Quick Questions

Do M50 Oil level senders f**k themselves often? I'm not sure if mine leaks, or just the o-ring leaks. I think the sender itself is poked.

Just a few quick question been thinking about maybe converting my auto E36 M43 to a 5speed Manual. The thing is does it matter what 5speed gearbox i use like long as it was fitted to the same model E36 and engine? or?The other thing is i was going to convert the engine a bit further down the track to a 6 cylinder would the gearbox adapt to the 6 cylinder engine. Also any recommendations in better options such as what gearbox/clutch etc to use would be really appreciated.

Thanks Jaz

I had a 4 cylinder box put into my old 6 cylinder E36. Came from a 318iS, only difference was the shift linkages in the 4 cylinders are a different length to the 6's.

If youre converting to manual i believe the M43 still uses a twin mass flywheel? If so, look into converting to single mass. I think the M20 flywheels still fit them. More reliable, cheaper and more options for clutches.

yep your right, the M20 flywheel does fit, but then that adds the complication of potentially having to run an M20 starter and maybe clutch and throwout bearing etc. youd be best to stick to E36 parts just to be sure

correct throwout differs,

some flywheels need to be skimmed to fit, otherwise they touch the engine

starter should be a facelift, as it is narrower

QQ, are E34 and E30 outer headlights (smileys) the same part? obviously bracket is different, but the one on my e30 flops about like a cock in a sock, would probably fail its warrent when it goes for it. I only have E34 spares in the shed, dont want to pull it apart to find out they are different if they are!

cheers

Climate air heater tap solenoids on top of the auxillary water pump.

Thanks, should the be noisy when key in position 2?

Not overly noisy but, you can hear them working, even when ac turned off.

The solenoids shouldn't make a noise the pump motor should make a slight noise without the motor running. You sure it's from that ? The pump needs to be running when you fill and bleed the cooling system on these otherwise you get an airlock in the heater matrix.

Yeah it is probably the pump underneath, its possible its the original one and is just a bit worn out.

I have no heating issues at all, just wondered what the noise was as it starts up before i start the car.

whats the best way to go about an oil change for a e36 323ci 1997 (m52)?

i got quoted $140 for full oil and filter using a brand called sinopec.

otherwise castrol 10w30 was $110 for just oil >_<

from the bit of search i did supposed to use 5w40?

and the car takes about 7L of oil? so if i was to DIY, i need to get 2x 5L bottles..

also where to dispose old oil if i decide to diy oil change?

thanks

Hi Guys,

Is an E30 powersteering rack rebuildable? Mine is leaking.

Is this a possible diy job or is it best left to specialists.

Can do it for you... but not for $140... the correct oil costs more than that and a genuine filter is $20 + Gst

Boy... there's a can of worms!

The extended interval type oils are VERY expensive - The castrol I use retails at $100 for 5L at repco... I get trade though through a mate

To the original poster, a decent service isn't required very often, so if you aren't comfortable doing it, get someone like Glenn to do it - he's VERY familiar with BMWs.

If you want advice on what oil to use - everyone has a different opinion. Mine is right though :P

I got it at Ripco, because my usual doesn't have the right oil ;)

I used to be a Wurth rep, so have a LOT of contacts, mostly up this way though. I also managed my brother in laws rental car fleet (120 vehicles) Plus I've been in the VW scene for years (aircooled and transporters). My other brother-in-laws are a Wurth rep still, and the other owns a diesel and turbo repair shop. One neighbour works from home as a engine reconditioner (and aircooled VW specialist - he's a long time mate from before I moved next door!) and the other has a large marine business and slipway. BOTH of them have hoists at home! I'm in a perfect spot for my hobbies!

Annoyingly, I could have got us facelift Hella Xenon lights (ballasts, self levelling and EVERYTHING - a full retrofit kit! Brand new) for only $100 more than we paid for halogens, BUT would have to ship them from the UK which would have been a couple of hundred probably. Plus customs charge GST etc on the way in. The REALLY annoying part, is that I have a pile of VW parts coming over in a van belonging to a mate of a mate, and could have got them in there  Grrr!

Anyway - Sorry! Tangent over

Hey guys quick question can you fit facelift kidney grills to a non facelift nose on a E36?Thanks

No, you need to buy a facelift nosepanel to fit them.

The panel is around $250-$300 new from a BMW dealer.
