huff3r 347 Report post Posted July 23, 2008 Just bought a BMW 320i off trademe to turn in to a racecar at tech. I'm doing the motorsport course at WINTEC, so i figured it would be a good project and a great way to get into racing. So far all i've doneis replace the thermostat while i wait for space in the panel shop at tech. Dyno tested with the faulty thermostat at a measly 73kw at the wheels, but hopefully putting in a pod filter soon. Pics to come later

huff3r 347 Report post Posted July 24, 2008 73kW is pretty bloody good for an old stock 320 That was with a stuffed thermostat... it was running really rich, around 0.7 Llambda... So it should have maybe 5 more kws now... It was real well looked after too... cambelts every 40,00kms, services every 2000kms...

Braeden320 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2008 Thats awesome! Even better that you can do it as part of your course. Keep us updated!
Driftit 2079 Report post Posted July 26, 2008 Sweet would be awesome to build something like that at tech. BTW. A pod filter is not always an upgrade. A few BMW forums have proven the stock box with a panel filter to be the best. Have a play around.
huff3r 347 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 Got the sunroof out at tech today... the mounting bracket was pretty rusty, so i guess thats where my water leak is....

huff3r 347 Report post Posted August 22, 2008 Time for an update... Removed windscreen... now needs a new one thanks to some improper removal techniques Fixed rust in right rear door, just needs painting. In the process of fixing all other rust. Finally got the sunroof bracket out.... found a huge amount of rust under a huge amount of silicone sealant.... Hopefully the car will be done soon so i can get racing this year! huff3r 347 Report post Posted September 14, 2008 More updates.... Fabricated cold airbox... still working on air ducts... _BRS_ 209 Report post Posted September 14, 2008 did you just fabricate a custom air box or use a template from somewhere? keen for pics on that!
huff3r 347 Report post Posted September 14, 2008 did you just fabricate a custom air box or use a template from somewhere? keen for pics on that! Just fabricated one... its only 1mm mild steel so i dont know if it'll do anything, and its waaay more complicated than it should be... just clears the alternator belt too.I think it's actually a little too short, as it isn't indenting the heatshielding under the bonnet, so maybe too much clearance? I'll post some pics up soon... mayb tuesday

huff3r 347 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 Got some pics of the airbox now... and got the front laterals of the cage almost done... so stoked im finally gettn somewhere Cold Air Box with Pod Filter I think its a little low... so working on a solution Cold Air Box without filter.... A little more complicated than it needs to be New Project : Lid for Cold Air Box Hopefully this will help it to stay "Cold".... wouldnt be a good CAI without the "cold" bit
huff3r 347 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Would anyone be able to tell me whether anything i do to the car to make it up to e30 class spec would require a cert? or is it all covered through the authority card? ie. my roll cage, seats, harnesses, springs + shocks and wheels...
3series 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 some people have been certed, I think most people aren't. Mine doesnt and I've got all you've mentioned above. I'm unsure what would require a cert exactly.
huff3r 347 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Yeah... most people i know reckon i dont need one... but im not sure where they r gettn their info from, and i need the car road legal soon so if i needed a cert for something i would need that done first so... mayb i shud talk to vtnz.... Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 No cert required for the mods we do for the race series, Authority card covers the cage, belts and braided brake lines. You should have no trouble getting wof.
huff3r 347 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Sweet, now i just have to wait a week til tech re-opens so i can finish my cage... and get some seats .... i was a little worried cos its a bit hard to move a car thats not road legal to wellington without a trailer
