Still a noob. Need a new motor

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I haven't posted much here, I have been busy with the miata...

Anyway, I am between selling the e30.. or putting a new motor in it!

Help me, I have been weighing up a few options..

1uz (V8)

SR20Det (4 cyl turbo)

m20b20

I have a 1989 316i E30 4 door.

The thing is just crazy slow! What do you guys recommend?

What are you looking to spend?

A M50/M52 swap is pretty straight forward, if you wanna keep it BMW..

I do want to keep the cost as minimal as possible.

I am simply after some more power as the 1.6 is just well.. has none.. How hard are those engines to come by?

yeah, as John said, an M50/M52 swap would probably be the best, and to try keep costs down.

You would be looking at 10k min to do a decent 1UZ swap, realistically 15k+ once you add on drive terrain costs and all the other small things required to make it all work.

:)

Ooosh , thought that would be the case!

Dreams are free...

I will be keeping an eye out for a M52 then!

Side note: How big are the monthly meets?

Could sell it for near the same amount as buying a 325i e30?

Understandable. My mate has a 1.8 in his e21 and is in the same boat as you - too slow so wants something with more power. He ended up buying an engine on here, a rebuilt m20b27 stroker with gearbox for $3k I think. Had quite a lot of work done to it too.

You should go with an m50 conversion I reckon. Not very expensive.

Absolutely awesome!

Thanks for that, I'll keep an eye out for a M50.

Think a M50 could handle ~10psi of boost?

M50B25 would be straight forward, you already have the right gearbox if it's a Getrag240 manual, gearbox sits on the correct angle for the m50 motor in an e30.

Awesome, I won't lie, I have no clue what the hell I am doing when it comes to the E30, my miata, that is a different story. All I do know is I need MOAR POWAR! :D

Just keep an eye out for already completed swaps, or, removed conversions etc for sale, might be able to pick up a setup for a good price.

Also, consider extra costs like clutch and worn items when doing the swap, and future running costs etc

Could be a useful source of parts. Bilsteins plus sump guards and everything you'll need for the swap. At that price, strip what you need and onsell the rest, it'll probably work out cheaper than collecting all the bits yourself.

Give us a Budget to work with?

Polley, is your M50 running standard Headgasket/head bolts with that boost?

Oh sorry! Didn't realize this went onto a second page.

Don't want to spend much more then 3k. It will be fairly tight..

I suggest using a standard E30 engine to keep costs down

Either a M20b20 or M20b25 . Both would give you much better power than a 1.6
