You're all goats, $200 is way too much!

Oh yip. Its not wax valve, its thermostat operated. Its got a coolant hose wot runs off the block, through the icv unit and back out the other side to the block. Also a air hose wot gathers air from in front of the throttle and another hose wot puts air round behind the throttle. When cold the two air hoses are joined by the unit as the valve inside is open. As the water going through heats up the thermostat inside the unit acts on a spring wot closes the valve and stops the air coming through. If you suspect its at fault take it out and boil it and watch for smooth valve opening and closing action. But I don't see how a faulty one could cause an erratic idle. I can see how it could cause a high or low idle... :S

Being an early motor, it could be the water thermostat type, in which case it is buried deep under the inlet manifold and it looks like this Or it could be the electric type, in which case it connects to the intake elbow, there are a few different variations on the elec type. Edit - I should ad that I'm a dipshit so don't start pulling things to bits or making assumptions on my account! Call someone who is properly experienced first.

My b23 didn't hunt at idle when my downpipe to exhaust wasn't sealed, also my b25 idled good with no exhaust, so my guess would be you need to look somewhere else Paul. If you wan't to know if you have an intake air leak, get some ether (start ya bastard is mostly ether) and spray it around the intake area, if the revs rise you know you have a leak. ICV?

Yea did the removing bit a couple of weeks ago with no reading or anything, I'd say its pretty straightforward. Unplug all the sensors you can see. Remove the ground straps (there is one on the passenger side of the sump and sometimes one somewhere else iirc). Drain all the coolant from the block by removing the plug under the exhaust manifold Disconnect driveshaft from gearbox Disconnect clutch fluid line from slave cyl if its manual Disconnect reverse light wires Disconnect shifter Unbolt gearbox crossmember Remove fan Disconnect fuel lines Disconnect all coolant hoses - dont forget the ones to the heater at the back of the motor. Disconnect throttle cable Unbolt exhaust etc? Two people is pretty much a must. Good luck.

I would love to tuck this away in my shed! Good luck Sam.

Re hard line: No, not off the top of my head but I will have a look this week and let you know. No worries.

Been back since January lol. No idea on the condition of the condensor sorry, its one of those setups with the blower below the heater controls behind one of those big funny grills. Thing is I'm pretty busy for the next 2 weeks so I'm not going to get a chance to take the rest of it out and get it sent until then is that ok? Alternatively, if you have someone in Auckland who owes you a favour they can come pull it out. You've really softened up Luke!

Yep I'm slowly stripping the AC out of a 325i. You can have whatever you want. One of the hard lines has been cut though in the engine bay.

Ray and Mike no have. I need one for Dudlee and one for the green garden ornament. Max 0273545576. Auckland.

Buying the gfbs before you have the car - a crucial step in becoming an "e30 owner". good work.

What does your e36 want it for? Clearly it belongs on my touring. watchlisted

Uncle Glenn just came around and checked it out, the master cylinder is maybe a bit sticky but otherwise he thinks its ok (Glennc an elaborate here). I'm going to keep driving it around locally till Monday then take it into Glenns workshop for another look over on the hoist. After Glenn left I went for a cheeky bewstski and sh*t it moves! Can't stop grinning! Oh and the clunk from the rear was just my exhaust rattlying around.

That didn't even sound that good lancelot, I think your going to have to bring it to the pub on thurs for us to hear properly

Seems cheap, wouldn't trust that feller though.

^Answers the first question. I put a new spigot bearing in. Spacer plate is fitted on the correct side of the flywheel, (starter wouldn't engage if it wasn't). Incorrectly machined flywheel is a possibility but a very very slim one as it was done by a reputed balancing specialist, as was the flywheel. Good point. I'm using the PP out of an early g240 (gearbox is a late g260). Realoem says the diameters are the same but the part numbers are different for early 320is with big plate shifters vs 88 325i which this box came out of.

Make sure the plug in the expansion tank is in properly.

Who is this turkey? I'm sure I recognise his trademe name.
