eliongater 718 Report post Posted July 29, 2015 (edited) So I bought my first car on the week end, but it needs a bit of work... It's a 1985 Bronzit 525e that is half way through a manual swap, it's got manual windows and sunroof but that just means less things to break (I hope). It's a bit of a mess at the moment, most of the center console is taken apart and there is no gearbox or driveshaft in it. The previous owner has done most of the electronics and put the pedal box in. Edited July 29, 2015 by eliongater
eliongater 718 Report post Posted July 29, 2015 Is the 260 I have the correct one for an 85 eta?
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted July 29, 2015 looks about right, though someone else with more early 80s knowledge will chime in. I assume you will be getting flywheel redone!!

BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted July 29, 2015 looks like the gearbox has had the holes drilled for the crank sensor , but I don't see the trigger point on the flywheel , it wont run if it does not have that . I may have a correct flywheel in stock for that model thanks [email protected] looks a bit like this http://blog.bavauto.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/flywheel_manual_ref_pin_text.jpg
eliongater 718 Report post Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) I took some more photos of the flywheel and clutch. Does everything look ok? Also took a photo of my helper... EDIT: Yes they are gardening gloves, I didn't want to get the camera dirty Edited July 30, 2015 by eliongater
eliongater 718 Report post Posted July 30, 2015 So... I think I might have a Victor Reinz headgasket as I have a VR exhaust shield (See the photos in the linked thread) and my engine looks similar to the one in the photos (in regards to the oil on the block and not the head). Would be a good time to put on a different head though http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106683&page=

eliongater 718 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 I hate it when I'm right... I did mention to the guy selling it that I thought the gearbox wouldn't fit because it was off an m30 and it doesn't fit my m20 (no suprises there)... So now I need to either: Get the right gearbox for my car (swaps anyone?) Get an m30 for my car Put someother engine and gearbox in my car or get a car with an m30 and manual swap it and get rid of the e28 Ideas?
kulgan 1042 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Easiest option would be to spend the time tracking down the right gearbox for your car. Save you the hassle of getting it certed. And with the ammount of knowledge and parts tucked away by members here I'm sure something will come up.
eliongater 718 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) If I did something that would require a cert, go big or go home? manual m60b40 swap? I think putting an m30 into it probably wouldn't be worth it as I would need a cert for that, so I may as well put something worthwhile into it... EDIT: I think just getting the correct gearbox would be simplest... Edited August 11, 2015 by eliongater
eliongater 718 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 After further research I think need another g260 (probably the same as euroho) and some appropriate drive shaft and shift linkage
Neal 543 Report post Posted August 14, 2015 Was the first owner of this car based in Wellington ? ( MT Victoria or Wgtn City Terrace) If so it was on old boss's car and I drove it a number of times in the 80s :-)

eliongater 718 Report post Posted August 27, 2015 (edited) Got it started. But it dies if you give it any throttle from idle. I attached the auto bellhousing so I could plug the sensors in. Does it sound normal for having only the manifolds on? Also I can only get it started by bridging pins 11 and 14 on the diagnostics plug, turning the key does nothing. M M 250 Report post Posted August 27, 2015 It won't start from the key because you probably haven't jumped the wires at the auto shifter switch for the lock out (have you?). Once I had the flywheel on right, mine sounded pretty much the same without the exhaust on so I think it's correct.

I have bridged the pins on auto plug, but I have a feeling it might be something to do with that.Good to know. Now I just need to decided if I can find the right drive shaft (already found gearboxes) or to just do an m30 swap, which makes sense as I can get an m30 foe less than a getrag
M M 250 Report post Posted August 27, 2015 (edited) I would do the m30, you could probably sell the eta motor as well (someone with more experience could confirm this, I'm not sure what they're worth). Which pins did you jump? Tell me the wire colors too, mine were 3 brown wires, two of which had black stripes if I remember correctly. I followed this guide: http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Engines_Troubleshoot Which told me to jump pins 11 and 14 here: http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Diagnostic_Plug My engine has the earlier half round plug. I know that the crank in the eta engine is worth $500 by itself. Edited August 28, 2015 by eliongater
