Yes, With out the preloaded the center the driveshaft has less 'support' when going over bumps underload. Its more a problem when the hanger bearing rubber starts to get old. Sam G: If this is the second time you've had the problem I would get the drive shaft spun up on a balancing manchine. Mind you, you can feel an unbalanced drive shaft a mile off.

The hanger bearing needs to be preloaded when you reinstall it. Any mechanic trained would do this. Otherwise you may have an unbalanced driveshaft. Take it to a driveshaft balancing specialist to check.

Some cars really shouldn't be allowed on a race track period. Theyre just not made for it. Ive driven one of those things open road along with those shitty GM / holden things. Theyre actually pretty dangerous .. the body roll is hideous. I totally get why people drive these sorts of things @ 80 open road.

Yeap no airbox etc just the standard motor well maintained had done about 80,000ks at the time (didnt even have the SS exhaust on at the time). Three times with three separate e36 m3 b30's. One of those times was with Aaron Harris in his then standard 3.0 around taupo in road car trim. My car would pull off the start, then the m3's would catchup till they had to change gear and ran out top end puff, this is where the 330 would pull it back. The m54 has more bottom end but dies around 6krpm The m3 has another 2krpm on top of the m54 of that just over half of that is useful. Alot of people now have pretty tired m54's in their 330i that I would say 90% of them dont have a working VANOS due to seals being all dried up. Double Vanos is pretty sensitive to it and its the m54's trumph card. When it doesnt work properly its like driving a Lexus or Nissan. Around the 330 vs 328 debate. The 330 comes with an overhaulled drive train in general such as bigger brakes, larger halfshafts etc and a lot of interior upgrades like heated mirrors etc.

Kind of beg to differ. An M54 has a lot more torque down low due to a more advanced VANOS system. Peak horse power difference dont really mean a hell of a lot. Stock cars, well maintained (VANOS seals etc) is still a night and day distance. Put it this way, my old 330i would be neck and neck to a e36 s50b30 m3. 330 had 232bhp and a e36 m3 286bhp. Another example of peak horse power figures that dont mean lots.
