So i lose power adding m3 cams(unless I get a tune?)
-
I am having the friend drop the cams back off next week, I had some interest from another member here, I decided to give them a try and see if me and another member / neighbor here could install them ourselves and time them, I guess its not that hard and the M50 and M52 should use similar / same toold to lock/timing? I plan on selling my car in 2 years max, Leaving the country by then. so will probably not get a tune if not needed otherwise if the price if right I will ring up gavin to do it and then and call it a day. @Ron & Jo, how much do you gain from adding m3 cams? I have understood that US figures of dynos are inflated. I guess you get back some of the torque loss from the m50 manifold as well? I hope to be close to 190-200rwhp after a tune. too optimistic?

they are in mt. roskill, auckland now. $400 is way too low. I am asking $600. just make me an offer near what I am asking and go pick them up today, parts that you cant use is expensive, So I need to get rid of them and get back some of my money. besides you would pay more then twice that for shrik cams + postage + customs fees. otherwise I will see if anybody is around that could help me install them, its the timing etc that bothers me. Maybe allan can help since hes done his Vanos. dont have many whangarei bmw guys here else I would had installed them myself with a helping hand since I got zero experience with installing cams.

I had some M3 (M52B30) american motor cams, I cant do timing or ever did anything like this and heard they also need a tune so was thinking of selling them off, haven't found anybody yet (was asking $600, pickup @ auckland, but the guy I thought wanted them, our deal fell short). I am doing the M50 manifold swap, I am convinced, however now wondering if I should try and do the cams swap myself? I dont have any special tools to lock anything and swap it out, so wanted to rather sell it off.

Such a beautiful car. I wish to buy one next. and at 2.5 K. Wow, that is a steal. Why weren't these around when I was looking for another car? Maybe I will buy it off you in a few years when you are bored of it. Unless you plan on letting that kid have it when he gets his license of course

Sucks if no body else wants them, I mean it doesn't look bad does it? i thought they looked pretty nice, I mean its not ricer or anything and would look like a pretty decent modification when its done. People add front lips to your bumper so why not something on the rear? There are a few other designs too. make me some offers??

Everything is done, now just waiting for the weather to get better and a small part to come after easter from Alex, then my m50 manifold conversion will be done, oil change will also be complete and will be sending the tool back to M3AN who has been more then generous and patient. (still sitting on top of my desk )

anybody else interested in my diffuser add on? its really easy to bolt on, takes 10 mins to do(taking it off and back on, drilling 6 holes). so who else would buy them and how much would you pay for a set? I will ship all over nz too
-
Hi, here's some work in progress/prototypes that me and a few guys were working on, I asked a few members here but never saw any interest so I am posting it here. They are made of ABS Plastic, final product will be much thicker and OEM looking and will bolt right on to your rear bumper (mtec for now) . Just thought I would post a few pictures here, how much would you be willing to pay for a set? I also have some lips in progress but will post pics when they are done. sorry, about the pictures, I have tried to make them look as nice as I can. (phone camera but you still get a good idea)

more info needed. this responds better on jatco/auto boxes doesn't it? i see you have an similar auto like me.
-
This whole thing is a conspiracy isn't it? so that noob guys like me cant have a faster car. isn't it? you get paid by bmw to say these things. you are all in on it! OMG. okay okay, kidding. i really appreciate your replies, its obviously A. I know about the thing about this being worthy for track guys who are always over 4k. but i was hoping this would be a good add on if it drives normally in the DD/city roads, and when i want the power, want a rush or go around twists and mountains or the motor way I can floor it and the extra power is there kinda thing. I wish I could keep the cars current power curve and just do some small modification that would give me more go when i floored it. maybe if i added m3 headers and deleted my clutch fan it would make up for the torque loss at the low end? seriously the m50 hype got to me and I wanted best of both worlds but that seems like an very far fetched wish at best.
-
ok fine, fine i will put it back on edit: stock to stock when i floor it my car would be faster vs a 328i car with m50 manifold?
-
I agree with you on the note that the M50 is a dog, it felt slugish compared to my 318is when I test drove one. now after reading what you had to say now I want to use the m52 manifold again, but I already took it all out. but honestly it seems the m50 supposedly loses some torque (10nm?) around the midrange, 3 - 4K. after that its pulling hard. A friend did it and hes also liking it, So I am going with the swap, to see how it goes, if the power is there at the low end for DD and there if I need it when I floor it at 4000-5000RPM then I am okay with a little torque loss for overall gains/faster car. In DD I dont see myself going over 2.5K -3K, I drive slow and gentle but sometimes around the mountains and on open roads or motorways I let it open and floor it, so I think it may be what may benefit for me. edit: ron, do you have an fuel pressure regulator clip for the m50 or whats its called that I am missing, I may buy it off you since my manifold didnt come with one (the thing in A of the picture)?
-
where can I get one? anybody got a spare vac line clip to fit A? my manifold doesn't have one and I cant do the swap till I get one. anybody got a spare m50 manifold laying around that would let me have the vac thing, will gladly pay you. yea i got a place to fit the B, it will go into the intake boot with some gasket maker or rubber silicon hopefully be okay.
-
could anyone tell me what is A used for? B is already plugged in with an electrical sensor connector which I guess I don't have to use, but I don't have anything in A and its a blank hole, what do I need to plug it with? I believe its a vac line or a sensor? as you can tell, i am doing the swap.

