I am assuming that once replaced the engine should be reliable for another 100k kms?

    No.

They have valvetronic / CCV issues as well. Just avoid unless you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. There is a reason there are so many 'my E90 320i is broken' threads on here.

just put it back in after charging it, starts fine, no error for discharge while it ran. 14.9 volts at idle so alternator is working. I'll keep an eye on it see how it goes. i'll get a mate to bring his laptop when he comes to visit in a few weeks and check the coding as well

If you have an iphone and bluetooth obd adapter, bimmerlink app will let you choose appropriate amperage battery and code to car.

  3. Fair points @Vass. The power delivery is actually not unpleasant on the N46 if you can get the engine oilproof and it's quite a light engine...those are probably the only two positives. I thought a rear bumper in this colour shouldn't be too hard to source. The light error will be a problem with the footwell module, relatively easily fixed. Sunroof might be more of a challenge.

  4. Having watched a LOT of M539 restorations on youtube lately I'm finding myself unexplainably drawn to this - downsides are the fact that its' ass is dragging on the ground (presume cheap lowering springs), it's cosmetically pretty rough and most of all it's powered by the shitty N46. But it's a well specced manual 3 series touring so possibly worth saving despite that. Reckon you could probably triple / quadruple your purchase price to get it going well though. WOF history suggests it hasn't had much love for a while

Might be wrong, but isn't this the touring that was for sale for ages and finally sold about 6 months ago?

Not sure if it is the same one. Don’t think the other black one had a sunroof? Also this one has been on 6 different plates since arrival and is now running a beautiful set of Goodrides to put down the 400kW. I love the idea but I think I’ll pass on this one

EDIT: it’s definitely not the same one, I remember now that one had a hitch receiver towbar

    +1 on very very tempting.

Would be keen to hear from you two owners if using this kind of car for a 50km return commute on 100kph open highway each day would be wise / not wise? Don't really care about fuel costs, but would that sort of trip be enough to get things nice and hot to keep the car happy?

I understand it’ll average somewhere between 15-18l/100k in that sort of use. So 400k out of a 68L / $170ish fill every 10 days. That’s gonna get old fast IMO

He also put me onto Autopassion to see if they offer any ready made exhaust options for the E46. They don't but whilst I was at it, asked them about the chip tuning service they offer and claimed they have a tune for the 330i that increases power from 231hp to 262hp and torque from 300Nm to 345Nm at a cost of $895. Does that seem legit? Haven't really looked into chip tuning before so not sure if there are any downsides to it?

Seems a big power jump claim for an NA engine. Car is looking awesome...feel like a rear PDC retrofit and carplay capable HU would be the cherry on top.

P.s my ideal checklist, if you happen to know of something on the market is...

    • Alpinweiss (for sun baking avoidance). 7 seats. Leather (heated). Adaptive cruise. Facelift. NZ new. Some form of servicing history. Less than 160,000kms and $20k. I don't ask for much, right?

More post-script.. I love this forum. Cheers everyone.

Very few NZ New X5 35i's, majority will be 30d with a smattering of 40d/50d. Would avoid a post facelift 35d as they'll be ex-Japan and likely with AdBlue emissions gubbins to go wrong. Facelift came with the ZF 8 speed which is much better than the old 6 speed auto. N57 in 30d/40d guise is a sound engine IMO (I have it in my 335d). I would steer clear of anything with dubious service history, even factory service intervals are too long
