I asked for information about chips or remaps, their availability and recommendations, to make best out of my car and regain some lost torque ( if possible) if I do a m50 manifold. I didnt come here to debate on numbers, manuals, automatics, elementary physics and crayons. What were you expecting me to deliver, a pair of balls? at least I can afford to buy another one if I ditch it and pay the repair bills too out of my own pocket! so up yours karl and your 525i land boat. It is! he's just lying. ....he probably had a bad day so hes here to push his weight and take it out on me. but I gotta run.. @westy can we close this topic please, think its run its course and now going to turn into a useless troll fest. I found my answer, I am not gonna chip or remap anything unless I go manual. I will try the m50 manifold mod just to try out the myth.

Some people arent born with bmw knowledge. And im sure you can have great mechanical and electrical knowledge and not already know the ins and outs of bmws. I sure didnt when i started. As you say he is asking questions and isnt that how we all learn. He might not have known how bmw code systems and cam sensors work at the start of this thread but im sure he will know by the end. Amberleigh is the same. Read her threads and the knowledge grows with every page. And now she is sharing what she has learnt. Snarky comments dont help people especially when they then feel.unwelcome to come on here next time, imo. And aside from not towing the car a couple of hundred kms to auckland to pay someone big money to fix it id say he has done everything pretty well with whats available.

Not meaning to be snarky at all. As I said - I am happy to help people. I don't profess to know it all either. I am still learning every day, as I bet Glenn is too. My comments are in response to seeing his current knowledge & the pitfalls that can lie ahead for him - & replacing parts for the hell of it. The fact that several questions are so off base confirms this & makes me somewhat judgemental. It could be quite quickly & economically diagnosed/ sorted by someone with the tools & know how. I see that Amber-Leigh gained knowledge from Ray @ HellBM while working on her car - slightly different learning situation to trying to fix it blind on the front lawn. Good on her Yes BMW's can have specific faults, but engine systems are generic across all marques. As for recovering to Auckland - as I understand, there is a good non dealer BMW tech in Whangarei, along with I expect - several Auto Sparkies. If there was one specific answer that I knew to be able to fix this car - I would be happy to offer advice. In this case though, there are many possibilities/variables that need to be eliminated.

Got a new coil to replace the one I took out the M3 to make the e46 run right again. Turns out it was f**ked too so will try again tomorrow, sigh

No, they just like to dick swing with inflated numbers. All of this is and no manual is a waste of time anyway.

I have decided after a bit of a chat with a few other enthusiasts, that I should create a nice thread regarding my E39 'Project' as such. It will be very basic, and follow the work that has/will be done on her, but I am no expert in any sense, so don't expect an amazing read - I will leave that up to the professionals So Monday 17th of Feb, a day after selling my much loved E38 728i, I upgraded to a 1997 540i (M62B44) She currently has 170,000 k's sitting on the clock, but is very tidy and clean, and completely stock. I took her for a test drive, but the impulsive joy of driving a V8 Bmw with one of my many favourite motors, saw me buy it right there and then without doing the ideal thing, and getting it scanned. Sadly, after 100ks of driving and eventually rocking on home from her purchase, she stalled dead in my drive-way without the ability to restart, so she became the very new project sitting on my front lawn. And so the list begins! All My work is done with Ray & His Team at HellBm. Work Completed: - Camshaft Position Sensor replaced (18/02) - Fuel Pump Replacement (18/02) - Ignition Switch replacement (28/02) Fine and well until grunty sounds from the transmission area appeared so: - Torque Converter Reconditioned (10/03) - Transmission Service (2 & 2 come together lol) - Left Wheel Speed Sensor replacement She has finally come right, but as the usual, you can never not have anything to do on a BMW, so the 'to do' list follows To Do: - Exhaust system sort out - 02 Sensors, - Coolant Flush - Oil change/Service - Coby Performance Muffler (or whatever you want to call it, fart can etc) to replace stock Mufflers - Angel Eye Installment - Sort out Rims, Plasti Dip current until new rims catch my eye - Potentially Motorsport front & rear bumper (or just buy a MSport ) - Windows tinted to 35% - Interior trim to be changed from the old 'wood' look to Ali look. This is a long term goal list and I am sure there will be issues pop up to be added as with any thing automotive, but I am loving the challenge and the reward of having a better car than when I started. And to add to the weekly care regime, she gets 6 hours spent on cleaning her every week

I have learnt an abundance of knowledge about not just my car, but many others, (majority has been from working with Ray on my car to be fair) but also a nice portion from reading the many challenges we all face with our much loved Bmw's. I came in with the idea I 'thought' I knew a lot, when In fact, I knew nothing! And come on, what German car is ever easy to figure out when you aren't a professional spending hours each day tinkering and tweaking! No harm in asking too many questions, I know I would rather be safe than sorry, but Hotwire also didn't mean in it an offensive manner, we are here for the sharing and broad spectrum knowledge each of us can bring, so don't hammer a member to hard for wanting to learn more, or to those who meant it in a pleasant way either Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I live Rural - gravel drive, so either 2 washes a week or a wash and interior clean and condition.. It is my baby! I think age to be fair, and also a very blind history with that car. A lot of TLC and time to be put into her Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ray from Hellbm spent a lot of time reading into the car, and the correlations and affects certain parts have etc, plus, I have had a Fuel Pump from the E38 test perfectly on the work bench, but not at all in the car (so was on the go ahead to replace anyway) It was idling rough, and we did one step at a time, so Cam Sensor, check, Fuel Pump, Check, and then the car ran like a dream, so just those two simple things from spending a bit of time reading into the connections and affects one part has on another, sorted the entire issue I do wish you luck! I remember how I felt when my 'new' car stalled the first night I bought her.. Guttering! But yes, sensors are the first place to go too, see how it runs from there, and keep us updated for sure.

Probably way to late to input anything helpful - but the situation, to an extent, sounded very familiar to what happened to my 540.. Stalled, Started then stalled a few more times, then dead. Waited the next morning and was able to start again and get it to the pros.. Cam Sensor + Fuel Pump and that sorted the issue. Not the same engine and so on, and way to late, but go for those two things I would suggest... Scanner should point you in the right direction to a solid solution.

If you want to get it sounding a bit nicer without spending much, you can cheat!! I drilled a 40mm hole in the back of the standard resonator, ( the one at the back with no outlet ) sounds quite nice without being obnoxious, and took about 10 minutes with a holesaw and battery drill!! Not sure if its because i grew up in Northland, but I'm happy with it:) Keep up the good work, its always nice to see someone improving a car instead of driving it into the ground!

Haha, there have been times I wanted to pull my hair out when reading the fault codes, but there has never been a negative side to it (yet) as the drive after a replacement or improvement gets me grinning from ear to ear - okay, technically the use of extra money on her could be classed as a negative What is up with yours? (if you don't mind me asking!)

Yep, sadly 'sealed for life' means the life of typical BMW ownership from new (so 3 years until the warranty runs out) - after that should be serviced regularly!
  25. 1 point
They aren't sealed at all and quite serviceable, but hardly anyone does. It may be terminal if it's slipping and need rebuilding. I would check oil level first and not throw money at it till you can determine what is actually wrong. Contact your local Auto Trans specialist.
