Friend is looking for a 2003-ish 5 series - advice please
kiwi535 replied to Sick Puppy's topic in General Discussion
5 series is a much much "nicer" car than a 3 seriesa maual e 39 is very very rare a manual e 60 would be even more...she must have a price range e 60 start at about 20 e 39 for half that Alan on here may wish to sell his e39 530 -
350 nm is the torque of my little 2.0 deisel( at 1750 rpm theoaretically but seast of the pants is more like 2000 or so
-
all e34 5 series wheels are around 20 m offset( as are e23 e24,e32 and prolly e28)

when i bought mine the cloth was pretty ratty.i went to an upholsterer and got it redone in leather. he did a fantastic job

contis and bridgestones are not available had to get a pair of Pirellis.I will make arrangements in advance next time.I may resort to normal tyres .The pirellis are more compliant than the bridgestones they replaced, they were very harsh riding and noisy on anything but the smoothest roads.
-
whilst i agree with what you say paying $398 for a tyre is ridiculous...its only a poxy 205/55 16 runflat for gods sake..
-
i now treasure the cap i bought at Bathurst....
-
they the std seats.M sport e39 tend to have "sports" seats and some higher spec models might have comfort seats.Within those boundaries there are further options avalable too.ie sports seats may or may not have armrests and lumbar support or memory.

is your 320 chipped?made quite a difference to the 120d,and that is with a 80% map
-
look at my post above....ruc is 230 for 500 ks or there abouts you do your own sums. The service intervals on my diesel is the same as my old 535.What i call around town is not stop start stop start.my i20 is manual which are supposed to be more economical than the autos.6th is very tall 110 is about 1700 rpm
-
the performance of modern diesels means you have a little bit of cake and eat it too......
-
no because the idea of ruc is that there are many vehicles that use deisel that do not run on the roads.also a mechanism for charging vehicles by weight.I would love to hear the arguments as to why a 120d costs 417 to register and a 120i about 250
-
it depends on the individual. My 120d has a 50 litre tank, which i regularly put up to 45 litres.round town i get over 700 ks to a fill,on the open road i will get 900 or so.Ruc is about 5c a km ,the rego was 417.My service intervals are about 15000k.It aint no m3 or m5 but the shove in the back you get is very satisfying. Its got pin point steering and braking. It has been chipped which makes it nicer at lower revs and gives it a little more rev a bility. It has MORE torque than my old 535 and uses HALF the fuel The range per tank and the torque make it worth while for me.It was fun at Taupo too. The six speed is a nice little box. It has its downsides.I hate the smell of diesel, you are always aware you a driving a diesel, you can get caught out on very slow corners (you sometimes need first or need to wait while it comes back on boost),and you need to stay on the throttle if you want instant response.
-
totally agree...modern diesels are fast and torquey but they just dont have the rev range or the ulimate horsepower of a modern petrol and the m3 has a very impressive rev range
-
yes a mate who drives lots of cars describes 123d as a rocketship.....my little 120d chipped is very impressive in the 2-4.5 k rpm band and with six gears thats quite a speed spread....drive the m3 tho....
-
drive them...the m3 has a very nice soundtrack!
-
the link doesnt work
-
skoda....cheap VW,they are available in dct or manual
-
i bet on the open road it would be even better
-
here is how i look at it...if you fix yours you know exactly what you have got....any second hand engine is partly unknown.Any M30 engine will eventually blow the head gasket becuase of diff movement between the iron block and alloy head.Even the most religiously maintained cars will blow the head gasket. If you do yours now with gaskets and new bolts it will be done and known.Even the newest M30 does have a dizzy and rotor.

the first thing you must do is drive a couple, but be hard hearted about it,do not buy yet.Once you have driven a couple at least you have a baseline from which to work and will begin to see what the differences in the options are and what optios you desire. This is where a BMW is different to most other makes, there can be a BIG difference between two identical looking cars

a few years ago i had a pallet delivered via roadstar( ithink) it was about 90 bucks. The seller put them on a pallet and wrapped in shrinkwrap

unless its really pricey i prefer to support local, cos they the ones we need if we get in a real jam
