I've noticed with auto-manual converted bmw's that the revs hang for nearly a second when you depress the clutch pedal (I.e doing 3k rpm, press clutch in to change gear, revs will hang at 3krpm for a bit before dropping as opposed to dropping immediately when clutch is depressed). A recommended fix is to drop a socket (not one you need!) into the Idle control valve to restrict the amount of airflow going through it. This thread: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1903183-Rev-hang-fix-workaround-finally! has a good explanation.

Manual conversion does NOT require certification when using factory parts.

To be clear I am not talking about the rear going sideways like an old 911. No it's more of an absence of understeer so that if you choose too you can provoke some oversteer, but the emphasis is on "provoke". Compared to how it was initially where the default setting was for the front to run wide unless you could get some trailling brake turn in ; it now just turns in and you can rely on the rear to stay planted unless you want to influence it with the right foot. But as its only got 170kw its most obvious in slower tighter corners, on long sweepers it just sticks and I haven't wanted to test when it will break away at 100 kph plus on a public road. FWIW my drive home is 44 corners on a twisty 8km mountain road with not much traffic and most of those corners are taken between 40 and 80 kph. I drive this road 2 to 4 times a day and you can get a pretty good idea about a car's ability with a few runs over the hill.

I did it on our E39 - it IS worth it. It's a stupid, stupid thing!

unless the law has recently changed (in which case all manual swaps already completed it won't effect) then there is no need for a certification providing it uses all genuine BMW parts in an un modified way, and using the gearbox that would ordinarily be fitted to that engine e.g. a getrag box on an e36 328i would need cert as its not the correct ZF box. however, there also the benefit of being such a multitude of cars on our road a WOF inspector or worst case a serious crash unit investigator is likely to never notice as well

yes bolts up no problem at all. make sure you research compatibility between gearbox flywheel/clutch setup and the starter motor

Have you checked the sender, mine did this and it turned out to be a damaged float on the level sender, it was soaking up fuel and sinking!

Could try looking at the fuel sending unit? Fuel level sensor?....i don't know for sure as i don't own a 5 series, but will suggest some ideas.

What this version is missing that the old had - chemistry. Chemistry was the magic of Top Gear. Sadly no more. Clarkson, Hammond and May have got it. Matt, Sabine and that shouty guy don't. And never will. Period. Even Extra Gear doesn't. IMHO. Who is willing to admit that the reason they kept watching season after season the 'previous' version was not what cars they were reviewing, but what the 'boys' were going to get up to? I do . That's the magic of chemistry... that was the magic of Top Gear. My car show of choice is now Wheeler Dealers. Why? Cos Mike and Edd have chemistry

I was under the impression if you recoded the ECU as for a manual it would fix the problem. Never bothered trying it though.

Update on my RE003's. After 5000km, I am still very happy especially with the grip in the wet. I managed to ride in an E36 a few weeks ago with RE002's and it confirmed to me that the 003 is a much better tyre, much better dry grip, better wet grip and better feel. Sidewall stiffness on the 003 seem pretty good as under hard cornering there is very little squirm just a linear input from the wheel to the amount of turn in. Now I probably have to put some of that down to the chassis, Olaf's kind words about my 46 are appreciated but to be fair a bit of time and effort went into setting it up and it's good to know someone else also thought it felt right. With 245's all round now I have set the front end to be a bit softer than the rear and I am running the front anti roll bar on its softer setting. This has made it turn in very direct and if anything it can be a bit prone to oversteer if pushed to aggressively, that said I am sure E 30 owners would feel at home especially with ASC turned off.

More updates on my excursions! visited hampton downs to do some skid pan work. Trying to handle the car in a tight, slow environment was very... tiring. I don't have power steering and still running the e30 4 turn lock to lock rack. Also i'm finding that i run out of lock very quickly so will need to do something about that. Despite all this I had an awesome time! Learning to drive this car *properly* is so fun. I need to attend more of these types of events and get as much seat time as possible! My car was dubbed the cone eater of the day. my front lip had suffered quite a beating haha Hence its absence Having great friends that always come to cheer me on, I had to take them all for some rides. What better way to show off my new front end setup! The more I drive this car, the more I need to change stuff. Some new bits and bobs incoming

UPDATE 12/06/16 Car is back on the road! Wow over two mouths of it being off the road we got her done! Car feels great after doing a rough wheel alignment ourselves (As no one was open at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon) it was drive able. Feels like a new car! Is a lot harder ride and feels tighter in the steering but not a race car either. Feels more alive, takes bumps and corners amazingly well both at low and high speeds. I'm so happy with - it feels and drivers better than I could ever of imagine. IMO it was worth all the time and money it took! Can't wait for new tyres a proper alignment and reinforcement plates to go in and really see what she can do. Some pics of her back on the road.
