  1. I had planned on putting these on a E39 Touring  which I doubt now I am going to own, and looking to do more work on my 540 so needing to free up some cash.

These have been balanced twice by Miramar bridgestone as I had a shimmy but I believe that is my suspension, not the wheels.

These were originally @qube's which he bored out to 74.1 CB for the E39 but they will fit the E34 72.6 with hubcentric rings.

1 wheel (rear) has been refurbed by wheel magician. Two front tyres are new (maybe have done 100km on them if that) and the rears still have plenty of life.

Asking $2000 ONO. Located in Wellington, tyres are currently mounted. Includes the BMW centers.

Tyres are OEM sizes staggered. Fronts 235/40/18 Hankook Ventus V2's (new), Rears 265/35/18 Hankook V12 EVO (used but plenty of life left)

    215,000 km.

I was able to get in touch with FCP before they shipped it out and canceled the order...probably saved me $120 in postage alone.  Thanks @BreakMyWindow ..I gotta stop being lazy and keep cross referencing realOEM. After messaging with Martin and Russell I think I'm just going to live with the clonk for abit longer...hopefully it gets worse making it abit more obvious to what it is. In other news, gave it a clean this morning.

  3. Booked the 540i into Wellington European to inspect the suspension and see if they could diagnose the steering clonk. They have done WOFs for me in the past and they have a courtesy car which when you have a small baby makes it alot easier to drop the car off. Visually they couldn't find anything showing wear and suggested/educated guess to replace the center drag link at a cost of $750 (part only). I have ordered the drag link off FCP along with new tie rods coming in at $410 NZD inc postage (probably going to get a call from customs wanting some money in a few days time). Also I have noticed now I have the shimmy back at 80km..This seems to have come back since I did the swaybar endlinks and  I thought it was because I didn't torque the lug nuts down enough but it kind of comes and goes and today I noticed it feels like it settles if you stay at that speed for a while and it's not as violent as it was before I did the control arms...I'm guessing/hoping the noise and the vibration are related to the drag link...will wait and see.  On a positive note I got around to inspecting the drivers seat to see why it was clicking under load and it turns out the back left mounting bolt was loose. So the seat click has gone! I'm now wondering if the mpar vibration is more suspension than balance related.

Installed OEM Lemforder end links today along with OEM ARB bushings.

Road tested and while the front does feel better, I still have the clonk...I'm starting to wonder if it's the shock or the spring binding...Will book it in with Auto38 when he's back from Holiday.

Checked the steering box and front subframe bolts? My old 540i had a random clonk and it turned out to be a loose steering box mounting bolt.

Thanks Martin, I'll have a look. I would love it to be something simple

  6. Have had a balance issue with the Mpars vibrating (similar to thrust arm vibration) @80km/h so have gone back to the style 66's. Took them back to the shop which re-balanced them however said there was nothing more they could do. Style 66's back on and no vibration @80km. Will save the balancing issue for a rainy day, unless someone wants to buy them off me...yours for $2000 located in Welly.

I'm still chasing an intermittent front end clonk, it comes up through the steering column when suspension is loaded up or with a sudden change of direction, but isn't consistent with the steering...seems more a load issue.  You can also kinda feel it through the floor panel too and it's significantly more noticeable once the car is hot and has a full tank of gas.

centre drag link + tie-rods + pitman arm bushings were replaced at around 170,000km according to maintenance records.

I've replaced the strut mount and have sway bar links on the way. Sway bar links are cheaper than drag link so figured I would try this first.

I have re-torqued everything to spec and have got in with a pry bar to try find some play but can't find any weak point ?

If the sway bar links don't fix it, it might be time to take it to a specialist. What do you guys think?

Its one of those cars that you gotta love, willing to sink money into, and intend to keep for some time, otherwise its just a ticking time bomb basically.

wait till you get an F chassis car.. you cant compare parts prices.. my waterpump was quoted $1322.21+GST from AKL BMW. lol

I deleted my comment cause I thought it was abit dumb...who hasn't spent a tonne of money on maintenance on their BMW!  But totally agree on high km E39 is going to need some $$ put into it...and the E60's  are so cheap now...you really have to want an E39 to go in. Oh man.....i keep looking at F11 535i Tourings...... ?

  8. Haven't done anything drastic to this car in a while now. Thinking about changing the wheels so went snapping tonight for a bit of before after documentation. Excuse the babyseat in the rear ?

More than welcome to take my E39 for a spin.

I haven’t done my shocks yet but my tyres are new and it might give you an idea of what a 214,000 km on original shocks feels like..... @Mikan recently did the shocks in his M- Sport touring (OEM Sachs) ....probably more relevant as to what you are trying to figure out than mine but the offers there.
