Blue Chunder: E46 318Ci / VQ37VHR Swap + Other Stuff

Bit of an interesting one today ... got the car onto a set of corner scales to see how it looks. This was with minimal gas in the tank, maybe 1/8th and no driver. With me sitting in there it was quite well balanced left to right at the front which is cool.

So its a 52/48 split front to rear ... full tank of gas (lets say +40kg) makes it 49.4% rear give or take.

Would be really interesting to see some numbers from a 330 and M3 in RHD to compare !!

Pretty good. I thinking about doing mine last week but would have to ring around here to find out who can do it.

Did you do it via a wheel alignment type business?

Nope, this was at Race Lab where I got all my AN fittings and hose from ... would be surprised if many alignment places have the gear ? Would be more race car setup / suspension places like Autolign. I have a friend in the race car business in Hamiltron who might know. Will see if I have his number and flick him a message 👍

Id assume a shop that does racecar alignments would have one, sort of what i was thinking when typing that.

Yeah that would be good if he could do a reading.

No certification re-check tomorrow unfortunately due to the certifier getting Covid and pushing everything back a week. That has been a blessing in disguise as I've had time to not rush things.

I never mentioned that after flashing the standard Uprev ROM to the ECU I was unable to get past 70 km/h ... I thought that was very strange as my code to send the speed to the ECU was not functional (did not show speed in my OBD dongle). Upon investigation today it turned out it was in fact working !! Just calculating incorrectly. So have corrected that and now have an accurate speed signal to the ECU which is great as some of the tables reference speed.

Did a little data logging from the Arduino and from Uprev just to ensure they lined up when actually driving and have had great success.

Checked the 80-120 acceleration measurement is working, the display is just hanging out in the glovebox for now. Will look to right align the metrics and change colour based on value or something later I think ... loads of tinkering one can do in that space !!

This is a great run - go earlyish on a Sunday (7-730) and should barely see a soul:

Basically Bombay to Huntly via Highway 22 backroads, then turn around and come back the way you came.

Awesome @Eagle I'd be super keen to hear ... i was super close to getting one in their Black Friday sales recently !!

Thanks for the route @Sammo, once we get past the Christmas and new year period and I can hopefully / finally relax a little I'd love to take a spin (with tool box in boot) :) Been thinking I should catch up with you as the resident super beautiful interior consultant to set some direction also hah ... reminded every time i look over at my sagging window trim and rear panel fabric flapping around since an old workmate jumped in the back the other week.

I'm waiting for some kind of meet up ... hopefully on a cloudy day as the no aircon life is tough :D

Been working on the tuning lately, lots of learning and some doing ... got out for a good run tonight to Silverdale and around. First time finding the rev limiter at 7650 uphill on an onramp in 2nd for data logging. Looks like I'm out of injectors which is surprising !! Although it was running quite rich hmm. First real run into open loop territory.

Did some 0-50's also which were a lot of fun with no modern traction control etc

Here are my results from Draggy. Mostly did a few runs of each and was pretty consistent.  21 degrees outside, half tank of 95, spare wheel and my launching skills are average\scared of breaking the clutch.

0-60 - 2.85.

0-100 (1st>2nd) - 6.5s.

80-120s - 4.47s (2nd>3rd gear) 5.09s (3rd gear)

100-200 (5th gear just under 3k) 19.63s.

1\4 mile - 14.8s

Seems in spec from what ive seen online given all the variables at play and older engine.

Still jealous of the Draggy !! I'll have to change my code for  0-60 for comparison, but then i might need to pop a gear change in there hah

I quite enjoyed trying to launch it, few tyre roasting experiences 🚭

Just realised i never did a 80-120 using 2nd gear to start !! Classic, will have to give it a go.

Haha yeah no doubt you need a some traction aids. I dont trust the self adjusting clutch so im a bit paranoid launching it hard or excessively, i forgot to turn TC fully off on my first run and smelt it, but still did a 6.6s surprisingly. Once i redo the subframe and install the E36 M3 clutch setup i may do another launch set and call it a day.

I'm branching off into another time consuming side hustle to get a fancy screen replacing my 5x gauges ... started a separate thread to cover that one which can be found here:

Ahhhh yes another side hustle project is gathering steam ... looking to do a sunroof delete consisting of a carbon roof 😬

Something else that's been on the list to get sorted ... steering wheel with controls on it for a future head unit (really want the Blaupunkt Frankfurt) and the cruise buttons for my ECU map changing (will need some K line to resistance ladder magic I think !?).

So I got a wheel from Ebay and to add a little spice I got a Mewant genuine leather cover for it also. I think this will be the very first cosmetic thing done to the car !! 🤪 Keeping it pretty simple, perforated and solid leather with a grey centre marker.

Pretty happy with the steering wheel overall, great product I have to say !! Only issues were my own making ... the top section is 2 stitches out of alignment front to back 😫 Where I started on the left came out mint however never checked the alignment until I got to the centre mark, which is now on the piss haha.
