Yes am aware and probably going to do just rebuild it myself ... I was simply thinking of downtime parts listed in description https://youtu.be/13O6jgm6xag or if you can find a Rover 75 with the 2.0CDT engine or Land Rover Freelander 2.0Td4 engine it shares the same alternator as the mighty M3 lol!

I’ve been investigating this personally as mine’s got a bearing issue on it and in my opinion it makes more sense to get a new unit from the States. The factory unit is made by Valeo and they are on special at ecstuning at the moment for usd$189. Shipping is expensive from ecs however ($130+) but in reality true shipping cost should be about us$89 with usps standard express box. - if you use someone else with an account with the likes of ups ect it’ll be cheaper again still, I actually think if you pack it tightly it might be cheaper still or if you ocean it with kiwishipping. There is a catch however, through my investigation Valeo makes 3 tiers of this unit and it seems one is a remanufacture, one is OE (ie BMW) and one is Valeo branded. Without seeing all the units side by side it is very hard to judge if they are exactly the same. My opinion however is alternators are not complicated units and they are all much the sameness really - so any good branded replacement will be just as good as the original unit - ie anything from Bosch, Valeo, Lucas or Denso is a good alternative if you can find them cheap and only slightly more expensive than a rebuild (which probably uses Made in China internals)

You need better tools!!! I’ve never had to drop the bumper to drop that muffler and I’ve done it more times than I care to count. You don’t even need to remove the diffuser. Easily done by one person with all four limbs supporting the bloody thing and a good jack : )

I enjoy being a grumpy old man, I thrive on it lol! Everyone’s entitled to a general value opinion, but how many are actually in the market for one? Or can afford the asking price. Cars like this will yoyo in value depending on what’s out there and the demand for it - Heck I think the person that paid $100million for that Classic Ferrari is crazy, but I am not even in the same league as those bidding on that Ferrari (not even close) so who am I to say it was overpriced or not? Reality is you can’t build a 1:1 replica CSL for the price of buying one now days assuming you can source every single part. Sure you can build a replica using replica parts for cheaper and get the same thrill so there’s always that route. But it’s not the same - different strokes for different folks.

Everytime one of these comes up for sale the amount of crap comment that gets generated blows my mind. I am going to bury mine with me when I die just so I don’t have to deal with these type of comments ???

I think given there are so many replicas now available it probably wasn’t worth the effort! Buy the latest Karbonious airbox - well priced and very very well constructed. You don’t want to pay for a genuine airbox !!! They are astronomical to buy nowdays ... even beat up used ones!

Nope .... didn’t actually get any offers to replicate it from anyone.

Ground clearance height issues below 100mm LVTA??
M3_Power replied to BrentNZ's topic in Brakes, Suspension & Steering
Did you read the new rules at all (been around since 2016) about suspension modifications? I’ve just had my car certified and I can tell you the new rules are lot more comprehensive and has already done away with the 100mm clearance requirement. (i’ve had no less than 5 cars lvvt certified since 1997) and the rules have changed significantly since back then. It is now about having sufficient suspension travel - the gist of it requires at least 40mm travel or at least 1/3 of original non modified suspension travel, amongst other things. When it lands on the bump stop it cannot contact any part of the vehicle body or shield ect. So with 60mm clearance I am willing to wager you will fail the cert period. There’s also extensive rules now about alignment and camber and castor angles - an alignment read out has to be provided to the certifier with suspension modifications - at least in my case. The car is scrutinised right down to the nuts and bolts used and suspension arm angle and binding, steering arm angle ect. For sump clearance - dry sump it : ) -
You can legally remove any airbags more than 12 years old if I recall correctly. Needs a cert and warning sticker on the airbag cover however.

^ which usually is a good sign that they are too busy to care about some website ... as long as it has a number and address the business keeps rolling in. Am going to need this myself soon also on suspension arms ect ...

I blame EU for putting the environment above colour consistency for paint : P i think if you look up A08, silver grey there’s something like 12 different variants for it from Glasurit, all in the name of environment : )

I’ve never tried 144, but other guys have tried WA55 and A55 with slight modifications with good results. The original original colour for the csl wheels that came with the car is the one AlexK mentioned (as many UK csl can attest to), there is speculation that later production wheels from BBS were painted with A55 or a variation of it. I actually should try and confirm this as I have a set of never used later production csl rims (2015) that from memory did look slightly different to the original set in terms of colour. I can go on about these wheels but suffice to say there’s a few variations of them out there from BMW and BBS independently.

maybe I should clarify, the code doesn’t appear to have a cross reference to another generic colour code from other paint suppliers. It also doesn’t have a published formula. anyways, the actual colour is discussed here in this thread in detail in Greek, it was confirmed by people in Munich that worked on the CSL originally - it is not WA55 or A55 as many seem to think (supposedly BBS source) The original paint is Italian made by Lechler as discussed by Alexk in this thread below http://www.bmwfans.gr/forum/showthread.php?t=15847 there is also apparently a good match from ppg for this colour which was used for the MV Augusta Wheel which is PPG 35204189
-
It’s not a coded paint otherwise I’d give it to him. Also it has a dark coloured undercoat which I don’t actually have. But you can get away with spraying just the colour.
-
I Have a litre of the actual paint for this wheel ... it’s $700+ per litre. So my recommendation is to just mix it yourself as it’s quite a special paint.
