westy 614 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) What happens when you combine one of these With one of these? Well, I still dont know! But heres some photos, cause everyone likes photos What was left of the donor. Out with the old. Engine hoist? What engine hoist? A little rust! Not bad for a 23 year old car. Setting out the engine. M52tub28. Front suspension setout. Wheel placement Slight difference in track Modified subframe. Sway bar and steering linkage yet to be installed Amazing how similar these cars are Dash mocked up Some finished stuff E46 mirror motors in e30 housing Steering column and pedals And a taste of whats to come Phew! that took me a while. Biggest problem with this car at the moment is deciding what I want it to be. It started as a nice road car but the temptation to turn it into a race car is strong. In the meantime I'll keep plugging away at it. Don't expect too much progress, I'm fairly slow HA! Andre3000 55 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) Im not gonna lie that is f**king badass. I think after all the effort you've put into the dash, steering column, wing mirrors, etc it would be a shame to dedicate it to the track. Where did you get that exhaust manifold? Looks hori as Damn you for having garage space. Edited July 15, 2009 by André3000

OLLIE 26 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 It's a tough choice aye Tony. On one hand - it would make a great race car On the other hand - you have put a lot of effort into transferring all the road comforts over from the E46 tough tough decision. ... Race Car! westy 614 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) One of the big problems is that the E46 heater box wont fit behind the dash, it's really big. So all the work on the console might fail. It's all controlled by servos and trying to adapt them to an E30 heater.... One of the motivations for a race car! The E46 cluster is smaller then the E30 so a bit of gluing, filling, sanding and painting later... The wing mirror glass pieces are identical in shape!! Sun shines on a dogs arse sometimes. The reason for transferring all these things is to make it all work on the E46 electronics. Its easier for me to do this than trying to make the electronics work on the E30 stuff. Exhaust manifolds are standard, more on this later. Oh yea, there are more photos in the gallery. Edited December 14, 2009 by westy

Apex 693 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 Ten points. Can you do mine next Love the concept of all the stuff that’s makes the new cars so good coupled with the lightness and overall awesomeness the is the E30.
CamB 48 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 Hang on, so talk to be about the front suspension. Am I seeing the E46 subframe in the E30? How many mods did this need to fit, and does this correct the caster issue that the E30 has with the E30 subframe and regular (not M3 Evo) lower arms? Coz your caster looks fine. Presumably you then just use the E46 engine mounting arms etc, and don't have any issue with needing to change the sump????? Or am I missing something! westy 614 Report post Posted July 15, 2009 Ok so somebodys paying attention! Take an E30 subframe, cut the mounting points (ends) off, weld the E46 centre between them forward 50mm to shift the control arm mounting to center the wheels and recess the engine 50mm into the firewall to clear the sump. Knock up some rear control arm mounts (cut from the E46) and the subframe and E46 front end bolts to the E30. This means I keep the rack, sump, subframe brace from the E46 and the sump guard from the South African E46. Sump should be a lot safer behind the subframe now. The E30 subframe bolts are quite small so I'd like to add some on a tag laterally through the chassis arms.
