Fair point but surely auto < manual. Or does the comfort of not having to shift technically makes it go on the pov spec

Quite a niche market for this one. Interested to see if someone would actually take it.

E30
in Want to buy
@Gaz I’ve been talking to the guy about it, needs some work interior and definitely exterior but definitely is in the cards. Thanks for the heads up!
-
Wonder if this is any better? Not a m20 and complete pov spec.

40 minutes ago, Olaf said:All the work's been done, and it's certed. Not to say you wouldn't spend a few $k on sorting the body - does it have the usual e30 rust or is it clean and sorted? My personal view is those wheels are dugly, but one many's meat is another's poison! It might need a few $k on bringing maintenance up to spec, or it could be good. But hey, if it's certed, wof'd, and rego'd, and it's an M52B28, and a slicktop coupe, for $13k. Worth investigating at least. [EDIT: wonder which gearbox they used?]
I suspect it'll shift quickly unless there's something glaringly wrong. Note: this is not a recommendation for you to buy. Caveat emptor.
Yeah, definitely not perfect but there’s some work done to it. Looks like except for the cracked dash, interior’s tidy. The dent on the passenger door has rust (who knows how deep), not a fan of the wheels and the side skirts, unsure of the gearbox, and apparently there’s wiring issues that they were quoted 4k for - seller couldn’t clarify what the issue was but apparently it needed that done for it to be drivable daily? Was on the market before (unsure how long ago) and didn’t sell so that also raises question marks.
I had to look up what caveat emptor meant 😅

I'm just trying to say that it's only time before that big patch of bog will start rusting underneath and start cracking off. I've seen it happen a fair bit before, no car is safe, especially not if the bog already looks like that.
Thanks for clarifying, I assumed that’s what you meant but just wanted to know for sure

@Sammo oh, yeah I saw that but I was trying to figure out what simca actually meant.
Did simca mean that those that he’s seen patches of bog like that has always had crack and rust underneath?
-
@Olaf and @Southerner, thoughts on this? https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-3119191390.htm
In the other thread, seems the main worry is the passenger door.

What do you mean?

Thank you so much for such a thorough response. Obviously, I haven’t looked it up but I thought that surely someone has done it before. I’m unaware of most of the history of the 3 series so this may be a dumb question but is there a reason why you want a 318is replica?
I agree @E28E30, so thankful that I found this forum. The wealth of knowledge and experience in here is immense. @Olaf What did you mean by it having a short shelf life?
Coincidentally, there’s a m52 swapped e30 that just popped up today. Looks reasonably tidy, apparently it’s been listed before but expired.

May as well go n52

@Olaf that’s roughly the ballpark I’m thinking of - I’ve saved up almost all of that already. Couldn’t follow why you said that that’s why you went m42? And also why is M5x the sensible move?
@Southerner Is the hassle of having a different engine bay worth the cheaper price when it comes to putting in a b25? M52 is always going to be different but at least with the b25, if I get a m20 base it’d be easier?
Thanks for the input by the way, sorry I relocated this to another thread as I don’t want to take the other thread over with project questions.

Just now, E28E30 said:Think that makes sense where did you source the manual bits and bobs from?
The fb post I posted up on here. Bit of a gamble but probably gonna need to rebuild any engine that I end up buying anyway.

I have a real weird criteria in my head haha. If I’m going full resto, I’d rather it be a coupe. But if interior/exterior is relatively tidy already and just need to repower then open to sedans for the right price.

Yeah it’s a b25, would it be hard to cert 1.6 to 2.5? Also I think 316i don’t come fitted with AC

Best approach is probably to spam the E30 Facebook groups and wave some cash around and tempt all the lads with projects / decent cars that never would otherwise see the market...
Looked very well maintained though, so all I’d need really is a powertrain, which I’m picking up this weekend in Tauranga. Actually if anyone has a Ute and not using it this Saturday, would be great if I could borrow it - will compensate of course. Otherwise it’s going in the back of my hatchback 😅
That is quite literally what I did last night 😂. Hoping something right turns up.

Why did it go so quick?! Can someone buy a tidy one for me if it’s well priced and within my budget and I’ll pay you back when I get back to my phone 😂 lowkey serious. My timing is awful.
-
Not sure if this is the right place for this (admin please move if needed) but what’s the going rate for a 130i powertrain? (N52 blacktop + manual transmission)

That’s what I was thinking hahaha. Does anyone wanna buy it and I’ll joyride from the back?

Was never a big fan of the rivets, at least mold it on.
