Anudda 130i - Saving the Silver Lemon.

Recommended Posts

2007 130i

Boston Lemon leather, fine wood light walnut, comfort lights and Msport. BMWP 313 wheels, Arqray exhaust and the rocking horse sh*t BMWP intake.

Cool spec cool bits on it, the interiors pretty pimp (and the intake and exhaust sound the part). Has literally all the minor issues, poor things just been neglected for awhile. Will be a bit of a project to unf**k and fix it all, then will sell it on as I really cant justify 3/4 cars.

First step will be one epic interior and exterior clean, and see if there are any other goodies hiding.

Does the intake actually sound any different? The airbox looks unchanged from the standard one?

Yup it does, the upper lid is very different to stock (and the carbon snorkel obviously)

Haha I have actually sold 2 of my 3.
I just have my OG LCI left.  Though I have plenty of other cars :s

Good thing is that Neglected E87's are not actually too bad to bring back to life.  My Black manual turned out to be an awesome car.

Day 1 of operation "Save the Silver Lemon."

Doesnt actually look toooo bad, has things growing on the top, all the fluids leaking out the bottom, but she has good bones!
Wheel bolts were all seized, had to breaker bar them.
Radiator is new, and someones put new bump stops on top of flogged out shocks.
Started pulling the stupid sub box out, which turned into pulling all the interior out to chase the BS wiring. Will combine with pulling all the interior out, has a few hundred mouldy dick monalds chips under the seats and it smells like a hookers handbag.

Day 2 of saving the Silver Lemon. Cleaning out the interior... I wore gloves.

Found the source of the stench, combination of mouldy chips and pie crumbs combined with a leaking jellybean scented pod airfreshener thing in the centre console, lovely cocktail, eau de rotting bean.

Subwoofer and wiring butchery removed, drivers door speaker still not working however, multimeter time.

Parts all ordered to fix the leaks and do all the servicing, debating on what to do with the exhaust.

  • Could put it on the other 130, it does sound good and looks kinda cool, but actually want a Laptorr for it as they sound properly legit.
  • Could sell the exhaust and go back to a stock one.
  • Could just leave it on there (will get autosol'd up so it looks shinier).

Same thing with wheels, could bang these ones back on, or swap them for the ACS Type IVs, which would look pretty legit silver on silver. Could even grab an ACS replica spoiler and ACS1 decals and make it an "ACS1" (Not that they really existed), 2000's eurotrash tuner it up with the oddball lemon yellow and walnut interior. Anyone interested in buying the exhaust (or BMW Performance 313s (they're genuine staggered set, made by BBS))

Baring in mind the idea is to sell it, not going to make heaps on selling it, but also dont want to lose coin haha. Thoughts?

Few hours on the Silver Lemon this arvo, its smelling less disgusting and the left side of the interior is no longer sticky.

Done about all I can with the seats, drivers seat just needs redying, everything else cleaning up OK. Lots of scrubbing, multiple rounds, then leather conditioner.

Wondering if I have a go at the headlining myself, anyone done this before? There is an interior place up the road that did my other 130 and its mint, but it also cost coin... and I can see myself losing money on this thing quickly!

Interior carpets cleaned, made some f**ken disgusting coffee.... the good news is its starting to smell less skanky. Waterblasted all the interior mats and they changed colour.

Got the headliner professionally redone, dirt cheap if I pulled it out and reinstalled it - Jimmy (aucklandautoupholstery at gmail.com) out at Ardmore is the absolute boss.

Drivers door speaker was blown, 0 ohms, so easy fix there. Starting to go back together at least on the inside.

Have all the parts to start doing the real work, short of set of B4 Bilstein's.

  • Sump gasket kit
  • Trans service kit
  • Rocker gasket kit
  • Engine mounts
  • Power steering line mounts
  • Headlight level sensor
  • Oilcooler gaskets
  • New plugs
  • All the filters as they are all nasty.

Also ordered an ACS replica spoiler and some ACS1 decals... will get some fresh tyres for the ACS Type IVs, because eurotrash :) Should be a nice 130 when done.

Still have no idea where coolant was pissing out from, decided the best way is to pull the whole front end off (bumpers all skewed anyway) and pull the cooling system apart and put it back together will make for better access to everything else anyway. The radiator and all the lines are new, so best guess is something just isn't together correctly or an O ring is missing or something dumb like that.

