Subaru Crossover Challenge - The Ramp:
-
For the money and if you want awd for winter sports you can't go past a legnum vr4. Gearboxes are the same as the equivalent Evo of the year which is quite strong and the smallish twin turbo system a 2.5l means a lot of torque. They can be had for very cheap just got to shop around for one which has been well maintained. The engine bay is awfully cramped. Lots of space for your gear too. They are fairly thirsty though and because of the fairly small turbos they will run out of puff at high rpm. Some of the later models had the ayc diff I think? Which was helpful for getting power down if its slippery but also came with some problems if you got the Evo 4 ayc. Looks like this discussion is mostly dead though!! In Subaru's defense the 3l flat 6 engine is great and the 2005+ models are great to drive. I hear their awd system is quite good for grip .. Of course the awd bias might not be the ideal if you want to go fast fast but they do very well if you want sensible traction. There was some comparison between various awd systems of that year awd wagons and the Subaru placed quite well amongst Euros etc. I think the test was how far up a increasing snowy slope you could get ..

Talk about greedy!! Haha!

Haha yeah I just used a random site online to work out the numbers which of course aren't too applicable in the real world .. Its more of an ideal world situation with 100% traction and full power down .. Etc Real world we have traction, power band, driver, and heaps of other variables. Either way .. With the standard acceleration times of the e31 csi , add almost double the horsepower and pull weight out and I don't think its too out of the realm of possibility to see the imaginary m8 well into the 4s area.

sure would be heavy, but given that the bog standard 850CSi can run 0-100kmh in 5.9 seconds and weighing in at near enough 2000kg is still pretty fast for such a heavy car. The 850CSi still had no B pillar - something which has been known to increase weight due to the need for additional chassis reinforcement. The M8 has a B pillar, stripped of all the heavy 'luxury items', carbon fibre panels, light weight seats etc etc. I think quite a bit of weight could have been saved. Even beyond that, the 850CSi still used the old SOHC V12 .. although most evidence points towards the fact that the M8 prototype engine is not the same V12 built for the Mclaren F1, it is thought to be the first iteration .. engine code is supposedly S70/1 while the F1 engine is the S70/2 and S70/3. BMW managed to push 630hp out of the F1 engine .. would think that the M8 wouldn't be too far off .. Rough estimate, if the car dropped maybe 200kg (1800kg), and power was at only 550hp at the engine .. you'd be looking at a car with a mid/high 3 sec 0-100kmh time!

Will a 18 button OBC help?
-
If you're talking about the replica then yes but the real prototype .. Well its not for sale so we don't know how much money it cost to build or how much it would cost to buy. It is however very interesting that BMW had the tech to create a car like that all those years ago. It would have well been in supercar territory if the numbers were accurate ..

so did the real prototype m8 make it down here? Or did someone build a replica??!?!

finally finished wiring my angel eyes to daytime running lights DRL and all the extras. There are no plug and play harnesses for the e36, so I built my own. Currently running mechanical relays (SPDT) however the next step is to move to electronic switches (MOSFET). So the configuration is as goes angel eyes hooked up to ACC as DRL. angel eyes also simultaneously hooked up to interior lights (lock on, lock off, fade on, fade off) angel eyes will run with main headlights when on separate in cabin switch to keep angel eyes on with no ACC and no key etc. (35w LEDs are low current, low drain, wont kill the battery). Thinking of having this circuit run off a smaller secondary battery .. we'll see .. maybe after the MOSFET conversion). Previously had this set up running using 3 SPDT relays, now only using a single relay and 4 diodes. Thinking of ways to further improve the efficiency and reduce parts. Also designing a PCB and enclosed box with labelled inputs/outputs to have an almost plug and play harness .. can set these up for whatever configuration you like .. no errors on my OBC. retail from USA for harnesses designed for e39 etc are $30-$60. so yay!

I had the DSSR and Evo3 SSK from UUC and it was an amazing difference compared to the old 17 year bushings and linkages!! Have you thought avout a braided clutch line? Some people have had great improvements from a seemingly small mod per clutch feel

What controls were you wanting?

Sorry for thread hijack, but Brent, do you have the trim piece for right above the front license plate? cheers!

Those electrical gremlins are a right pain in the a$$. Check your fuse box and see if there is a separate fuse for the rear lights, if not pull the fuse and check it or replace it anyway. Next step is to trace the wiring which is a nightmare! Maybe its a bulb issue? Check those .. Spoiler light is your mid top third stop light I assume? Do they light up properly when braking? If not I'd get onto it quick as you'll end up with someone mashing into the back of your car .. Rear running lights not working is one thing but if the braking lights are out its real trouble!!

haha! well the stigma of m3 drivers has now passed on a bit to audi s4 drivers so we're considered a little less wanky

What BMW's other than a E30 M3 have dogleg gearboxs?
handgrenade replied to Golfboy666GTI's topic in General Discussion
Haha I just remember the Top Gear episode (15, 2) where May has the cosworth e190 with the dogleg box and keeps reversing into things. even the german tuning guy who turned up to put the cars through a safety check chucked it into 'first' and went backwards and uttered a 'shiza!' -
Wife took the M3 for a drive this arvo
