Hmm jacked her up today to see why I was getting a wee knock in the back, turns out some dumb f%^k has cut the rear springs. I hate cut springs

Take the belt off....

Wasted spark can offer some advantages. Yet our drag car only runs a set of points and a cordia coil, we have no trouble making power You are right though, one advantage of wasted spark is how smooth it can be in the upper rev range. I do like the megasquirt system though

Yep, they were. Find a pic of the dash/center console and you will see diff lock switch but they are full time 4wd

I think it's a lie with the tyre marks, I know a guy with a quattro and his only has diff locks. very very very sexy cars though, I would even own a 5egt or 5sgt just for the noise

This is the e12 project I have done a few of the dents in my spare time. Still trying to decide what colour to do her. I just scored another motor and box for her. I have had to make two patches, one on the right passenger door and one under the bonnet. Apart from that there was sweet f.a rust The gearbox is shagged, I would think input shaft bearings are rooted

How the hell do you get all this info?Cheers

I'm very impressed at how well your e30 copes with being thrown around that hard, very good work with the suspension. No judgement on the driving dude, would like to see some track vids though

BMW Model and Engine Code Designations
dirtydoogle replied to greenday-rulz21's topic in Maintenance
The e12 was 72 onwards and the m10 was also available in 1.6 and 1.5 etc....but technically had different engine codes. 1.5 L (1499 cc/91 in³) = M115 1.6 L (1573 cc/95 in³) = M116 in the 1600 and 1600-2 [or 1602] and m41 in the 75ish 316. M98 after 81 in the 316. 1.8 L (1766 cc/107 in³)= The real m10....e21 318i and 77 518i. 1.8 L (1773 cc/108 in³) = M118 in the 63-74 1800 and early e12 518 2.0 L (1990 cc/121 in³) = m17 in the 72-late 76 e12, had different head to the e21 and high comp pistons. M10B18 we all know that one. (1990 cc/121 in3) = m43/1 in 73 e21 320 (1990 cc/121 in3) = m64 75 520i and 75 320i m31 from the 2002 turbo (1990 cc/121 in3) M15 From the 72-74 2002tii That should about cover it.... -
Haha Yes, I could. There is two Kiwi statues here, one is in somebody's back yard though. Another piccy of the old girl outside the workshop where I discovered the LSD, kinda had a bit of slideways pn the grass so jacked her up and yup, lsd Excuse the picture quality, cellphone piccy

Sooo, who knows where I can look to get a new thrust bearing for the e12? She's got the good ole rumble going on.... Also, a bottom end bearing kit and rings. I know the E12 has a different head [hemi with 46mm intake valves] to the e21 m10 and 2002 motors, it also has diff pistons [dome top] And I need a left hand front indicator lens [otherwise I will have to make one] If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

I remember them well, a mate had one and the oil feed to the turbo was too small. But christ was it a giggle in the gravel!

It's these select few idiots who ruin it for all of us.

We don't just drive predominantly drag cars, I was referring to vehicles with helical cut gears. And also pointing out it's slower. Try the times, it's slower and worse for the gears. I bet the racers in the E30 series do not "load" the box up, simple fact of the matter is, once a gear is selected the gears are meshed. Done.

Hope this works. Excuse the crappy cell phone Will post up a pic of the choice panel beating I did

We have done it before as I said and know what works best and is better for it But, each to their own, I have never had a problem with any of my vehicles by doing it how I do and it's been faster down the strip, so that would mean faster off the lights, the gears are helical cut so they will die when you load it up in such a manner faster than being nice, rapeing the car will obviously destroy things... Helical gears aren't very strong so stressing the teeth against each other isn't a good thing, a smooth take up is faster and far more delicate. I work with a guy who has been doing these things since th early 70s. If loading it up was better for the car or faster he would do it. So would all the others. But they still can't turn corners

I think I just had an adult moment on the keyboard, I looooove the old gta...

Our drag car has around the same technology as my e12....Well our drag car uses next to no technology The reason the 4wd gear boxes sh*t out is the sudden take up from d*ck wits dumping the clutch, don't dump the clutch in a 4wd unless you have it on grass....take a mitsi cm5a gsr for example, the fastest way down the strip is launching from 2700rpm. With an e30, easing the power on slower and using the brilliant throttle control I wish I had and it will be faster and last longer, dumping the clutch breaks any car, launching properly means there is no sudden take up on you drive line meaning your e30 doesn't go pop, loading up is unnecessary stress in any vehicle, it stresses your gears, engine and diff. It's not hard to build revs up to a certain amount and have consistent launches Our drag car has mechanical injection like a ww2 air craft did and a set of points like anything 50 years old did, running through the recommended replacement coil for a misti cordia, it's only a 380ish cube small block with a c6 3speed auto, no real technology. I prefer corners too, I just also like watching 1800hp take off and having the experience of working on such a cool machine. I'd rather ride a bike though. You got the melting money part right...but 7 sec quarters aren't cheap
