  1. Want to find out if I'm doing this all wrong or not. When bench testing a starter motor is it necessary to include the unloader relay post in the jumper wiring? Currently have +12v from battery to +12v on starter, -ve battery to starter body, and jumpering from starter switch post to +12v on starter motor. Problem is, the motor spins but its not driving the cog forward to engage the ring gear. Have tried two motors now with same result. What am I missing?
  2. Hmmm, seems to be a long shot but certainly worth investigating. From the threads I've found from the likes of Bimmerforums, et al, diaphragm failure in the CCV is another source of vacuum leaks. In saying that, my car isn't displaying the mayo under the oil cap, nor does it make a sucking sound when cap is removed while running. I'm at the stage where I'm willing to take it to a pro to diagnose the problem as I'm obviously missing something here. Would a local non-BMW specialist be able to accurately spot whats happening? My preference is to take it to Glenn, but I'm presently unable to take any time off from work during the week.
  3. Are they genuine or aftermarket?
  4. Mmmmm, plumbing!! How did the large case -> medium case swap go man?
  5. Mmmmm, the 330i and the 328i look to be better choices for my dollar. Aftermarket wheels, adjustable suspension and aftermarket head unit throw up the warning flags for me. The 330i looks to be the pick of the bunch, even though it has beige leather Appears to be a higher specced car, looks like the m-sport seats too. Would love to know what the sticker on the vanos cover says. We've got a B30 powered 5er as the family car, moves quite well for a 2 tonne wagon - reckon the 3er would go even better! Gut feeling counts for a lot when buying used, would definitely be giving Bellars a call to hear what they have to say! Good luck!
  6. Negative on the EML lamp, only shows the yellow engine lamp. INPA only shows the fault codes for O2 sensors, deviation rich. Would have thought a fault like that would log a code of its own? Again, I'm certainly no expert but if this was happening wouldn't the engine be hesitating or feel down on power?
  7. So it's still showing the dreaded engine light, ran INPA on Monday and still showing 227 & 228 Sprayed a heap of carb cleaner around while the engine idled, no flaring in the revs To my untrained ear I can't hear any hissing, though the engine does make quite a sucking sound when running, it sounds the same to me as my old B25 in the E36. Access is nearly impossible under the intake manifold so I can't say for sure that the CCV isn't the source of the problem here. So far I've replaced hoses 2 & 4, replaced the bung that goes in place of hose 6. Replaced bungs 15 & 17, both intake boots, swapped MAF, inspected #10 for any cracks, inspected DISA valve & reinstalled with extra sealant to be safe, and torn out what little hair I have. All that's left now is a new manifold gasket, new CCV & hoses #7 & 3 and o-rings for injectors and secondary fuel rail. And pre-cat O2 sensors, though they look like a real pain to get at. If advice points towards the CCV being the problem I'm going to do the Vanos seals & rocker gasket at the same time. Might look to hit the secondary air rail and injector o-ring is I have to pull the manifold. Fuel economy has been steady at 10.8 - 11.2 l/100km, so the fuel overcompensation must be bugger all, otherwise I'd be anticipating figures north of 13 l/100. Apologies for whining on abut the same old thing, but this is starting to drive me to despair. And drinking.
  8. That sort of advice is what makes this forum worth coming back to. Nice one Glenn
  9. Call Gavin at EuroItalian Parts. In Auckland but he might be able to help out
  10. Anyone got an ADS interface to get GT1 / INPA running on a 20 pin E36?
  11. Can help with the radio tuner. Pm if interested
  12. Does yours have the 16:9 widescreen? If so, I may be able to help
  13. It's a pity you're not in Auckland, I can highly recommend Wallace Heron engineers in Pukekohe for tools. Extensive range of Koken and King Tony kit, will bring in Stahlwille on request, no obligation to buy either. The shop is stocked by former tradesmen so they know what they're on about. Avoid Bahco, my experience with a 1/4 & 1/2 inch set was less than satisfactory. 6 point sockets have been ok, but the 1/4 inch ratchet blew its gear after a couple months, both ratchets seemed to have pretty coarse gears compared to my koken replacements
  14. We need more cars like this in NZ! Bring it over man, even if you end up selling it I'd be fairly confident you'll make back the cost of importing it. Mmmmmm, Alpina

    M50 - M52

Thanks mate, now you mention it I recall asking you something similar last time I saw ya. Will be interesting to see if the DME will cope with the intake cam locked at full advance. Research time!
  16. Might be worth checking the charcoal canister (if the E46 uses them) for any cracks too. Probably a long shot but worth a look
  17. Oh, thank god for that! Was making me feel sad at a cellular level! Looks like it's in great shape, mind if I ask what it cost you?
  18. 2JZ into an E9? Is this a wind up????

    M50 - M52

Can anyone tell me the differences between an M50B25TU engine loom and the M52B28? My old cast iron donk is starting to really show its age (revs hunting when coasting to a stop while engine cold, large intermittent flat spot in power band between 2900-3800rpm) which I suspect are signs of a failing or failed vanos. Thing is, I really CBF ordering the replacement seals when I know that I'll be pulling the engine out at some point in the future to be replaced by the B30 project I've got in the shed. (Lack of time and trying to find the $1000 or so to get it dyno tuned are the main holdups) Which lead me to wonder if the B25TU loom will be compatible with a B28. Yeah, I know rebuliding the vanos is far easier than an engine swap, but the 30 ft/lb torque the B28 has over the B25 is pretty attractive too. A parallel thought is will the standard DME freak out if I just lock the intake cam at full advance? Just bouncing a few thoughts around, all of varying complexity, practicality and expense, would be cool to get some input from folks that know more about this stuff than I. Ta
  20. Ha! Looks like the owner has one hell of a sense of humour!!
  21. I'll take them if they're still available. Have a funny feeling I'll be doing the job sooner than later
  22. Looks like he's sunk a few dollars into that! All sorts of cool!!
  23. Interesting..... I have a 433mHz RF system that came from an NZ new 5er I parted this year. Only have 1 key but do have everything else........... tempting!
  24. Further proof I have much to learn! Good to know though
