve any money, so they are free to anyone that wants the whole lot!! YOU MUST TAKE THE WHOLE LOT!! 7 x Michelin Pilot Sport Cups in various conditions (almost all still have about 2.5 ~ 3mm tread - Brand new they are only 4.75mm in full tread) - GOOD FOR SKIDS ONLY!!! All of these tyres are manufactured in 2002 or 2003 - meaning they are 10 years old!! Tyres over the age of 6 years old have a greater risk of delamination - so I have opted to remove these and not use them. They are however great if you want to do skids and burn outs. DO NOT USE THEM FOR THE ROAD OR TRACK DRIVING - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Sizes: Fronts 235/35/19 (three available - one delaminated and is in the bin) Rears 265/30/19 (four available and most still with good treads). Pick up in East Auckland. Note 5 immediately available - three are still on the rim and will be taken off next week. Call or text 021 281 0155. Photos of some of the tyres (5 of them)

Not sure if this belongs in this forum ... but I think it sort of deserves it : ) http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=662836

No, Brabham - view's not bad for turns one and two. We spoke to a few from Jones' stand and they said it was about the same as the Brabham in terms of view (they couldn't see the main straight either as it was blocked by the trees). The best stand is the one at the end of the chicane next to the sand pit - this is called the Chicane Stand and here you see the mainstraight, turns 1 and 2.

What a fantastic weekend!!!! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1...mp;l=aabe79891b Here are all the photos I took (was way too busy watching all the action that I barely took any photos LOL). Few things from my track side observation (at turns one and two) and overall weekend experience: 1. Redbull is still cold blowing the diffuser and they are the ONLY team doing it - to me blatantly flouting the rules. Sure they weren't blowing it like they were last year but it was still very obvious that they are doing it on their car. I have videos that show this. 2. The noise from one F1 car is louder than a whole bunch of V8 supercars flying past (with McLaren being the loudest out of them all, followed closely by the Redbull) ... it was sensational!! There are other noises you simply don't pick up on TV - very surprising. 3. The really good drivers stood out from the good drivers - they really do going through turns 1 and 2 for me. 4. So much hate for Michael Schumacher from long time fans at the track, was a bit surprising for me - wasn't expecting this. 5. Italian and Spanish fans are crazy. 6. Alonso fans are crazy (shouting his name and waving the Ferrari flag lap after lap without stopping !!! Dedication!!) 7. Australians appears to like Ricciardo much more than Webber (at least according to the security personnels that escort the drivers - yes I got chatting with a few of them haha). 8. Almost everyone loves Vettle and all the security guys rate him really highly as a person and as a driver taking out time for the fans. 9. Very cool to know that a few MP4-12C will appear on NZ shores very shortly : )
