Trolley jack recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I have one of these and its pretty legit - https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/toolpro-toolpro-low-profile-garage-jack-3000kg/563849.html and looks like the same thing as Sammos but in racing red.

I have a Wayco Jack. It cost me around $18K in lost income when I tried to pick it up one day. Wrecked my back.

My Wayco one since failed.

It did a lot of work though.

However it never made up for ruining my back.

Sorry to hear, back issues are a bitch, but to be fair, if it would not have been the jack, it probably would have something else you would have lifted instead.

What I am most interested in when it comes to the jacks, does anyone know about the quality of STA parts at all? I know that mainly the American car guys shop there but was wondering if the quality is good, I am planning to have a drive there tomorrow to have a look at their jacks.

Segedins on Dominion Road sell low profile aluminium floor jacks, good prices also depending on the load

Dubman seems to have had exposure to them by the looks of it, anybody else out there who can say something to the quality of their jacks?

Yup, my mate has one of these as well - used it to do suspension before I bought my own - grunty as and good buying when on 'special'.

@kiwi75 I would grab one of those for $240 TBH

I'm not a jack expert, but after my crappy '1.5 ton' (LOL) jack from supercheap couldn't lift my E46 high enough to get jackstands underneath before sagging out, I got one of these from an outfit on the North Shore:

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/car-parts-accessories/tools-repair-kits/other/listing/2937002980?bof=SkHPhXfD

Had no issues with it - built like a tank (well over 40kg), lifts my car with minimal pumps like its a feather and has a nice slow release.

I have one that looks like that - mine is red. You really don't want to carry it far.
The release was a bit snatchy to start with but gets better with use.
Only thing I might like (aside from it being lighter!) is to have a quicklift function, but I can easily live without that.

I actually ended up buying the Segedin 3 ton jack

https://www.staparts.co.nz/View-A-Product?id=29458&Productid=Jack 3 ton workshop floor low profile min height 70mm max 50

what they didn't say on the webpage is that it actually has a dual pump and hence a quick-lift function.

I think it actually is bang for the buck and pretty solid; the selling point for me was that for home use and not operating under full load all the time it will last longer than a jack designed for less weight.

I will post an update after I had some quality time with it but I reckon NZD 308,- including 2 axle stands is an OK price

I like that power built jack though. Well priced and all my power built stuff is still going. Don't think I have broken any of it in a good 20+ years.

My Wayco is too short for 4wds. And too tall for anything else.

But I just lined up one of these. Sick of rolling around on the floor and saves putting another bay on the garage for parking space. Somehow I feel the E34 will live on it.

I bought mine when Repco had it on special and the price is similar, but I have to pay the shipping to my home as at the time there's no stock in Auckland.

Are you able to jack your E46 to jack stand height in one operation with this jack? The nonsense I have to go through to get my E82 on jack stands is usually the worst part of any job...

I am quite low so I still have so low ramps I drive onto and then jack up - this lifts really high as well, so no issue getting stands under even when extended a fair amount.

10 or so pumps to more than high enough for jack stands I would say.

I actually just sold this jack but that’s only because I moved house and my car is now parked down several flights of stairs from my tool shed and this bad boy is well over 40kg.

Got a 1.5 ton alloy jack (have not used yet) which I’m sure won’t be as good but it’s only 15kg.

So you reckon on a standard ride height it would be a one step thing? (not holding you to this btw :D)...I'm just sick of the faffing about to get on jackstands.

Ahh looks like I missed out....still even at retail price it seems a good deal...bloody heavy by the sounds of it though.

Not sure TBH, if your E82 is Msport it’s likely lowish at the front already?

I just  got those black plastic low profile ramp things - about 60cm long and 10cm tall for $60 on Trade Me.

Yeah it is kind of low actually...probably those ramps are a good idea. I'll pick a set up.
