X5 Offroading?

I think I gasped and cringed when I saw the following photo on the Bmw NZ facebook page.. A 5d..

I don't think I could ever bring myself to test Bmws off road potential like this brave dude...

As an ex 4x4 guy I wanna see the the after picture with those 21 inch wheels and tires and road suspension :P

It's funny how most people think the X5 is not supposed to be used off-road! Ok, so it's no LWB Landcruiser or Rangie, but with all the trickery on-board they are pretty capable on the slippery stuff. Anyone who has done the Parcours and off-road section of the Ultimate Drive Day will tell you how surprising the capabilites are.

Tyres would be the biggest restriction to the off-road performance - can you even get mud-tyres in ultra-low profile 20" run flats?

I bet there is some clause that it voids the factory warranty though.

my definition of a capable offroader must be very different to yours i think Jon. not some nancy boy stuff they probably do at the BMW sponsored days.

Nothing like taking a 4x4 to its very limits, THAT tests its capabilities. I bet my GQ Patrol will go more places than that X5, and all it has is a rear LSD. No wizardry of any kind, and its the same size truck.

edit: that said, wouldn't mind taking this one for a squirt

I'm not talking about full on winching and green-laning here Andy, just the ability to get over rough and slippery stuff.

Without sounding too much like a corporate drone, this is a quote from 4x4 Action Adventure magazine about the X3..."Our only real offroading was on the sand tracks along behind the dunes on Puheke Beach at the top of KariKari Penninsula, where the power and torque of the big six diesel just ploughed through the deep soft sand climbs as though they were SH1" and that was with 19" M-Sport rims and road tyres.

As it has been said though, most people are a little bit shy of doing things like that in their shiny / expensive BMW SUV!

BMW did learn a lot during the few years they owned LR. I suspect they gave more to LR though.

My old E53 seen water all the time when fishing, but nothing really over the centre of the tire.

Imagine doing a track in one and getting some of those sensors etc wet. Save your money and buy a Safari.

Gotta love the people here who have no idea, reason why i left this place. so it has a big price tag, can still easily play with the big boys. We service a couple that go places no other 4x4 have gone (from what they have said). I've done an XDrive course through work. Very pleasantly surprised with the terrain they could tackle.

It looks fine here - maybe a little low..

But wouldn't be keen to take it swimming.. That's just me I guess, and the theory of a car that price doing that, I would be nervous (unless I won the lotto, of course)

I did too! You've got a good memory.

It's not the price tag that defines where it goes, that's up the 'nut(s)' behind the wheel.

All terrain tyres running lower pressures on 17's or 18s make the X5 very capable, more so than some would believe.

Manual and diesel is like a tractor on slippery surfaces :ph34r:

Different story on the 19's with HP road tyres in the paddock , but it does do awesome donuts

Yeah, mine had the E70 wheels at 20" - stability control off, add one wet paddock & install fun.

Still like to see one keep up with a lifted terrano on 31" mudders in a waist deep mess of mud soup. In saying that, for the coin charged for them, I'd hope they were reasonably capable on paddocks and sand etc

You can't really compare an out-of-the-box multi-use vehicle with a "specialist" 4x4

I have no doubt that an X5 is capable to a point on road and that it would be ok on snowy roads, maybe gravel, but apparently they're now better than anything else at both?
