E36 328i - Drag racing, underglow and more...

Recommended Posts

Now that I'm actually doing some interesting stuff to this car it's time to start a thread.

I bought this off a member on here almost 2 years ago. Here's the day I picked it up.

Completely unmoslested factory 328i, Mtech, non sunroof, auto, even had the factory radio.

So of course, I had to molest it...

I've been slowly working on it since I got it, and lately I've been able to do a bit more. So far I've done:

  • Manual swap with Getrag
  • Style 32 wheels 17x8 et20, painted by myself
  • Clear indicators all round
  • Removed rear seats and sound deadening, put black vinyl to cover the rear area
  • Installed front fixedback bucket seats
  • Momo Prototipo steering wheel (my favourite wheel ever)
  • Redid the door cards in white vinyl, with a special touch
  • Removed rear speakers and all amps etc
  • Revshift Polyurethane 95a engine, gearbox and diff mounts
  • Aluminum steering coupler joint thing to replace the rubber flex disc, my friend custom made for me
  • Purple tag steering rack with brand new tie rods (What a difference!)
  • Rear muffler replaced with straight through twin pipe muffler
  • Carbon cold airbox (which I want to improve to feed more cold air)
  • AC deleted and all components from engine side removed
  • Couple more bits here and there

I went to Drag Wars round 1 on Friday and managed to pull a 14.52, my fasted time in it so far. Unfortunately no photos or videos. I will be at round 2 in a couple weeks with a few ideas on how I might be able to cut that time down.

Up next:

  • I've got a pair of 17x9 Style 32s I want to fit all round (with proper sized fat tyres), so I am going to be looking at making a set of arches to accommodate them. I am thinking similar style to how the M535i e28s had. None of this bolt on crap, but nicely done to look like it could have been a factory part. Will be color matched as well. I also want to raise the rear arch slightly, I never liked how much higher the back of these cars sit when the arches are equal relative to the tyres front and rear.
  • Coilovers to actually improve handling and set proper right height when arches are done
  • Custom make sideskirts because I never liked this twisty design, I want something closer to the AC Schnitzer ones.
  • Probably M50 manifold, because despite people saying not to, I still want to do it.
  • LSD diff would be nice as well as a ZF box (I think this gearbox is on it's way out, probably due to all my drag racing).
  • Couple other bits but they will remain a mystery for now

The main goal with this car for me is to get out and drive/race. I spent far too much time in the past working on my cars and not actually driving them, so now I want to focus on actually driving. I would like to complete in the Time Attack series when my circumstances allow, likelihood is this is the car I will use. Will see.

Decided to try something new, figured it might make it faster for Friday + a couple of updated photos of the interior.

Yeah looks awful given the rest the car looks clean.  Looks like some sort of projectiles have been hitting it.

Its probably easier to just find a replacement than to get it painted

Maybe they have, haha.

The guard was like that when I bought the car and I agree it looks terrible, it will be getting painted but I want to do the wheel arches first since I will have to cut them.

Managed to run a 14.48 on Friday. Not as fast as I was hoping for but still the fastest so far. As the night went on and the air got colder I started facing grip issues, which was surprising since I upgraded to better tyres for this round.

Got another drag day next month so will see if I can push for 14.3.

Also here's a video of the previous round where on my first run a Dodge Demon lost it, crossed my lane and narrowly missed me.

That top photo is awesome! The style 32's look bloody good at that width on an E36.

I agree, I couldn't ask for better fitment with the stock arches. I'm going to try achieve the same look with the 9s and the arches I'm going to make.

Did you see the demon crash behind you at the time?

Which seat mounts did you use?

Thanks but that's actually a bit sloppy. I've been out of practice for about a year. But lucky it was as fast as it was huh.

Yeah I did. What actually happened is I was thinking "He should be in front by now" so I decided to check, next thing I know I see red going across my interior mirror. Put me off a bit and I ran a 15 something time, haha.

NZKW as well. Just be aware if you want to do this and want to certify it, you will also need to get new web clamped seat belts with matching buckles, and mount the buckles to the tunnel using doubler plates.

You can get away with stock belts and E30 buckles mounted to the tunnel FWIW.

I thought so too but both certifiers I spoke to said no.
