E39 M5 restoration project

Recommended Posts

The Devil is in the detail. The pre FL headlamp brackets only allow 3 of the 4 bolts to secure the headlamps, only 2 were holding in one headlamp so I went and got some proper FL headlamp brackets with all new fasteners.

The rear license plate LED's were just a tad bright so I bought brand-new incandescent items, along with a FL windscreen washer fluid filler neck.

Not a great deal going on with the restoration project at the moment. Mainly just enjoying it as a weekend car. New clutch, flywheel, guibo and centre bearing should be done in the next few weeks. Also considering some Eisenmann race back boxes if I can get a good shipping rate.

Did change the oil and filter today, and had a muck around with DIS activating the vanos solenoids - All produce a healthy click.

Those factory wheels with high quality rubber on them look refreshingly fantastic.

It packs it with about 1/2 km of bubble wrap in to a box, and then it sends it to Chch to have a new LCD and ribbon cable installed.

I did my E39 one myself but it was a bit of mission and still cost $60 for the new ribbon. Got Kerry in Christchurch to fix my E31 MID. No hassle, a better job than I could do myself and all for $150. Bargain.

I received a new LCD panel and ribbon when I bought the M5. Am a keen diy'er but a bit too risky given the rare availablity of the M5 cluster.

The 16:9 widescreen monitor had an intermittent problem with buttons not working. Now sorted as of this morning. Pulled it apart and found the optical rotary encoder module was loose. Removed it, re-seated the contact plate and re-installed :

(Female voice) <-- nice!

Does it sound like a nice one though?

Usually I find those systems versions are similar to that of a butch lesbian..
