qwertyk1d 12 Report post Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) Hi all. I've recently bought an 89 E30 4 Door. Im looking at insurance options at the moment. I was wondering what experiences you have all had with the various companies and what company you recommend to insure a slightly modified E30 (bodykit, wheels, suspension etc). Cheers Edited May 8, 2014 by Skeet
piiiiij 22 Report post Posted April 28, 2014 I'm no expert but from my experience insurers don't like insuring mods when they go further than wheels or a sound system, especially when their value is too high relative to the value of the car. I had my E34 insured for $3k with State until I bought my exhaust, which came to about $1.5k after Customs took their cut. State wouldn't insure that so referred me to NAC who specialise in insuring modified vehicles. So far I've had no major problems with them. My RRS is insured with State and I would definitely recommend them if they will insure your modifications, otherwise I guess NAC.
Driftit 2069 Report post Posted April 28, 2014 You will also need to inform them of every change you make as you go. If you are adding "value" to the vehicle it will be in breach of your contract. Always call and discuss what you are going to do BEFORE you do it. Many (especially State) will cancel your insurance on the spot if you have modified your car since the initial agreement was signed. HappyH00ker 30 Report post Posted April 28, 2014 Recommend you give Swann Insurance a call.. https://www.swanninsurance.co.nz/Insurance/Pages/Classic-Car.aspx Classic Car option is very comprehensive, even offers Track Day coverage and has no mileage limitations, and fairly priced.
qwertyk1d 12 Report post Posted April 28, 2014 Agreed value for an E30 according to AMI and State is a maximum of $2900.. What a joke. I'll give Swann a call, thanks John.
jake1829 119 Report post Posted April 28, 2014 I have been with AA for years - my 335i was initially with them - but then when informing them about the mods - they wouldn't cover me anymore (not surprised as they don't even insure you if you buy a M3) Switched over to NAC and they seem to be fine with all the mods i have done etc - Tho am looking at maybe Prestigo or someone else as they offer track day cover

Navin 180 Report post Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) I had a similar problem recently with a turbo integra I had a few months ago. NAC initially valued it at $6000 but the guy on the phone was a gc and suggested getting it valuated by an independent valuer. I ended up going with Darren fron Auto-car-tel, he had a good look over the car and looked at the extensive amount of receipts that I had and valued it at $16k which I was extremely happy with. NAC happily agreed on the price after this. Valuation only costed around the $80 mark from memory Edited April 29, 2014 by Navin
Kepes 231 Report post Posted April 29, 2014 The insurance company im with valued my car for what I bought it for... so $1500. But I just got a good deal. E30 325i. Too low? I might try grtting someone to value it like Navin did.
Young Thrash Driver 1020 Report post Posted April 29, 2014 Or you could be slightly cunning and inflate the price you tell them you paid. AA is fine with 4k on my E30.
qwertyk1d 12 Report post Posted May 2, 2014 I paid $5800 for mine with 65kms on the clock. Manual and mint inside and out.

_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted May 2, 2014 No offence, but that seems about right for a 316i! i agree Or you could be slightly cunning and inflate the price you tell them you paid. AA is fine with 4k on my E30. They would be fine with $20k too. Doesn't mean thats what they will pay out if it all goes pear shaped
Kepes 231 Report post Posted May 2, 2014 While we're here talking about E30's and their value, is it just me or do they seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper?
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted May 2, 2014 (edited) While we're here talking about E30's and their value, is it just me or do they seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper? depends what you are looking for now. the nice ones definitely going the other way but like any car this old, plenty that can be picked up for $300 or less if you can be bothered. i have people trying to sell them to me all the time lol Edited May 2, 2014 by _Ethrty-Andy_
euroriffic 607 Report post Posted May 2, 2014 (edited) I thought they were going up in value. I remember 8 years ago when I had mine they were everywhere and cheap as they appeared to be the Toyota dx's replacement as the cheapest rwd since everyone started wanting a million dollars for one but now the e30 seems less common and cost more. Edit or it's because I havnt cruise trown every weekend since I sold mine Edited May 2, 2014 by euroriffic
MISS BM 712 Report post Posted May 2, 2014 Just updated my insurance for the Schnitzel, and got a few quotes to pick which insurance I should go with, $110 per month for 3rd Party! What the fark! That was double the quote for the 540i and they are within a couple thousand of insurance valuations.. Surely this can't be right? Might ask my brokers to search through different companies (with NZI for the last 4 years)
KwS 2421 Report post Posted May 3, 2014 (edited) Im with State and have been for the past 5-6 years, with no claims. They have never had an issue with my modifications as long as the value of the mods didnt exceed 25% of the insured value of the car. My M3 is insured with them now, considering the type of car it is, and the insured value the cost is pretty reasonable. I also have another car and contents with them too. qwertyk1d 12 Report post Posted May 8, 2014 I ended up going with AA with an agreed value of $5800 and excess of $500. $1850 for accessories (to cover wheels and tyres should they go missing) and I opted for Third Party, Fire & Theft and it costs $17 per fortnight. Works out at about $450 a year. Full comp was $880 per year with agreed value.