most of the work is almost done, I am waiting for the rain to end here in whangarei so that I can work out side again (garage is full car is parked in the lawn). The weather is such crap out here sometimes and going to the hospital many times a day is also an issue. sensors and things are in all connected. valve cover taken care of. just need to flush out the oil and prime/bleed the radiator coolant. Will see if I can get some more work done today. will be returning M3AN's code reader shortly after.

Whats the difference between the shorty headers and the m3 headers? how much can you get them for and does wayney or what ever his username was, still make them? are the m3 headers a straight swap? thanks
-
I heard it had something to do with the German Insurance, marketing as it would become too competitive with the US M3 and some other reasons that didn't let them make a car that out put more. I am not an engineer but I am sure they could had made a more free flow manifold with similar crescent design therefore keeping the air velocity. I found the vagina drawing on that thread, that thread is very good, many things to consider but I still would had liked to hear from those who did it to the 328i. I think Westy done it? Is the torque loss on the m52b28 really that noticeable? gotta love ron

northland dyno. i have crayons.
-
head over to head fi, also do you mind portable foldable on ear phones? I found them to be better alternative then in ear ones. I have heard some AKG ones and they are very nice. I wouldn't touch bose.
-
I have read a thread from 2007 and I think 2009 but we didn't come to a conclusion, that was many years ago so thought if things changed a bit after doing the mod it takes time to settle down I dont know I just wanted some more info. Google always tells me mixed things, I come across a forum where all the jokers are saying DO IT DO IT, and then another where they say DONT DONT, then another where they say, "maybe do it, ... yea sure, na, probably dont" this is giving me mixed feelings. this noob wants first hand thoughts from many of you who have done this, not just Ron but others too.
-
Hey Ron, since you have personal experience can you be bothered to tell me more, tell me everything, i understand the shape of the manifold itself is a big issue for the torque loss but how much is the loss really? some say 10nm, others say 30 - 40nm, then definitely not worth it then, because that would put it as equal level to an 325i. and when does it kick in? will sports shift over 3500rpm make up for it or is it always 4500 - 5000rpm+? my car has 3.64 lsd so stays at 3500rpm usually, and if the loss is not that bad and power is there when i floor it then i might just do it. I have heard good things from a few people, this from another "local" forum member/friend who shall not be named.. would appreciate others chipping in as well. those with the manifold, please leave your feedback/suggestions in regards for future reference aswell..

sorry to resurrect this topic from the dead but did alex do this mod or still thinking on it. What ever happened to the carbon fiber manifold Ron was working on? wonder if its any improvement or best of both worlds? i was thinking to do the m50 manifold on my 328i with k&n filter 3.64 lsd, jatco auto and cat delete exhaust, i got the kit and everything but still get mixed thoughts, if i put mine to sports mode and floor it, is the difference there after 3000rpm or on the motorway?? is the 10 torques you lose really that noticeable over the power gains? (if any) edit: did some more reading and seems the m50 thing i not favored as much as there is too much torque loss. alex did it with a kit (he has zf auto) but I am still debating if it would be an improvement for me (jatco auto). otherwise I probably might just sell off my kit + manifold.

thanks, I think I will try that Cherokee/Chief stuff you mention, I kinda like the shape of the drums so can anybody tell me how much does the engine take? google tells me that its 7.5L from us forums, I am not sure, so asking.

just learning my car sorry, googled but got various results, I wanted to be sure what nz m52 owners are using thanks