Nice work!

Might as well remove and clean the vanos solenoids and filters whilst you're in there.

Interior back together, skanky to swanky conversion complete inside.

Rear wiper is trashed, the usual issue, $40 on aliexpress for a new one ;)

Now the real sh*t starts, looking forward to sorting the headlights out will look way better when polished up.

Source of the coolant f**ken everywhere found, O ring cut in two when they reinstalled the transmission cooler to the new radiator... (midas, they do WINZ work...)

Oil leak source is pretty obvious : everything. A lot of degreasing and waterblasting to expose the engine underneath the cm of oil crud.

Power steering leak, still elusive, but will probably find it when subframe comes out.

Next job hack through the crud on the rocker cover, pull the manifold, then rocker cover gaskets etc.

Saving the Silver Lemon: Day whatever.

Intake removed, solid amount of oil in it so will take a look at CCV.

Rocker cover off, not the first monkey here as it was sealed on with rtv. Insides look pretty good, seen way worse anyway! Hydroformed exhaust cam (07 for reference)

Headbolt has snapped, but thankfully the internal ones still have heads, so no major to solve it.

Remains of the old micky mouse flange must have been floating around the engine bay, as found some of it under the car post wash #3.

Bunch of little BS jobs ticked off...

  • Headlights, it can see again with a bit of elbow grease and a DA.
  • Headbolt replaced
  • DISA valves checked, look mint. Vanos solenoids are fine. All the seals are on everything are brittle and cooked though, will replace everything as I go.
  • Vanos check valve filters cleaned, bit of carbon sh*t on one but nothing concerning.
  • CCV valve replaced, had a little split in diaphragm and was so full of sh*t I doubt it sealed at all. Loctite plastic epoxy thats good for 160 degrees used to reinstall it.

Midas WINZ work using cable ties is very impressive, tax dollars at work :D

Progress... sump gasket is totally cooked. The bump stop install is novel... will add some more to the growing parts list.

Now Im looking at the dirty old water pump and wondering "well, since Im here"... am never going to get money back on this thing hahahaha 😢

Todays Lemon Aid.

New water pump and thermostat, new engine mounts in, start putting the oil cooler/filter assembly back together. Had to break out the degreaser again with water pump off, the amount of oil sludge on bottom of ac compressor was amazeballs and I couldn't leave it.

As im an idiot I ordered manual bolts for the auto sump, so waiting on courier to put its underpants back on.

Figured out why there is power steering fluid everywhere as well, no o ring on the cap... that combined with the butchered o ring on the transmission cooler is what made all the mess (aside from the oil leaks that were ignored for years)

Another arvo on The Lemon (eventually it will need a new name!)

New tensioner, idler and serpentine belt. Along with a fresh set of plugs (the old ones looked fine, which is lucky!). Engine starting to get nicer to work on now that its no longer caked in 1cm of oil scunge.

Started stripping the front struts, the shocks are original (18 years and 200,000km+). They are completely toasted and have been for a long time, top hats are absolutely shagged as well. The bump stop install still has me in awe, 3 cable ties is the secret if you want to replicate Tony's tyres in Takanini.

Subframe degreased and looking much better.

Sunday afternoons lemonade stand.

Rear shocks out, the hilarity of the shonky workmanship is next level. Cut the strut cover, cut the bump stop, slap it together and then clock it so you cant see the BS

Exhaust out, all the hardware is pretty toasted, one of the clamps has claimed my 10mm socket. Decided to see how well it'll shine up with some autosol, the answer is really well, after all its not really an exhaust if you cant use it as a mirror.

How to pass a WOF as cheap as possible. The real question is did the customer have any influence on the decision, may of been some collaboration going on given the rest of the car condition.

Apparently the bill to WINZ (I assume with this one) was $1500 to fix it up for the last WOF. I guess WINZ aren't going to come after them for sh*t work, so they just DGAF? Need to actually have a look who did the WOF, might have been same shop.

Blows my mind, this thing would have been nearly a $100,000 car new, gets imported to NZ as presumably a nice car still, then ends up funded by the tax payer before nearly ending up in a wreckers yard. Winz needs a fleet of toyota vitz.
